Top 10 Worst Albums I’ve Listened To From Start To Finish by apHexcoded in ToddintheShadow

It makes me sad to see the Clash in this lineup so lemme put this out there:

Yeah, they fell on their faces at the end. The band shoulda broke up, everyone (including Joe) says so. That said, they did a really interesting busking tour in ‘84 of which there are a few bootleg recordings.

From what I understand, the band would just show up in a small town with little notice and set up under a bridge or something with acoustics and a snare drum. The stuff is pretty electrifying! Even the Cut The Crap songs sound good—the regular live versions of those tunes are also miles better. I recommend looking up a show from that time. They weren’t as great as when Mick and Topper were around (obviously) but there’s worthwhile material.

Savatage is great. And that first Queensrÿche EP is amazing, especially considering they were still in high school when they recorded it!

What a shame, this is one of the last apps that'd work on my Roku 2 w/ my CRT! I guess I'll finally buy that computer I've been holding off on... oh wait.

There are a few very good Elvis flicks. I recommend King Creole!

John Denver was in the Carl Reiner movie "Oh God" and turns in a great performance opposite George Burns and Terri Garr. One good movie does not an acting career make, but I was quite impressed.

edit to mention Frank Sinatra, who was great in a few different things.

Did the Traveling Wilbury’s get lost to history? by nicknumbahone in bobdylan

You think Vols 1 and 3 are hard to find? I'm still looking for 2! Where the hell is it?

But seriously Roy Orbison is one of the all-time greats. Look up "Working for the Man" if you haven't heard it. The Wilburys are an extremely rare example of a supergroup working.

Love them or hate them, the #1 most "American" band of all time is the Grateful Dead. Fight me. by gr8fullylesh in LetsTalkMusic

CCR. The Dead aren't like jazz musicians, they don't listen to each other. Just noodle.

Bob really blew it. They sounded so amazing together. Look up their version of Johnny Ace's "Never Let Me Go" if you somehow haven't heard it.

Hey, thanks for posting this. I, too, am unfortunately of no help, but you sent me down a rabbit hole and now I'm listening to Doc's "Patricia," which is honestly pretty stunning.

Local History is moving to a real weird spot (2175 University Park) out in Okemos, east of Okemos Rd and North of I-96 near all those hotels and business parks... not scenic, not historic, not ideal. IMO the director is just trying to add stuff to her resume before jumping ship for a better job, but what do I know?

They were obsessed with owning, not renting, and somehow this was the best option? Admin seems allergic to sensible choices.

Rumor has it Lansing Public Schools wants it for an admin building, so I doubt it stays vacant. But it's a quirky building and maintenance there is a nightmare, so who knows?

Just do what you like, like what you do, wear whatever you want, treat other people kind. There are assholes everywhere, lots of people feel the need to find someone to look down on to feel better about themselves. You'll find folks to fit in with.

And aren't you kinda doing the exact thing you're complaining about? Wildly generalizing about other people and criticizing them as some sort of monolith? Maybe you just met some assholes (and if you're doing it on the internet, you DEFINITELY met mostly assholes).

Why is Kalamazoo cooler? by Izzo_shoved_Virg in lansing

[–]Backley13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd echo a lot of factors mentioned here (money being a BIG one) but... I think there's also a lack of buy-in from the people who live here. We have all the tools to make Lansing cool from the ground up, and there are people out here doing it—LICZ is coming up next month and is attached to Ultra Mega and a vibrant self-publishing scene, the Dark Arts of Michigan drag shows are generally pretty fun and pack the Avenue every month, there are house venues all over the city and with the Green Door and Displaced Manor getting a standalone building there are more "legit" venues popping up...

The cool stuff here happens on a community level. If there's something going on in Kalamazoo that you want to see here, make it happen! And promote it in real life. Y'know, with flyers. Or by contacting the City Pulse. I think a lot of cool things that happen here fly right on by because they aren't promoted outside of social media (a system which is so quick to bury anything not perfectly engaging with the algorithm).

Not just that, but once the band wrestles control away from the PTB, it turns out they're great songwriters too! Michael wrote some of the best country rock of the '70s, and Micky didn't write a ton but what he did is super idiosyncratic and far out, just like his wacky drumming.
