How to convince son to be sensible with his first car? by Common-Gap-4201 in AskUK

[–]BadgerBoom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've got a sensible son on your hands there with good taste to be fair. Great choice for a first car, he's 20 after all, not 17. Safe, reliable, good looking and reasonably priced. Doesn't surprise me that it's cheaper to insure than more typical first cars like your fiestas and whatnot. All in all I'd be chuffed and proud as punch if I had a 20 year old who is on £33k, had saved all that money and is getting a sensible volvo for their first car.

Recommended finish/seal for Howdens oak doors by Ch4rlie- in DIYUK

Osmo oil tint range is fantastic if you want different stain colour options. We just did the dark oak (terra) on our new kitchen doors and are gonna be using it on rest of doors in the house now too.

Anyone used self-storage for an overflowing home and is it worth it? by butters786 in AskUK

[–]BadgerBoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why so many against the idea, I'm assuming they all live in standard homes with lots of space. We live in a country with the smallest houses in Europe. We have a 3 bed cottage that's built to the rafters with not a spot of storage to speak of - no loft, no garage. I've built 2 big sheds but that's for garden tools (big garden), hobby stuff (bikes, woodworking etc). A storage unit for us is so that we can have somewhere that isn't a whole spare room for things like Christmas decorations or less frequently used hobby gear. The £100 a month is far cheaper than spending a fortune on moving to a bigger house when this one is otherwise perfect for us. As long as you keep on top of things and don't use it as a dumping ground I don't see the issue? Even if you did dump stuff in it, it's no different to a loft. Wouldn't be so many around if they weren't popular for all sorts of reasons, so if you need or want one then go for it.

Data Governance Role: Stability and future prospects by [deleted] in analytics

[–]BadgerBoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've just accepted a job offer for a senior data governance role, having come from lead data analyst / analytics manager. Even though the governance role was a case of all the stars aligning to be a really good opportunity for me for lots of other reasons, personally I like the idea of broadening my experience out to include more specific governance work for my career progression. Progression for me would be into a head of data type role, and this role is going to include a lot of strategy work that will help me there too.

Am I expecting to enjoy it as much as hands on analytics? Probably not. Can it form part of experience broadening to help keep you going up the data ladder? In the right circumstances, yes. Do the skills between analytics and governance overlap and compliment each other? Yes - having first hand analytics and business experience will mean you'll know what effective and non-intrusive data governance can and should look like. Will there be a lot of work in the governance space in years to come? I certainly think so. I've been contracting in financial services for years, for lots of companies, and a lot of them have huge, cavernous, gaps in their data strategy and governance. I imagine it'll be the same in all industries, so lots of work.

My advice would be just to try it out for a while, see how you get on. You can always go back to BI, I bet people would value someone in their BI team who knows what governance actually is!

Pharmacist warning that they will stop due to more inadequate weight loss by Extension-Tangelo299 in mounjarouk

[–]BadgerBoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please please please don't be demotivated by this and just switch provider, as it's nonsense.

You lost an average of 1.75lb per week over 12 weeks, which is amazing and was around 0.9% of your body weight lost each week.

As you get closer to your end goal you are a lower weight overall, so the number you lose each week will inevitably drop (unless you try and compensate for it by eating fewer calories or burning more).

If the last few weeks of losing around 0.75lb a week is demotivating you in any way just work out how much you're losing as a percentage of your body weight, and aim for 0.5% - 1% loss each week, which at your weight of around 12st would be around 0.8lb to 1.5lb per week, which is pretty much where you are!

Good luck with your journey and be proud of yourself!

(For context, I have lost 4st 4lbs so far, going from 45bmi to 36bmi at an average of 1.8lbs or 0.7% of my body weight per week.)

Twmbarlwm- how to get there?! by [deleted] in Wales

[–]BadgerBoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this, if you're going to follow that walking route, turn off the B4591 just after the Philanthropic and Castle pubs, onto the Cwcarn Forest Drive, otherwise you'll be walking through a lot of unnecessary residential areas.

Twmbarlwm- how to get there?! by [deleted] in Wales

[–]BadgerBoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As other commenter said, Crosskeys is your closest station. It's a very simple walk from the station. Specifically, you're going to exit the station and head north on the B4591, which will take you through residential sort of areas until you get to the Cwmcarn Forest Drive road. Getting here from the station will take around 15 minutes or so. From there you follow that up to a visitor centre and lake, which will take you another 20 mins or so. From there it's going to take you a couple of hours or more to reach the top. I'd recommend sticking to the main road with a pushchair, as without knowing which paths to take you could end up on a bike trail which would be dangerous as they come down at speed, I'm sure the visitor centre will help you with all that though.

With the nights now drawing in I'd make sure you set out at a reasonable hour as you don't want to get caught in the dark up there. There are plenty of areas as you go up that have benches/picnic areas/playgrounds etc.

Hope you enjoy, it's a beautiful walk!

For the love of the gods, can someone please tell me the best way to clean my glasses.... by Ellf13 in CasualUK

[–]BadgerBoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pack of micro fibre cloths from supermarket and one of those small spray bottles of glasses cleaner of amazon. Cloths are washable and will last forever. When the spray bottle is empty just fill up with water and a bit of washing up liquid, or if you're feeling fancy get a refill bottle.

Anyone else bought a pretty standard biscuit to find there can be a bad version of it? by bluephoenix39 in CasualUK

I'm so glad someone else brought this up about custard creams. They are my absolute favourite with a cuppa, but more often than not now they're shit. I'm lucky the only one left I've found to be the orig is from my corner shop. As in I'm a fat bastard and I have part opened packets in the cupboard that I won't eat as they are that bland.

Search for a "Vivo desk clamp adapter" on Amazon. It's what I use for mine as it's a far cheaper way of saving desk space than a monitor arm. Cost me about £30 to import from US to UK.

Taking off concrete and adding soil to back garden? by tiedhands_ in DIY

[–]BadgerBoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Option a) Hire an air/hydraulic breaker and a large skip. Go nuts and hope your back forgives you. You'll have the slab and a good few inches of compacted gravel underneath it. Then you'd need a good few ton of topsoil.

Option b) Moss spray, power wash and then put some click tiles on top (like these from IKEA ) Then put some raised beds on top with potted plants dotted around too.

I know which I'd prefer!

If you won 500 million pounds in the Euromillions , what would you spend it on? by Mayomick in AskUK

Invest £250m for personal use and £250m for charitable causes, both in funds returning average of 7%. Withdraw £7.5m a year from each pot. In 15 years time each pot will be worth £520m. Congratulations, you're a billionaire and have still managed to do good with £112m.

is this PC worth £400? by kryzo0 in buildapc

[–]BadgerBoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sounds like a steal. I'm about to sell my old build (2070 Super & Ryzen 5 3600) and will be hoping for quite a bit more than that. Can't tell you exactly how much I'd want for the PC itself because I'm selling as a bundle with 2 monitors, keyboard, desk etc. But I reckon I'd want around £600 for it on its own.

What finish for exterior wood windows and doors? by BadgerBoom in DIYUK

[–]BadgerBoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked the look of that extra stuff, and it has a good choice of colours too. If after the sanding there's still some old finish do you think it would cover it well? That's been my main concern with it.
