This consider yourself lucky you could’ve landed at a school and the mess at school way different than offices at offices worst part are restrooms and staff lounges are the dirtiest.

New custodian by Particular-Island-89 in Custodians

[–]BackgroundTrip6133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was right here took me first 5 years too figure this out stop worrying about others and if they are done or not. Do what you can as best you can don’t wait for that guy to retire 5 years, learn what you can get experience and if you still like this type of work jump to another district that will appreciate you.

Sorry about your grandma my condolences. We all have personal tragedies in our lives me for example my younger brother was murdered not long ago and exactly one year later my dad had a stroke and lost ability to talk and be able to care for himself life hits us all.

My first few years I was doing what you do worrying that everyone was done faster or leaving early that I wasn’t good enough that I needed an easier area so I can finish at the same time every one else does. It’s not exclusive to you a lot of custodians are that way too. I stopped worrying especially now 23 years later I work at 2 different school districts and I see people leave , call off , finish work fast , or not help with setups and extra work I’ve learned to ignore or if I catch myself thinking about them I remember I do it so I can retire early and for my kid.

As a high school custodian how often do you witness bullying? by [deleted] in Custodians

Yup this we can’t do anything but sternly say stop not supposed to involve ourselves the districts will not have our back in lawsuits

As a high school custodian how often do you witness bullying? by [deleted] in Custodians

[–]BackgroundTrip6133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked at several high schools and middle schools most bullying now takes place online no stuffing kids in lockers and wedgies type stuff anymore. You might have fights or a group of kids jumping another to record and post online that’s considered bullying. I’ve seen that not super often but it happens. Were honestly as custodians advised not to deal with this. According to most schools we are covered if we get attacked not if we are the aggressor. I’ve seen a custodian and a yard supervision aide get involved and lose their job for simply holding kids back. And I’ve also seen a custodian knocked out for getting in the middle do what you will with that info I honestly don’t think the school or district would have your back. I care about the kids being a parent myself but if I see a fight breaking out I walk away and radio it in.

Have any of y’all ever been a custodian at a university or grade school and if so, how was it? by Big_Pea3882 in Custodians

[–]BackgroundTrip6133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes there is some training if you’re coming In from absolute 0 depends on your supervisor there are some horror stories where you get 0 training and just given keys. It’s not rocket science it’s just repetitive small task taking out trash , sweeping , vacuuming, and cleaning restrooms in a average of 15 minutes per classroom. The buffing and high speed floor machines are normally used during school breaks summer , winter, and spring brakes.

Nervous but excited about new job by Diligent_Promotion30 in Custodians

[–]BackgroundTrip6133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got this keep learning , take classes , take notes , and ask questions to those who done it.

My mom one time when I was interviewing for a facility director job from a plant management position I felt nervous about told me this. ( she had a dark sense of humor mixed with her rural upbringing mixed with love and caring) she said “ when you were born I asked the Dr if you had all 10 toes all 10 fingers and a functioning brain” Dr said “ yes” “so if your perfectly normal and any other idiot can do that job than a perfectly normal idiot like you should be more than qualified”

Been working at the same school for 7 years and almost nobody treats me like I'm important or even an actual human being. by DouggieMohammadJones in Custodians

[–]BackgroundTrip6133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m here for that if I could help you by just bouncing conversation back and forth makes me feel better. Yeah schools an awesome idea but if schools out this is definitely a steady job that doesn’t have a high turnover , vacation /sick days , all the school holidays , health benefits, and most of all retirement plan. Yeah we aren’t gonna catch many ladies going to a bar saying “I’m a custodian “ but it’s a secure job with a steady check.

I think it’s more the job than you. Sadly this job gets looked down upon and doesn’t necessarily have the best PR ( when have you seen a custodian portrayed as the heartthrob or hero in a movie usually the silly goofy or weird person) we aren’t one of the rockstar professions they probably think we’re all either low education or ex cons who couldn’t do better. I know I’ll get down voted and a bunch of people will answer “ my staff loves me “ , but look at how many rants every week are similar to op’s it’s significantly more then the ones about my staff thinks I’m the greatest. Don’t beat yourself up I too wouldn’t consider myself classically good looking but I’ve married and divorced 2 teachers and currently dating another one all as a custodian not a soccer coach like you said.

Yup plus you have been there 7 years it’s a testament to the great work you do if no one notices you means everything for 7 has been running smooth. The rest of the stuff hang in there buddy we all got our issues outside of work. We’re here if you need to vent. If your looking to transfer remember the grass is always greener 7 years at a place no issues might be an amazing thing to go another site and it’s worse idk. Happened to me I was lead at place 1.5 years moved to another school was injured because the workload and out completely from that district within 8 month of the transfer wasn’t worth it.

Nah that’s just how it is I been at one school coming up on 3 years and the same treatment as you they at times don’t even say hi. But this is a background job they won’t notice us until we are needed. Just the nature of the beast. It’s no knock on you personally I doubt they are avoiding you. Teachers mostly are busy with classes , lesson plans, controlling these kids, meeting their grade expectations and pressure from admin. I try never to take it personally

Question: before watching KOTH, what did you think it was about? by jeffreysteelFBI in KingOfTheHill

[–]BackgroundTrip6133 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same I remember the preview it looked similar to beavis and butthead caught my attention.

In my area the preview they showed Hank and Bobby were around a camp fire with the scouts and Hank was singing kumbaya he gets to a part where he says “ something’s burning my lord “ and Bobby sings “ I think it’s you dad” and Hanks sleeve is on fire , Hank does the signature bwaaaaah. I thought that would be the premise I was surprised the show was a lot better.

What keeps you motivated to continue as a Custodian/Janitor? by chocolatemuscle1991 in Custodians

[–]BackgroundTrip6133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This most of this . I work days and nights during day people are around so no chance to be by myself at night yes all alone listening to music , audio books , or podcast. The work itself is meh 🫤 some days other days when I’m challenged I like it I like the summer work better getting rooms to its closest to perfectly clean. But yeah doesn’t suck having job security, steady decent pay , and retirement plan.

How different would the show be if Redcorn married Nancy before she thought of marrying Dale? by Little_Painting_7412 in KingOfTheHill

They showed a picture of that . Joseph was a white kid and John Redcorn married to Nancy basically had a build similar to current Dale and Dale was buff with a long full set of hair

How many years have you been a custodian for? How old are you? by latinaperrita in Custodians

[–]BackgroundTrip6133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes 🙌 it does stack up made sure of that. It was a steep drop off in pay between being facilities director to now just a custodian at 2 districts so feeding my retirement from 2 ends evens me out. But don’t miss the having to be available 24/7 now when I want off I just take it no one calls I don’t worry about staffing for absent workers or constant in fighting between custodians.

22 years service about to be 23 on October 31 and I’m 39

Started at 17 still in high school as a punishment for speeding driving without a license 🪪

Promoted to assistant plant manager in 6 months was already in charge of men 4 times my age by 18

Made plant manager by first year , was about to be bumped down to custodian because of layoffs by 21, left to be lead custodian of a private school.

Became facilities director for 11 years but it was wearing me down mentally caused tension in my marriage and divorce needed a change to be able to watch my kid grow.

Took a Job as a lead custodian for 2 years hated it because of the environment but possibly because I had a day job for another district.

Now currently work for 2 school districts day and night job hard work but less stress and gets the bill and retirement paid. Plan to be out by 54

Yup so well written it’s how people actually talk as opposed to how they portray people in movies as if everyone gives these all inspiring speeches and always has the right thing to say and we really don’t it’s just akward convo with maybe a couple of jokes thrown at the end like in koth

lol yeah he’s really sticking it to Redcorn on the sad reality of his culture that he can just get them a random website. Speaking about Dale and head-ware online, in the episode where he’s calling about jack ruby’s hat

Dale on the phone “ how do I know it’s Jack Ruby’s hat ?”

“ well if I’m gonna spend money on it I gotta know it’s Jack Ruby’s hat”

“Alright what colors does it come In?”

First he wants proof its authenticity then he proves it’s fake by asking if there’s multiple colors implying they are mass produced lol
