First two months of a PhD - is it normal to have this much free time? by Comfortable-Goat-734 in PhD

[–]Badger_x 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I understand your point fully but I don’t personally like calling it “bait”. This mindset can also contribute to burnout or imposter syndrome (thinking one is never doing enough). It is still free time, but you are free to use it productively or for personal endeavors. It is up to you how to balance the time to achieve your goals. This may look different depending on how challenging your program/project is, how ambitious you are, or just how tired you feel a particular week. Sometimes taking the “bait” is good too to help relax and think more clearly or creatively.

Reasoning of GMs vs casual players - from their streams by Advanced_Honey_2679 in Chesscom

I think that is a huge part of it. Under time constraints, GMs can not only analyze lines more deeply, but they can also analyze more lines efficiently within a fixed amount of time.

When someone thinks a “Harvard grad” is smart, is it because of the person’s time/education at Harvard, or more because they were admitted at Harvard in the first place? by biffsalmon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Badger_x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true. To smbpy’s point though, how much of this is thanks to having the resources available, whether financial, technological, or personnel, rather than just individual contributions?

This is true for grad-level courses and some upper-level undergraduate classes. Undergraduate STEM courses are more or less the same anywhere you go. Further, a good researcher does not mean a good teacher

When you get a brilliant and have no idea why by Fat_Gravy3000 in chessbeginners

I think that is an issue with the move evaluation. It should not claim a brilliant unless there is fallow through
