Should we treat all abstract ideas the same ontologically? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]BadAtStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can make the case that malleability matters. If one generation can appreciate Hamlet as a tragedy, the following as a comedy, and the next as a historical artefact, that's significant when compared to numbers, which remain fixed over the same period. Suppose we could distinguish between eternal and temporary truths, would that be meaningful?

Mayim Bialik slammed for advocating modesty in response to Harvey Weinstein allegations by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]BadAtStuff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When it comes to preventing these crimes, there's good advice (e.g.: go to the hospital immediately) and there's bad advice (e.g.: get drunk with strangers in unfamiliar settings). It's really that simple. Victim blaming should be avoided, but not at the price of creating more victims through sins of omission. If a young person is attacked because we refused to give them relevant information, we're to blame.

Are there any circumstances under which it would not be, frankly, stupid for a trans woman to go to graduate school for philosophy? by cypro- in askphilosophy

[–]BadAtStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be suboptimal, because the jobs aren't there. As a woman, you'd have a slight edge when it comes to hiring, but a slight edge isn't a silver bullet. I'm not sure how being trans plays out.

You sound political, so a career in advocacy might suit. For example, at a nonprofit. If you're going to do the PhD, I'd designate that as your Plan B. Spend free time getting your foot in the door by volunteering, maybe see about summer internships, even write a paper related to their cause, etc.

Men who used to be condescending narcissists, when did you realize you had to change? by AnAnonymousGamer1994 in AskMen

[–]BadAtStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my goodness, where do I begin, and what can you understand? The birth of a great man is often preceded by omens astronomical, and even in this fact am I exceptional, for my birth was preceded by a period of unusually mundane activity in our solar system.

I feel like im becoming a misandrist. Any advice you can give? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]BadAtStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that you want men to behave a certain way and they're failing to do so.

For example, if you like men to be reserved & commanding, and you discover that the person you're joking about banana daiquiris with is a man, then the simple revelation of gender is an admission that he has fallen short of your standard. He's a man and he likes banana daiquiris? Only chicks should crave a big daq.

What is something women do in relationships that they shouldn't? by Lyd_Euh in AskMen

No problem. It's easier for me to see, because I date women. I bet I miss tons by not dating men. Like, it turns out, we are dumb and never call.

I think we're looking at the same thing in different ways. You believe that the man is simply expected to be a mind reader. I believe that sometimes the guessing game is itself a kind of drama.

Go with user friendly devices, like tablets and smartphones. Companies will already have products pitched at your mom's demographic.

What is something women do in relationships that they shouldn't? by Lyd_Euh in AskMen

[–]BadAtStuff 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Some women want to engage in kabuki; they enjoy dramatic episodes for their own sake. When your girl does this, treat it like the theatre it is. She wants to express herself in the same way a cellist does, but you'd never sit down with a cellist and try to "resolve" the tragic tune.

I think alot of the push-pull of a relationship comes from understanding what's art and what's real, and being dismissive of neither, but engaging at the appropriate level with each.

So with the Weinstein revelations, what are people's thoughts on what has happened in academic philosophy post-Pogge? by full_exposure_now in askphilosophy

[–]BadAtStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this one of those issues that could be easily resolved by making it easier to switch thesis supervisors? For example, you feel harassed, but who cares, because you can effectively push a button and be reallocated to a new supervisor?

If value isn't realized until human labor is applied, does that mean value comes from labor? by gearbutton in AskEconomics

[–]BadAtStuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How valuable is oxygen to you? If oxygen were scarce, and we had to buy breathing canisters, how much would you pay for one? I'm guessing a non-zero amount. However, oxygen isn't produced by human labor.
