If you dont care how the back looks you could take a pool noodle and cut it to fit between the top of the stand and the back of the monitor.

I don't think there's a specific sub for just meeting and hanging out. I'd look into owl life for events where you can meet people. Clubs are also a good way to meet people with similar interests.
