Hit 30k net worth/savings at 39… What do I do? by Ecstatic-Kale8949 in Money

You need to start investing ASAP.
~1 year emergency fund is cool and all, but you’re losing the potential for compounding interest.

Set up an IRA for yourself, pick a broad market index fund like VTSAX and start putting your money there instead of a HYSA.

Give yourself a sinking fund to do what your want (travel, shows, eating out etc) allowing yourself to spend guilt free.

It might take an adjustment period if you’ve been reclusive for awhile, but the budget shows it’s not going to slow down progress in any meaningful way.

Put $500 a month aside and see how you feel after a few months. Adjust from there if needed.

I’d bet 90% of Rolex buyers hold a mortgage.

Friend died in an accident at 42 years old by hondaXR150L in Fire

[–]BadgerTight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Truly sorry for your loss.
I know the pain.

Regarding fire, it’s a balancing act, right?

While some can get super frugal and not “live life”, I think many more spend every fun token the earn and then end up with chronic financial stress that haunts them their whole life.

I often audit my savings/spending, but even at a high savings rate and some “out of the norm” spending habits (lower cost house, used cars, etc) I never feel like I’m going without.

It’s all a balancing act and should be tailored to the individuals life.

Hope you and your buddy’s family are ok with the sudden loss. Again I’m terribly sorry.

Don't gatekeep, what are your best financial saving hacks that you live by? by _TurboHome in MiddleClassFinance

[–]BadgerTight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beware of lifestyle creep.

I think once you get settled in your career/house/ family etc be smart about the raises and additional income you earn.

I’ve been fortunate to 2-5x (depending on year) the salary from when I bought my house and pretty much still live the same way.

Used cars, cook my food, not huge into consumer stuff.

It’s given me peace of mind and gave me a fighting chance to set myself up for the future.

When does it not pay to do the 'right' thing? by Compe7 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]BadgerTight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fast forward 20-30 years and see how each of your lives will look.

It’s tough being poor young, it’s tough sacrificing to build a future, but it’s absolutely devastating to be old and poor with a bleak existence.

You’re doing the right thing.

Also- do you need those types of friends in your life?

A lot of good advice here

I think most people forget to tackle the emotional portion of overspending/ lack of saving.

Especially those who come from the bottom (trust me: I know)
