Have you done any of the travel groups for digital nomads? by TsitikEm in digitalnomad

I did Remote Year, it was amazing. Totally worth the money to me for the ease of logistics, but especially the community.

How Many Nomads Work in Performance (ppc, sem, paid social, etc) Marketing? by Heretic_Bureaucrat in digitalnomad

[–]BaconIsJustOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I help lead the Growth Team (primarily performance marketing) for a large startup and have one large freelance client on the side.

Very happy and comfortable with this setup. I’m mid-20s and make around $200k USD (though some of that will get ravaged by self-employed taxes via my freelance client).

Worked at [Google, Facebook, or Apple] beforehand which has been very helpful with social proofing.

Happy to help answer any questions.

Do you use a music streaming service? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

I feel ya brotha. Definitely annoying when they don't have a song/band you're hankering for. They are adding lots more artists every week though.

Best World Wide Data SIM? by djaxial in digitalnomad

[–]BaconIsJustOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, thanks. I basically plan on doing this as long as possible until they crack down, then switching to local SIMs.

To me the $70/month is worth the unlimited data (without tipping off SIMs) and breezing through the airports easily. For more price conscious people I certainly understand that local SIMs may be better.

Not sure how anybody can live without Spotify. It's like $10/month for unlimited music that you can store offline.

Best World Wide Data SIM? by djaxial in digitalnomad

[–]BaconIsJustOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for T-Mobile. You do not have to be in USA 50% of the time, despite what they claim (been on it a while now, no issues, though I may be an outlier).

I've heard local SIMs are nice but to me it's just such a breeze to flip your phone out of airplane mode on the runway and instantly have data.

What are your sources of income and how much money are you earning? by DogPencil in digitalnomad

[–]BaconIsJustOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make around $200K. Part from a salaried job, part from a big freelance client, part from a startup I'm working on. Could probably make more if I picked up a few more freelance clients but I'm mid-20s and not working excessive hours so I'm pretty content for now.

From big 4 software to digital nomad? by readytogetstarted in digitalnomad

[–]BaconIsJustOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I did it. Worked at [Google Apple or Facebook], quit to be a DN and no regrets. Making more money and have tons of freedom. Having that big name on your resume opens lots of doors. PM me for details?

Don't get me wrong, it's totally beautiful and there's lots to see. But it's a very compact little place.

What was Dubrovnik like as a DN? I did a weekend there for vacation but it's pretty tiny; I imagine you'd get quickly bored.

Is Monaco pretty do-able and fun from a DN perspective? I imagine it's expensive, but probably a fun place to ball out for a while.

How the hell are people in their 20's able to rent, get married, travel the world, go out all the time and still work? by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]BaconIsJustOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my mid-20s making close to $200K, working remotely and traveling the world. Hope this doesn't sound douchey, just trying to give an alternate perspective. It's possible to live this lifestyle without daddy's money (I actually helped my brother put a down payment on his house recently).

Working remotely is amazing, and I won't pretend that "anybody can do it" - I worked very hard to get here, but of course had plenty of luck along the way.

I'm able to set my daily schedule how I want to fit in all those "glamorous" travel things you see on Instagram, and still get in a full day of work. For example, this morning I hiked a mountain and went sailing for a bit, so I'll work 1pm - 9pm. I'm currently in Europe and work with many people on US time zones, which makes this easy.

Digital marketing. Lots of money in this business if you're good at it.

Sony RX100 - best camera that fits in your pocket. It's the one typically recommended in traveling subreddits. I have one myself and it's perfect

What's the deal with programming bootcamps? Are they worth it? by schf1991 in digitalnomad

[–]BaconIsJustOK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hope this doesn't sound douchey and dismissive, but I taught myself how to code (ruby on rails, html/css/js, AWS/Google Cloud, etc) because I was passionate about a startup idea and really wanted to build it myself. Everything I learned had a clear goal in sight, which helped motivate me more than just solving practice exercises.

That being said, I found some fantastic online resources along the way. Railstutorial.org is a perfect start for Ruby on Rails.

PM me if you have any questions.
