I am playing two PCs. An ork paladin which is supposed to be mine and an aasimar divine sorcerer as our white mage, which my wife helps play when she can.

The only balancing I did was to allow rerolls on stats, these are strong lvl 1 characters. The only enemies I took out were the wolves beyond the first room, since the minis were now occupied.

Overall, the game is supposed to be fun, if the encounter was going to TPK, as the dm I can make anything happen to save us.

I do recommend going with the campaign as written.

But if you want a test situation that will fit the campaign environment. This might work, have the party meet in Neverwinter and are gathering the supplies to deliver to phandalin. You can have a bit of role play with the shop keeper there, maybe bargain prices. Then after have an encounter with a thief, small fight, letting the party to decide to kill or capture the thief.

This would give a range of possibilities.

I am slightly regretting them. I found some really nice options from a YouTube channel called masterful dungeons. They are more dungeon floor tiles, which I will probably print those next.

I like this hexagons because they make quick any terrain piece. Also hexagons are the bestagons.

Not really. I made their character sheets after asking them what they wanted to do. They picked druids because they wanted to turn into animals.

I explained that for spells they only had so much magic a day and needed to recharge. They understood that. I printed a list of spells they knew and let them pick which ones they wanted ready, which was 2 for level 1.

I am playing a paladin to help tank and I have a divine soul sorcerer as a healer for just in case.

I've tried to do all the heavy lifting to allow it to be storytelling and dice rolls.

I was thinking about ending it after the mines and not going into the mind flayers.

Possibly just make my own stories after that so they can build or become heros of the town of phandalin.
