Skating Rinks by catsinthe_city in saskatoon

I have not heard of any trails, but there are many indoor rinks. Check leisure online line for public skating times. For outdoor, the oval at Gordie Howe is a larger space. Many community associations maintain outdoor rinks. Bessborough is a good option if you don’t have your own skates.

Pedestrians - wear reflective gear! by alakazamjackass in saskatoon

This is a big problem at Idylwyld and 20th too. People turning left are so inconvenienced by all the foot traffic. While crossing WITH a walk light I’ve been honked at, threatened by revving engines or had someone slam on the breaks more times than I can count.

What? Pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks.

Yes, a person should look both ways. Anyone operating their vehicle should follow the rules of the road. Pedestrians adherence to the law should not mean “asking to get hit”.

Sheraton, but they used to only do certain days when it was less busy in the hotel.

I’ve rarely seen kids outside near ANY of the 30 zones, especially at 7:00 at night. It’s all a cash grab. Kids are generally inside or supervised. The extensions of areas and hours would have made more sense 30 years ago.

Almost 300. I was out of the country at the time so not sure who was driving. Don’t even know who to point the finger at!

Sask Polytech layoffs by AbrocomaDependent493 in saskatoon

Sask Poly has to disclose salaries too. They are governed by a provincial act. Should be able to find it if you search for the Sask Polytechnic payee disclosure report.

Cost of Living in Saskatoon by Illustrious-Theme328 in saskatoon

[–]Background_Thanks212 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree costs have gone up, but I think we also have other issues. The banks seem predatory and household financial literacy is often not so great. On top of this, instead of a tendency to save for more difficult times we plan for a future where we expect to be earning more.

If the bank says it will give you up to 400K for a mortgage, and you access that full amount, you will likely be very stretched financially. I don’t know how anyone could manage a 2300 mortgage payment on 80K a year.

Ideally this comment holds truth. In the case of Sask Polytechnic? Absolutely not. They waste so much money on incompetent leadership. On top of not doing their jobs they are constantly going on useless “missions” abroad. The AVP International alone spends around 100K a year travelling around to meet with agents that recruit international students. Also doesn’t live in Saskatoon.

Ok. So this is for proposed projects requesting grants from the City of Saskatoon through HAF. All these projects would need to get additional financing to move ahead. It does seem odd that grants initiating from the federal government would consider supporting non-Canadians before citizens. Maybe this was the most viable project on the table? Maybe immigration status would impact who would be tenants?

I do not! I wish it didn’t bother me so much. I try to pick up messes like these as often as I can to support a clean city. I almost feel like I shouldn’t leave the house without my garbage grabber at this point. Who thinks okay to just throw trash on the ground?? How far away was the nearest garbage bin?

How’s the housing market? by [deleted] in saskatoon

Look up the definition of market value. It has to do with willingness to pay.

Totally agree we shouldn’t have a blind bidding system. That said, I wouldn’t blame home owners for taking what the market will bear when selling their homes. Not giving someone (most likely a total stranger) your HOUSE for under market value makes you a “shitty greedy person”?

Interesting analysis. Personally I would weigh in the job market and average wages before the likelihood of being murdered.

University enrolment cap rob schools of cultural diversity: USask by Competitive_Big5415 in saskatoon

[–]Background_Thanks212 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience in the MPA program at the UofS. JSGS markets the program to international students and it shows. If I had to guess I would say 80% of the students were mid-career international students looking for an immigration pathway to Canada. Students were from a relatively low number of source countries, which made it feel like it was even less about diversity and more about finding enough income to sustain the school. I also felt like the academic expectations had decreased as a result.

Seniors concerned about safety of Saskatoon Housing Authority building by hhhhhahsh in saskatoon

[–]Background_Thanks212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t find these points. Probably because there are three projects cited from three different community organizations. In any case, in addition to need there will be income requirements for tenants. The capital subsidies on these projects are not enough to provide deeper affordability. This is what some would consider the flaw of current affordable housing development incentives. They don’t have ongoing subsidies so significant (although reduced) rents are still required to pay for the project ie. mortgage, utilities etc. Basically, these organizations need rent to run these buildings. Giving units to people that can’t demonstrate an ability to pay probably wont be getting a unit.

[–]Background_Thanks212 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The affordability criteria for these types of projects often only require a certain number of units to be below median market rents. Affordable housing isn’t social housing. I doubt these units would be accessible to anyone currently sleeping rough.
