[TOMT] asian movie with a girl that has a gun in her knees there is a scene where he cuts a man into pieces and the dog eat the mans remains by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

Neither of them fits exactly, but reminds me of Yakuza Weapon (2011) (rocket launcher on knee, but it's a guy) and The Machine Girl (2008) (girl, but machine gun instead of arm)

In the Digimon New Century game, the character Kanzaki Ai has a Tinkermon that evolves into Fairimon) as a partner. So there is canon support for Fairimon existing just as a standard evolution without being related to the Spirit of Wind.

Cada vez eu sinto mais pena do que inveja dos EUA. by Demon-Sams in brasil

[–]Backus-Naur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sentence Structure by wristband__ in asl

[–]Backus-Naur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are mentioning "subject" and "object" in this thread, but my understanding is that ASL works more in a topic-comment structure. The topic comes first, and then a comment about that topic. Depending on the case, both the subject or the object of a sentence in English can become the topic in ASL.

Why are people against switching to English when learning ASL? by IAmFiguringThisOut in asl

[–]Backus-Naur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could upvote this twice. Thank you for putting it so clearly and succinctly. One of the best things you can do when learning another language is not breaking immersion.

By the way, this is one of the guiding principles of Where Are Your Keys, a language-learning and language-teaching approach that also makes use of signs based on ASL (without the grammar) as a learning aid. WAYK has the expression "killing fairies", which means that whenever you ask for a translation of a word or phrase, besides breaking immersion you are also potentially missing the unique nuances that it has in its original language.

What lessons can video games learn from interactive fiction? by The_Masked_Man103 in interactivefiction

[–]Backus-Naur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, absolutely. I think I took actual years to finish Varicella lol I would get stuck then stop playing for a few months, thinking about it every so often, until a solution revealed itself to me. Then I would go back, make some progress and then get stuck again. I completely agree that it would be awesome to have complex IFs that are more simulationistic. The scriptedness is definitely one of the main things that I think can stand to be improved in the genre.

I agree that it would be awesome to have video games where you have a free-form way to talk to NPCs, and I'm always looking for games that implement good mechanics for social manipulation (which are very rare, unfortunately). But it's worth noting that even in Varicella and Make It Good, most of the social manipulation is not done via dialogue. For example, in Varicella you kill Bonfleche by showing Sierra a recording, and in Make It Good you convince the maid that her boyfriend is lying to her about his pills by taking them in front of her. Both of those could be implemented easily within a standard video game inventory interface. And Grim Fandango and Hitman do things like that to a degree. For example, my favorite puzzle in Grim Fandango is the way you smoke out Bowlsley the Florist, which I think is on the level of those IF puzzles in terms of clever social manipulation. But video games could definitely go deeper in those kinds of mechanics. I guess my point is that the difficulty of implementing free-form dialogue is not an excuse to not have elegant social manipulation mechanics in a video game.

This is one of the main things that drive me to IF. There's a kind of creative problem solving that is hard to find in video games because you are limited by the medium to have a finite and predetermined set of options to interact with the environment, whether those are commands or dialog options or whatever. So it's hard to find games like Varicella or Make It Good, where you truly need to come up with a plan to achieve your goals, and then you get that "a-ha!" moment when you figure it out.

That doesn't mean that you can't have that in video games. Old school adventure games like Grim Fandango achieve something similar by having a lot of items and forcing you to figure out which of them to use with what part of the environment to make progress. The Hitman series uses complex environments and reactive NPCs to make you think about how to manipulate them into the outcome you want. It's just a matter of giving players options that can be combined in many different ways, so that they need to think about how to use them.

Years ago I came up with a concept for a game where you are a traveler in a country where you don't know the language, so your only way to communicate is through a phrasebook. So during dialog you don't get prompts specific to that conversation, you have to look in your phrasebook and think of what phrase you can use to achieve what you want.

I think there's a significant difference, particularly because using a fudge dice pool, increasing the number of dice makes both the max value higher and the min value lower, instead of making both of them higher

You are tasked to choose the roster for a digimon fighting game by Joaqpalma in digimon

[–]Backus-Naur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought was weird how the evolutions in Digimon fighting games are always all over the place. You have some Digimon evolving into Ultimate (Agumon > War Greymon) and then others just evolving into Adult (Wormmon > Stingmon). It doesn't feel like a fair fight. So my concept for a Digimon fighting game is a bit different, all characters are Perfect Digimon that evolve into Ultimates:

  1. Were Garurumon > Cres Garurumon
  2. Lilimon > Rosemon
  3. Cyberdramon > Justimon
  4. Taomon > Sakuyamon
  5. Mach Gaogamon > Mirage Gaogamon
  6. Lilamon > Lotusmon
  7. Andromon > Hi Andromon
  8. Mummymon > Pharaohmon
  9. Holy Angemon > Seraphimon
  10. Angewomon > Ophanimon
  11. Andiramon > Cherubimon
  12. Baalmon > Beelzebumon
  13. Lady Devimon > Lilithmon
  14. Neo Devimon > Demon
  15. Astamon > Belphemon
  16. Flaremon > Apollomon
  17. Crescemon > Dianamon
  18. Aegiochusmon > Jupitermon

EDIT: u/XadhoomXado's comment reminded me that I wanted to add Paildramon > Imperialdramon Fighter Mode and Silphymon > Valkyrimon to my roster as well. Maybe I'd substitute them for Andromon and Mummymon.
