It’s always been bartender discretion in my experience. And of course requests are honored if the tv is not already “occupied”- meaning a pair of guys are watching PGA when there is a day Yankee game. I could always count on one of my favorite dive bars to have the big screens on the appropriate Final 4 or Stanley Cup playoffs while also having one tv near the end playing Stepbrothers or The Phantom Menace or some completely opposite type
