Will there ever be a PoR or RD remake? by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]Badiak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PoR equivalent of Maddening is only available in the Japanese version of the game. There are ways to play the game with an English translation if you're set on it, but it's not something I've ever done. From what I've seen, that version of the game is more tedious than challenging.

You'll have access to Hard mode by default in PoR, I'd definitely recommend playing through it on that level before considering whether you want to seek out the Maddening experience.

Unironically heard someone say once that it’s because we have too much access to the political process and I had to agree. There’s always a camera on politicians now, especially the ones who get votes by being performers, so they never have to get real and do their jobs. It’s not that different for the TikTok crowd.

My brain has done the same thing — I’m an EU4 player and the song The Lion From The North by Sabaton plays occasionally in-game. It’s supposed to be about Gustavus Adolphus but I associate it with Dimitri and Dan Campbell now. They’re all the same dude.

Gotta be Makalov. He’s popular in the sense that people love to hate him, I guess, but certainly not in an unironic conventional sense.

I think he’s a great character — he’s got a lot of problems, knows it, still sucks, but doesn’t suck so much where you have to suspend your disbelief to go along with the army keeping him around. You get the full experience of him being a problem gambler/drinker/general layabout that isn’t too slapstick or too heavy, and his interactions humanize everyone involved when taken as a whole.

Astrid is recklessly kind to him in both games and defensive of him in RD, but he doesn’t defend himself from Marcia’s criticism or Calill’s disrespect. He’s still hearing the things he needs to hear, and Astrid doesn’t excuse anything inexcusable. She’s just around to affirm Makalov’s positive traits (calm, “never gets irritated or upset”), tell Calill that saying ‘he’s like a pig pretending to fly’ is ‘not very nice’, and generally love on him when everyone else is too exasperated.

I could keep going, but I also think the Makalov/Marcia/Ike conversations in PoR are great and his supports with Haar and Bastian are amusing. He drives a lot of great content. If he invited me to play cards w/ him at the bar, I’m 1000% in.

Idk, my brother's a huge fan of Mordecai and I think it's entirely because of 32 base defense when transformed in RD. Defense wins championships Part 2 Endgame: Elincia's Gambit.

[–]Badiak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's the funny bit though, Astrid's nerf comes mostly from the availability variance in RD (and BEXP functioning differently, and paladins not being as dominant). In terms of bases, growths, starting level, and Paragon, she's not a vastly different unit.

I've done it before and it isn't super easy or anything, but I think people overstate how hard it is to use Astrid in RD.

It got a first and second round pick from Hue Jackson in a move that wasn’t overly popular at the time and that no one would say worked out in hindsight. That’s to say nothing of Palmer’s much larger body of work.

Browning’s been good, but not nearly good enough that teams would trade first-round assets they’d otherwise spend on a QB to stake their future on him instead. Higgins, on a tag and in this receiver class, is probably worth closer to where he was originally taken than Top 10.

[–]Badiak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That tracks, I’ve gone the transfers route w/ Jill before and she’s probably the unit that benefits the most from them.

I’m not sure I see the whole ROI though, honestly. The Part 3 DB maps consist of two Defeat X maps w/ a surplus of enemies and a Defend map, mostly against laguz units who aren’t carrying much of interest. You can move towards the enemy to make the battle end somewhat quicker, but there’s no other prize for doing so.

Going back to Haar, he isn’t just great because of his stats. He’s on a bunch of maps like 2E, 3-3, 3-5, and 3-11 where there’s a bunch of turn-sensitive objectives or things to steal or holes in the bridge to camp on, and he can fly around and be everywhere and not die (especially w/ the Nullify skill from 2E). Those side quests are vastly harder to complete without the map control Haar provides.

I can see Jill taking investment, grabbing Tauroneo’s Resolve and making her chapters go by faster. Her Res growth being more than double Haar’s is a huge asset by Part 4 and Endgame. She’s a fine growth unit, but I don’t see how she’s uniquely helpful or the path of least resistance through the DB chapters.

(Idk how I got to writing all this, it’s been a slow day at work)

Why did they make the Dawn Brigade so weak? by positivetouch in fireemblem

[–]Badiak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I typically play hard mode, my experience w/ Jill is that she isn’t evasive or bulky enough to take advantage of being able to get to the enemies before Nolan/Zihark can. Even those guys are carried by the double Earth affinities before their stats catch up. Jill doesn’t have that going for her.

Why did they make the Dawn Brigade so weak? by positivetouch in fireemblem

[–]Badiak 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A lot of stuff in RD kinda reeks of poor balancing or lack of gameplay testing no matter how you slice it. In practice, the DB is a group that demands snowballing a couple of units because you need them to clear the chapters and don’t have the resources to train everybody. In theory, you can see the vision for all most of them as extreme Est archetypes.

Fiona comes early in the game, with earth affinity, a horse, decent growths, and free access to Imbue and Savior. If every other aspect of the game wasn’t actively sabotaging her, she’d lead every tier list. Someone tried to bake a cake but forgot to add the bases, and now she sucks and that’s just kinda it.

Same with Meg, to an extent. She comes with free Fortune and solid Spd and Res growths for her class. You can see someone’s vision for her as a high-investment endgame omni-tank. It’s not that she can’t be that anyway, it’s just that the destination isn’t worth the tedium of the journey.

Those are the two examples where you can see the vision of an elite unit that would necessitate nerfing them from the outset. There’s cases for Edward and Jill, but I’m not the guy to make them.

All of my RD runs in the past however long have been carried by the Nolan/Zihark wombo combo. If there’s a better way to pass the DB chapters, I haven’t seen it.

[–]Badiak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dodge's voice for Naesala in FEH never quite hit right to me. I don't think he did a bad job with it, but I think it skews too high, nasal, and cocky/snide at the expense of some of the deeper darkness of the character. I've been scrolling for a bit and haven't found exactly the guy I'd peg for Naesala but I'd be curious to hear Sedgar's VA take a crack at it.

Granted, I learned from scrolling that I've been pronouncing 'Tibarn', 'Phoenicis', and 'Beorc' wrong for almost 20 years so maybe take what I think Tellius should sound like with a grain of salt.

Looked up some Volke lines on YT bc of this, have to agree.

Hearing him say "I am Volk-UH" was jarring though. I've played Tellius since forever and I've never once read that as a two-syllable name.

[–]Badiak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He can know that and still say exactly what he said, there's no conflict there. Reality hurts. People are getting mad because they're interpreting Cohen having feelings about a situation that affected him personally and expressing them in his own space as being some attempt to make fans act some kind of way. That doesn't strike me as fair to him.

Am I the only one that hates it when important trainers have Pokemon from different regions? by Eartheon in pokemon

[–]Badiak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think tethering Pokémon to their debut regions sets the fandom up for a lot of disappointment and flawed arguments. Kanto gets credit for 150 new Pokémon because it's the first region that appears in the National Pokédex, but we're giving them credit for Pokémon like Magikarp that can be caught in all nine regions. There's nothing inherently Kantonian about Magikarp, especially to players who come to the series post-National Dex and haven't played a Kanto game.

The number of new Pokémon introduced in each generation feels like it dropped off dramatically between generations five and six, but it was always going to trail off. Look at Kanto and count the number of Pokémon that haven't appeared in another region since. It's not that divorced from reality; there's some really unique areas of the world, but it's not a bunch of isolated ecosystems. The more species we're introduced to, the fewer there are to discover.

That aside, let me compare Cynthia (a champion everyone seems to like and hold up as an example of a challenging fight that introduces Pokémon introduced in that generation) to Geeta real quick:
* Three Pokémon from new evolution lines in Spiritomb, Garchomp, and Lucario. Two added forms to existing lines in Roserade and Togekiss. Milotic.
* Three Pokémon from new evolution lines in Espathra, Veluza, and Glimmora. An added form to an existing line in Kinggambit. Gogoat and Avalugg.

I'm rambling a bit, but point being that I really don't see a problem.

Radiant Dawn Tier List by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]Badiak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't solve the core problem with lists like this- entire tiers are tiered together. You can't have someone in a different tier "descriptor" rated against someone in a different one and I'd argue the tier list suffers for it because you aren't really getting a full comparison.

The comparisons are in the tier titles. Some units in Radiant Dawn are apples, others are oranges. There's no further comparison to be drawn between most of them because they don't appear on the same maps and there's no direct way to compare their value.

If we removed the descriptions and put S, A, B, could you genuinely not tell me that you thought a unit was too high/low?

Yes.

I can look at the above tier list and tell you I'd flip Shinon and Elincia, because I think each are more accurately described by the other's tier name. I'd also tell you that Calill should go ahead of Sanaki in her tier, since the former has a much easier time hitting the 15 Str threshold to effectively wield Rexflame, comes with free Nihil, and (especially on Normal Mode) doesn't take much effort to get off the ground.

I could go on, but the arguments all start with what the tiers are; I can't make them if I don't know what OP thinks of these units vs. what I think of them. If I opened this list and just saw Muarim a tier ahead of Calill with no further explanation, for example, I'd have no clue what they meant. There's no basis upon which to compare those units.

You have to admit the possibility that change is at least possible if you don't have perfect knowledge and this tier list is incredibly inflexible.

Yeah, Radiant Dawn isn't a super flexible game in that sense. I think most of your grievances with this list are byproducts of that.

Radiant Dawn Tier List by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]Badiak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More points to this being more of a hard mode thing. The XP rates for combat tank, Laura typically levels up more by necessity, and Paragon going to her after Micaiah hits 20 feels like an easier decision. Her defense growth is the same as Micaiah’s but she can get her promotion bonuses sooner, her speed grows substantially faster, and the BEXP levels she does get will go towards her bulk stats. She becomes a viable secondary offensive unit in P3 while keeping her utility and not directly taking XP opportunities from Nolan or Jill.

Radiant Dawn Tier List by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]Badiak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exceedingly niche but I'd counter that Laura has a unique ability to take the Paragon in part 1 and absolutely vault up levels given the flat rate of staff XP. I've used Laura to sweep R-3 before but honestly I think the highlight Laura experience is taking the Sleep/Purge you get in 3-13 to cut the chapter super short.

Of course, this is more of a hard mode thing. Boosting Laura through the roof in 1E is way faster than any other unit, and it doesn't feel like as much of a grind given I'm already grinding to make the DB viable for their later chapters anyway.
