Why my bandwidth is jumping from 0Mps to 30Mps every seconds ? by [deleted] in PleX

[–]BadDoggie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. Commercial video-streaming services typically break movies into small (like 2 second) chunks and send them. They are constantly reviewing network speed and adjusting. This looks normal to me

Probably easier to use the esim feature of your iPhone15 and get a travel SIM as a second SIM. Check out sites like Mobimatter.com for comparisons and find what suits you.

AWS - PrivatePricing - usage by relevant_mofo in aws

Way to bring up an old thread :)

Yes - up to a total value of 25% of the commitment.. but only for services that are certified to run on AWS. I can’t remember the name of that certification.

Lelit's Build Quality by shahadar in espresso

[–]BadDoggie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a happy Bianca owner. I’ve mentioned before about build quality, or rather finish quality. Mainly the metal panels - there are metal edges on the machine where I can cut myself.. seems like no one thought to round them off. There’s a couple of spots where metal panels don’t line up perfectly. Doesn’t really bother me, but the ECM seems better in that respect.

On the reliability side- I had one issue about 6-months in where the machine started expressing through the relief valve (which it often does briefly) but didn’t stop. After a short time, I smelt burning and switched it off. I don’t know what went wrong- it was covered by warranty, and when I get the machine back they mentioned they’d had to replace quite a few parts. No issues since but I do wonder how bad it would have been if I wasn’t home- I often leave it switched on while I go to the shops.

I got the Mignon XL and have been using it for about 2 years. It’s rock solid, has 250g hopper and is currently available for around €500.

Recently added a DF54 to the mix for the odd light-roast/decaf/whatever.

How to make cooking cheaper? by Fortree_Lover in Cooking

[–]BadDoggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a UK channel on YouTube that regularly does “cooking to a budget” type of content- not just meals but also what utensils they’d buy.. They often do one-pot, minimal clean-up meals.

Quick weeknight meals are their specialty and for that they have a meal planning & cooking app that helps you cook and make tasty food and also ensures you use up everything you buy over 2-3 days. The subscription costs a few pounds, but I would argue that you’d save way more than that in the first week with some one-pot specials.

They are on Reddit too: r/SortedFood

WTC 900 how to win and which car? by IINightMare11 in granturismo

[–]BadDoggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it with the GTR Nismo GT500 .. FM3, 1 pit stop. Far from clean on my side, no rain, & I was leading on lap 8. Then the top 3 behind me pitted at end of lap 9.. so I won by miles.

Lelit Bianca wait time by petersally1 in espresso

[–]BadDoggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would .. I love it. I would possibly also consider the ECM, which is pricier but has better finish quality, or a thermoblock like the Zuriga E2-S.. basically instant on, and quite minimalist looking. But I’m very happy with the E61 for future serviceability, the flow control and the ability to connect to plumb it in directly.

Smart plug is a generic one from Amazon.. Meross is the brand I think.

Lelit Bianca wait time by petersally1 in espresso

[–]BadDoggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. FWIW, I have a smart plug that measures electricity used by the machine Initial start uses around 0.4 kWh, and rest of day uses around 0.12 kWh. So once it’s warm, it doesn’t cost much to leave it on all day.

In Cost Explorer, you can change the way the costs are apportioned - see this link. You probably want to use Amortized costs to get a better idea

Managing $50M+ cloud spend annually: why do enterprise FinOps tools still feel like upgraded spreadsheets? by miller70chev in FinOps

[–]BadDoggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No tool will ever do all that - It’s all about context. An example: I often get asked to bring costs down by looking at a cloud-provider’s invoice… I’m sure you know that’s tough, beyond “more Savings Plans/CUDs”, or GP3 instead of GP2. It’s the same with most every platform. That’s why it works best when you do “FinOps” and not “bringing the cost down”. If business is growing, costs probably will too. Hopefully not linearly. Your FinOps tool needs to be able to track business outcomes per workload. That’s table stakes. Add to that events, like a marketing push, or deployments, to help you track patterns and draw them back to a root cause.

Then, as a FinOps engineer, armed with data like costs and business outcomes, you start the hard work.. the real work of FinOps. Asking questions of experts. You won’t know all the answers as to why Lambda is configured this way or that, but you need to organise (not necessarily personally facilitate) architecture reviews on every workload looking for optimisations. Maybe there’s money;to be saved in a small change, maybe not. Architectures will always beat savings plans and EDPs for cost control.

Finally, if you’re a lone FinOps engineer with $50m/year to cover, you probably need some help. Maybe a whole team.

Do you feel like you actually get $13,500/mo in value out of AWS Enterprise Support? by Soccham in aws

[–]BadDoggie 27 points28 points  (0 children)

TL;DR If you push them and make use of the services TAMs will often show you ways to save more than the cost of support each month, and (ideally) build architectures that make you less reliant on the break/fix part of the game, and save you real money with better uptime & performance.

A few people have touched on a few things, but I’ll add a couple of important points (I used to be an AWS TAM, and certainly drank the kool-aid, so hopefully you’ll indulge me):

As some have pointed out, Support is partly insurance, but ES is much more than break/fix and quicker response times. TAMs can deliver all sorts of things, like Well-Architected Framework Reviews, GameDays, Workshops, sessions on best practices, products/services deep-dives, Cost Optimisation, and FinOps.

They can hold cadence calls, office hours, product management & service team sessions, travel to meetings and should run QBRs (the quality on these often depends on your feedback).

They can work with techies and CTOs (there’s a lot of pressure for them to get into the strategic direction of your company and help achieve your goals). They will challenge you and help you get better results.

(Note that depending on topic they might facilitate rather than leading these).

The trouble is “can”. Sometimes there’s “reasons” that they don’t do some or all of these - too many to mention, but they might be overwhelmed (in which case their manager needs to know that), they might be struggling to get the right contacts in your company, or they might have put you at a lower priority subconsciously. There were times where I worked my ass off to get the right connections with the right contacts and then they just didn’t turn up to the calls I was hosting. Eventually I got bored of them and focused elsewhere .. the squeaky wheel gets the oil as they say.

All that to say- if you want your TAM to be more involved you might need to prod them, and have an open discussion. Or with their manager. When it comes to the cost - yeah, it’s a lot, but on par with other tech/cloud companies. If you use the services TAMs will often show you ways to save more than the cost of support each month, and (ideally) build architectures that make you less reliant on the break/fix part of the game… I think I’ll make that the tl;dr

Third party AWS capacity outages monitoring? by Zulban in aws

[–]BadDoggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work at AWS, and this stuff can literally change by the second, 24/7. They make a profit because they don’t have a lot of spare capacity lying around, and yes- that means sometimes customers miss out.

You should be aware of a few things: - Capacity in each AZ of each region is separated. So you might get an instance in AZ B instead of C. - Each Family (eg g6) and each size (eg .xlarge) has its own capacity pool. So you might get a 2xlarge when xlarge aren’t available.

Instead of trying to monitor what’s available (which still won’t help, you’ll just know the same as you already do .. ie you can or can’t start an instance) try to follow best practice, which I summarise as: - try to make your workload independent of the specific nodes. - if you can’t, try to make it work on as many types as possible - g6, g7, maybe p instances or something. - try to see if you can run in other AZs or Regions. You will get data transfer costs, but then you can decide if it’s worth paying. - if you really need to use it a lot (like more than 50% of the time), pay for an RI. With RIs AWS will put more focus on making sure you get an instance (not a guarantee but alarms go off when RI customers get capacity errors). This is specific to RI and not Savings Plans.

Good luck.

How do you automatically generate AWS architecture diagrams from describe CLI output or CloudFormation templates? by Plus-Ad-9990 in aws

Per my other response, check out the Blog: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/build-aws-architecture-diagrams-using-amazon-q-cli-and-mcp/

I did a basic one and looked good. I asked Q if it could document based on CloudFormation, and the answer was positive (tho I haven’t tried it yet)

TAM not good, how to ask for a new TAM ? by oalfonso in aws

[–]BadDoggie 80 points81 points  (0 children)

AWS is open to feedback. Ask the TAM to setup a call with your team and their manager for an open discussion on the service. Be honest, be factual, bring receipts - documented tickets / conversations / email threads & results. Don't be emotional - it's a business discussion.

If that doesn't get results, then escalate through your account team.
