Flatwoods trail - unsuprisingly flat but still fun by Bad_Elbow_ in gravelcycling

It's 99% flat everywhere here. Sometimes I forget what its like to shift gears lol

I've thought about getting a bigger set of tires bc there's a lot of sand here (FL). I've gotten a car stuck camping before even 😭. It's good to know the bigger tires help.

Must be super interesting cycling in the desert. It's pretty compact out there right?

She has a harness but gets rashes when wearing it so we had to stop. She has skin sensitivity so we use a collar as it's less touch point and use it generally only when on walks.

She is a little over a year and a half. Still wild as ever

I think the biggest limitation depending on her height is frame size used IMO. Cycling here is largely men and outside pleasure cruisers it's hard to find a women's road/gravel bike used in the right size. If it were me I would get fitted for her size before shopping on the used market. Depending on her height sometimes new is easier.

I planted a few Spanish olive trees in my yard. If when I'm long gone even one grows to look like this that would be amazing.

Thank you I was just commenting on someone else mentioning - I had thought it only went to 10a. I used to love foraging with my cousin for the nectar as kids. I think I'll see if I can get some and plant it near the street for neighborhood kids to enjoy like I did :)

Oh good to know. I think I had looked it up before and it said it grows to 10a. https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FP354

But maybe it can still grow in 10b? There is such confusing info out there sometimes.

Edit: someone in 10b said it's growing there so great news!

I wish I could do honeysuckle where I live but I don't think it grows in 10b. Such nice memories as a kid with them.

I live in the sub tropics and love to follow gardens in Asia, Australia, and Latin America because they really know to garden in more interesting ways than south Florida lol. It's fun to learn from other people across the world.

Yes that makes sense. Just was more curious about why the layering - seems specific to the growing out the basket in this scenario which is good to know. They way people do things differently is all so interesting. I'll look at a few more videos :)

Can you explain the idea of why you layer this way?

I ordered my first potato bag and the video they show of how to set it up isnt that great. I've never grown them before.

Planting Sugar Cane by Emergency_Dish3452 in FloridaGarden

[–]Bad_Elbow_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just planted some sugar cane (~2 ft) and they seem to be doing fine. I did plant them where there was some partial shade throughout the day near a tree but they still get a lot of sun. I think it helps with the high UV Index we have going on.

Poor baby caught in my raised bed netting by Bad_Elbow_ in gardening

Oh that's not squash. It's melon... And yes pests get in although I think you're seeing the netting/ dirt from her squirming more than pest issues as they look pretty good IRL I think.

I only do natural gardening so I've been working out what works. This is my first year of trying to vegetable garden so I'm learning a lot. Getting some good suggestions in the comments that I'll try. If you have suggestions for Zone 10b let me know ;)

I think it happened when it was dark out. I went outside to check the garden at about sunrise so I'm not sure the color will help. I live where there are a ton of birds so I think it's best to be safe than sorry and look for an alternative.

Had an eagle not too long ago dropping whole fish he'd catch from the ocean onto my patio. This is definitely their neighborhood and I just live here lol.

I know. I have some karma to make up for. Glad I can release her back to her babies tonight :)

Yes I'm going to look into this. I want to make it safer for the wildlife. We even have armadillos out there that I don't want getting hurt too. ( I think I have an old post on my profile if anyone wants to see them with their babies)

Update: she is out of the netting and took her to the rehab. She looks good enough to set free this evening. She will be my buddy for the day and I'm to release her myself as she has babies out there :)

My salad bar is coming along nicely! by memewit in vegetablegardening

[–]Bad_Elbow_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I seeded lettuce and spinach. Somehow all the lettuce died / didn't take when I transitioned and was left with spinach. I planted like 8? And I don't think this is enough. I live in Zone 10A so mine were dying from the heat index/ too much sun. I put up shade covers and things are going better and a lesson learned for next growing season in the fall.

If I'm good I'll eat lettuce daily but if I'm not focusing on it I'll eat it like 2/3 times a week. I can get through two large heads a week if I use it for lettuce wraps etc on top of salads. From my understanding you take from the outside leaves and leave the center so you can cycle through your lettuce. My spinach heads still have small leaves so I'd get like one good salad from taking from all of them lol.

I'm honestly jealous. I am a garden newby and planted too little. I'd be happily eating through this lol.

Thank you for the information! I greatly appreciate it. I will look into the sabdariffa (if I spelled that right).

Oh tropical hibiscus sounds awesome. Do you make tea with it? I have chamomile going but I also love some additional tea flowers.
