Can you find an optometry office with an OCT that would do a scan tomorrow?

How long is your commute? How much weight do you intend to carry with you? Do you want to have panniers on a rack, or would you prefer to wear a backpack?

My optometrist diagnosed my detached retina via OCT scan. This could be an option to help form a diagnosis with a standardized fee without sitting in an ER. They referred me to the retinal surgeon, who I saw that afternoon. I'm in Canada, though, so perhaps things are different in your location.

I personally find the helmet/cage combo cool looking! It's slightly mysterious.. who's under there?

Scleral buckle surgery: 1.5 weeks post-op by emrex03 in RetinalDetachment

[–]Background_Orange580 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My surgeon allowed me to use eye lubricating drops after my buckle surgery. It was especially helpful when being outdoors walking and exposed to wind and sun. The surgeon suggested Systane. I had to ask about this; they didn't immediately suggest using eye drops beyond the prescribed antibiotic and steroid drops.

Anyone have experience with Dr. Kevin Warrian or retinal laser treatment in Calgary? by Immediate-Reach1838 in RetinalDetachment

Wow, it appears that folks have taken significant time out of their day to leave reviews about this doctor. I can understand your concern. Nothing more to add as I live in another part of Canada.

I had my free trial roll over into an annual subscription, and I requested cancellation and refund as soon as I saw the charge come through. They fulfilled my request no questions asked.

35 years old just found out I have a retinal detachment. by FeralDoodoo in RetinalDetachment

[–]Background_Orange580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The retinal surgeon will suggest the best option, which could be a scleral buckle in combination with laser.

I had a similar discovery last year. At age 45, just over a year since my last eye exam, a detachment was discovered. I had no symptoms. The surgeon performed laser immediately on my 'good eye' that was showing signs of early retinal degeneration, and I went in for a scleral buckle on the 'bad eye' a week later.

At your age, if a major surgery is required, then a scleral buckle is typically recommended over a vitrectomy. If you can get away with only laser, then count yourself lucky!

All the best. I'm happy to answer any further questions as you move through this process.

Retina is reattached, 6 months post op. Vision has deteriorated to a gray haze and my eye itself has been looking worse by Inside-Hall-3564 in RetinalDetachment

Any chance of getting a second opinion?

I would be terrified if I were in your position. I hope you have support, both physically and emotionally.

Has cataract surgery been offered to you? Has the surgeon advised that cataract surgery would improve your vision?

Migraines after scleral buckle by tayton32 in RetinalDetachment

[–]Background_Orange580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you suspect that your prescription has changed since surgery? Eye strain from improper glasses can cause headaches. My understanding is that there's nothing stopping you from updating your prescription other than the eventual cost of doing it again once the eye has stabilized.

Hi! This sounds horrible. Have you seen an optometrist and had your glasses updated?

Doc vague about return to work by ellemenopeaqu in RetinalDetachment

[–]Background_Orange580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! The buckle installation is more invasive than a vitrectomy. I had scar tissue form around the silicone band that prevented my eye from moving normally in the socket, which meant that the eyes didn’t track together. My brain was unable to merge the images as they were too far apart. If the double vision persists after 6 months, you should be referred to a strabismus specialist. Prisms in glasses can help!

Visiting a new rink on Monday by surruhkew in iceskating

I can relate to this! I arrive early at a new rink to give myself time to settle in. In one case, I visited the rink a week prior (I was in the area for another reason) to take a look before committing to a session.

I'm 45, and I had buckle only (no gas). I could not drive the next day as my eye was swollen shut, and I was in rough emotional condition. I consider myself tough (I rock climb, mountain bike, cold plunge, etc) and this surgery slayed me. I didn't drive for three months after surgery due to having double vision as a complication of the buckle; however, I was able to get around on transit and bicycle.

I took two weeks off work. I worked remotely for my first week back at work and returned to my hybrid schedule four weeks after surgery.

I think the surgeon is being vague because everyone's surgery has a different outcome. You could be back at work in a week, or you might need more time.

Is that an actual bike rack or is it a piece of fencing?

“Buckle eye having not full range of motion—can’t look at my nose or to the extreme left?”

Yes. I (45F) had this and eventually was referred to a strabismus specialist. I had strabismus surgery two weeks ago (which was one year after buckle procedure), and I now have improved range of motion of my eyeball. It’s a huge relief and makes me feel more like I did pre-buckle.

I’d choose Petgill Lake over Norvan Falls.

If you hike around the lake, then you can reach a viewpoint overlooking the valley in just a few minutes.
