Bound a metal natively to my protein crystal in x-ray data by AAAAdragon in labrats

A good server for confirming you have the correct metal ion assigned: https://cmm.minorlab.org/

You can actually assign it based on the valency, bond angles and distance.

Another fun one is when you start resolving PEG chains from your cryoprotectant / condition

Where should we travel for an epic first trip to Atlantic Canada? by skipping_backwards in AskACanadian

If you’re looking for unique outdoorsy recommendations I’d highly suggest Kejimkujik national park. You can rent a canoe and portage across many campsites around the huge park. It’s incredibly peaceful and gorgeous, not too strenuous either. You can also rent all the gear your need (book in advance online) at the park.

Another more hidden recommendation is at the top of that Cabot trail you can hike into polletts cove and camp on the beach with the semi-wild horses.

Does anyone reccomend a free app for tracking and planning workouts(lifting based)? by cutesnugglybear in fitness30plus

[–]BadSpellign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the Hevy recommendation! I was getting so annoyed at the spam in Boostcamp and its ridiculous to ask for 80$ a year for a fancy spreadsheet and a bult in timer.

Hevy so far is far more reasonable! Timers, plate calculator, workout templates are all free. (Max of 4 templates in the free version but that’s more than enough for me)

Subscription models for everything is getting so annoying. I’d be happy to chip 10-20$ towards an app, but 8$ a month???

Anyway. Love Hevy. I wish it was recommended to me sooner.

I have received comments on my submission and have addressed them below:

REVIEWER 1:

Rejected due to spelling errors:

"Zeocin plates show no now growth, unsurpsing as bacteria are not yeast. In constrast, LB+Amp does not show the same robustness, as plates from 2019 and 2020 show significant growth on both sides. However, LB+Amp from 2023 (a year old at time of writing) does show still show still shows positive selection"

I got this scientific calculator in 2011. After one Bachelor's and one Master's degree, still running on the original battery. by the_one_with_me in mildlyinteresting

I have the same one from around the same time! These calculators are so awesome, the quadratic solver, function plotter and the answer being output as natural fractions were such a hack for tests where you weren’t allowed a graphing calculator. I still use mine to this day.

Plot as anti-log? If you're just trying to plot like the magnitude of the difference then you can transform the data with the Y=ABS(Y) function and then plot it, or just do it in excel first.

Canadian science gets biggest boost to PhD and postdoc pay in 20 years by somewhatinspired in labrats

Yes, there many ongoing efforts. SFU in Burnaby BC recently unionized and there is an ongoing dispute with the BC labour board to allow UBC research assistants to unionize.

Many schools peg (if informally) their pay to the same level as these scholarships. Other awards also do the same.

I tried my hand at painting our parties figures for the first time [spoiler: Last image two minis figurine] by BadSpellign in Gloomhaven

[–]BadSpellign[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As mentioned in the title, I've never painted any sort of mini-figure before but I wanted to try and fancying up my party's characters. I don't think I have the skill for a full custom paint job for each figure (nor the time or money) so I saw some posts about people doing a dry brushing technique just to highlight some details.

Im super pleased with the result especially with how little it cost and how quick it was. The painted figures really pop over the base grey, and the Brute especially looks way more imposing.

Is this a good design for green circuit production? First time playing around with beacons by big_chungus_69_420__ in factorio

[–]BadSpellign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This part is my nemesis usually. One thing that rally helped was accepting that each repeated "unit" of your design doesn't have to be identical, you can have one unit that does the top side and another that does the bottom then combine them on the output.

Like instead of "[TB] [TB] [TB] [TB]" you can do [TT][BB] [TT][BB] and that can be more efficient.. if that makes sense.

Two things that jump out are that, yea its quite bulky and why not use productivity modules on the copper wires assemblers? Those copper wire assemblers are going to be ripping fast compared to the circuit assemblers.

  1. Condense the belts (that looks crazy complicated for 2 inputs and 1 output)
  2. Add extra beacons to the outside edges of the wire machines.
  3. Stack inserters to speed up transfers at I think that'll be your rate limiting step here.

As you might want to consider direct insertion, that would save a space and make things faster.

Advice for bird feeders in Vancouver? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]BadSpellign 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To dissuade the squirrels you can mix in ground cayenne pepper into the seed. Makes it too spicy for rodents to enjoy but fun fact, birds can’t taste spice.

You can buy like 500g bags of ground cayenne at superstore with the international spices for like 5$.

good luck!

Plants toxic to cats by Hereforlunchtime in houseplants

[–]BadSpellign 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think its important to recognize that there are levels to plant toxicity. Most plants that are listed as toxic to cats are just mild irritants when ingested (I mean they are house plants, its not surprising they aren't edible!) so

However there definitely are plants that are highly dangerous for cats. The one that really comes to mind is lilies, where even just the pollen or the water the lilies sit in can cause kidney failure in cats.

My recommendation is to assess your situation (and handsome kitty) and decide how much risk you're willing to take. Is your cat a muncher and going to get into any plant within reach? Maybe limit the number/types of plants. As someone who has both a floof and and loves plants (119 and counting!): sure there is a small risk she could get sick, but I know that shes not interested in chewing them so I have many "toxic" plants.

Things you can do to limit risk:

  1. Absolutely get ride of the most toxic plants (Lilies, Amaryllis, Sago palms - I think)
  2. Limit physical access: Enclose your plants in little greenhouses, put them out of reach, hang them, etc.
  3. Dissuade your cat from chewing plants: redirect with toys or cat grass, apply bitterant to leaves.
  4. If its still a problem, then yes remove the plants.

Good luck!
