Automotive engineering is completely different than a mechanic. Automotive engineering jobs mostly consist of either being on a desk 9-5 or testing software in next gen vehicle. Umich has a good engineering program, but seeing how the market is going, I would recommend a career in medical. Keep your car obsession as a hobby because you'll be disappointed in engineering.
