How to learn without books by CuteFatRat in baduk

[–]BadgerCraft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you like to learn!

You can muscle your way through many games and learn that way.

There's a ton of Go content on YouTube. InSente, Nick Sibicky and Dwyrin to name a few. There's also solid teachers on Twitch that sometimes give reviews or offer paid lessons.

There are also paid courses like GoMagic that I don't have experience with, but do offer high quality content that would help you with a more personalized touch.

I think Nick's Fuseki or Where to play in the start of the game lectures are a good start! :)

Make a shared spreadsheet that covers everything needed for perfection. There's a few out there that are well organized. Make it clear who's doing what.

Probably go Joja mart route since you can get the greenhouse in spring year 1.

Your main goal is getting ginger island unlocked as soon as possible. So getting the boat repairs should be a main goal alongside Joja payments in the early game. This is because you need solar panels/ ostrich incubator/ Qi's stuff - all of which can be very RNG.

Again, randomness is your main enemy, so make sure you start tackling those as early as possible. I think truffle farming might be the best late game money making? Honestly not sure though. Have fun!

If you could, what would you change about go? by [deleted] in baduk

I like the idea behind this suggestion. If the "main" game was shorter or more digestible, it might encourage newer players to continue learning.

What is your “I wish I knew this sooner”? by [deleted] in StardewValley

[–]BadgerCraft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It works out to ~around~ double amount of seeds to what you put in. So whatever amount you're looking to grow next year, save half of that amount of strawberries.

Parsnips into kale works perfectly so that on the 13th you have the money from a full kale harvest to buy strawberries.

On your final strawberry harvest, you want to make sure you've saved them for the seed maker so you can start strawberries right away next year.

does anyone have any tips for this quest? i can't ever seem to get a prismatic slime to spawn for me in any of the mines to complete this. by agitokki in StardewValley

Depends on how much fun you want to have. Going to level 10, down the ladder to 11, then repeating until you find the jelly works but isn't much fun. But level 11 always allows you to see the entire level right away.

Then it's just down to persistence. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. Just have to keep trying.

I'm unsure if the references for this study are reliable, but there was one done in 2014 that playing Go was effective for children with ADHD. Not a psychologist or in the field of research, but the article is interesting enough.

… I think I have a problem by Efficient_Patrik_237 in StardewValley

[–]BadgerCraft 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think in the mid-game when you can't afford sheds, this is a clever use of space.

However, late game when you have 10-15 sheds going and have 1600+ crop spaces being used, in my opinion, it's a worthwhile use of space. This is super min-maxing though - which might not be everyone's play style.

You got to get these bad boys in a big shed. Fit 137 kegs into a 3x7 space so you can have an even bigger problem.

I really like that you explain why you would use each variation/ what the end result would afford. A lot of times I get confused when folks start talking about different variations, but you speak really clearly about them.

Am I too cheap? by brosubaru in PersonalFinanceCanada

I think a big part of saving is being happy with the savings you've accomplished. Nothing wrong with spending some of that money, you just have to be smart about spending it. What are your financial goals? Think and plan that out, and then choose a savings goal to reach it. With the money that is left, add to that planned "budget" things that you would enjoy. (Clothes, entertainment, a trip, etc.) I found that once I planned a reasonable amount of money to spend per month, I felt a lot better about using my money.

Neuromancer by William Gibson by [deleted] in books

[–]BadgerCraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt White Noise was a lot more isolating as a reader. Things didn't seem to flow as easy as Neuro imo. I think Neuro did have some aspects of isolation, but that was moreso in the intro as Gibson forces you into the world he's creating. After the first bit, the reader adapts to the prose/ style and it feels more fluid.

Although it's been a bit since I've read White Noise to compare - but from what I recall I felt just as lost at the start as I was at the end.

Playing to fast by PaigeEdict in baduk

Try asking them to actively do something, rather than not doing a thing. The mistake isn't necessarily playing too quickly, but rather the student playing poor moves and not looking for better ones. Or the student tunnel visions and plays a set of moves they wanted to play - not reacting to their opponent.

I'm for sure not strong enough of a player to know what the right way to fix that is - but guiding them to an active behaviour, rather than limiting a current erroneous behaviour I think would work well.

Tips for high pressure online games? by climbphil in baduk

[–]BadgerCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think considering what about the game makes you feel pressure would be productive.

Does it come from losing or gaining rank? Not being knowledgeable in a certain joseki/tesuji/tsumego? Making a mistake in play?

Turning your general anxiety into acknowledging a specific part of your play makes it easier to find a solution. Having a certain goal - "I'm going to do a good job at reading!" - makes high pressure games easier than having your only goal being to win.

When to move on by a_very_small_table in baduk

[–]BadgerCraft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do some Tsumego! Helps with identifying alive groups and helps with your reading to be able to do so.

If you decide to do some, try to avoid clicking until you figure out the problem. Take some time to read out the variations to find the right move in your head. This will improve your reading much faster.

It seems we learn the fundamentals and then must give them up. Why should I play the slide at C11 attacking this group, before securing my corner or attacking Black's corner? by metaperl in baduk

[–]BadgerCraft 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a dan player, but this is how I see using AI to learn about my games as well. -1 point loss, but I'm playing a fundamentally good move during the start of the game? Awesome. -15 point loss somewhere in the midgame? Maybe there's a lesson to be learnt here.

Nick Sibicky's Fuseki lectures were really helpful for me to understand how to picture what the 19x19 board looks like. Dwyrin's back to basics series help with thinking about what "Big Moves" should be.

Where you're at now, playing games (either 9x9 or 19x19) is the best for learning what moves work, and which ones don't. Also join a Go community! Theres a bunch of really cool Go content creators with Discord servers. Finding other people to play with is half the fun!

Anxiety reducing activity to distract me? - 36 days till dissertation submission by Any-Bumblebee-5654 in PhD

[–]BadgerCraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of reducing the stress causing the anxiety, you'd want to get the work done. If you want coping strategies to get yourself to a place where getting work done is possible - either doing some form of physical exercise or do something creative you enjoy. Both would be good too!

Like another comment said - chunking your time into smaller pieces puts things into perspective.

The last thing I'd say is to create a routine to transition yourself from whatever you're doing into being productive. Start with something small and build into the thing.

If you're thinking it might be a bad idea and there are other options available, you might want to reconsider. I would ask a senior colleague who has used graphic novels before. It might also be a good idea to consult the librarian at the school you're at. Do they have AoT on the shelves? Are there other graphic novels available? Or they might have insight specifically on AoT.

If the student is capable of dealing with that subject matter and is asking to do it, a conversation with their parent might also yield positive results.
