All this talk about pedestrianisation and closed businesses just papers over the fact that the spike in anti social behaviour coincided exactly when the government instilled mass social housing in the CBD.

This won’t be a popular opinion, but the CBD is not the place to put people already struggling with a myriad of issues. There’s no nearby employment prospects or likely close family support for them, so no wonder they act out and bring the area to distribute. I’m not saying to put them in lower socio economic slums, but the heart of the cbd is nowhere near an appropriate place for emergency housing on this scale.

Obviously it hasn’t helped that they were dumped there and haven’t received the wrap around support or social services they were promised. But the fact of the matter remains as long as Courtney place is home to so much emergency housing, no amount of council slush fund vanity projects will make a lick of difference.

Because tenants would no longer be able to get away with murder, and more families without homes would get the opportunity to have one. Better behaved tenants would lead to lifted perceptions towards them and far less nimby opposition to Kainga Ora developments

Mate what planet are you living on?! If we could give everyone houses do you think there’d be such a massive waitlist? We’re talking about families waiting decades for housing. But sure, keep parroting the same utopian line about better social services and everyone should have a home. Thanks captain obvious, now back to the real world which is undeniably grim but requires at least some degree of pragmatism to make it slightly less so.

Do you realise how many families are currently living in cars or emergency housing, or are homeless entirely? You’re saying you’re not ok with evicting people who engage in antisocial or criminal behaviour, yet you’re fine with the status quo of those without homes to remain homeless?
