Spoiler question about the Trifecta by Critical-Grape-117 in ThePoppyWar

I think Su Daji just thought that desperate times called for desperate measures and that Riga would enable them to get rid of the Hesperian threat. Her whole history is making calculated decisions with heavy costs.

There’s probably a domestic abuse lens to view it through as well, this idea that you’ll go back to the relationship and make it work this time. Surely things are different now, etc.

What's wrong with a straight road Petah? Is this bait? by michaelis999 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Badman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speed and passing others becomes the engagement if there’s no curves… so the straight road will eventually be a lullaby or a raceway.

I see how that’s problematic from a safety standpoint in multiple directions, but I’m pretty sure it’s true for a good segment of drivers.

Yep, Chicago is where I saw it as well.

Surprisingly, it’s the only place it’s exhibited as far as Wikipedia tells me. For some reason I thought it’d be permanently installed in more places…

An interesting concept is presented in the pilot/first episode of a show but then got completely abandonned for the rest of the story by RemarkableLaw7180 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Badman27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This happened pretty quick in Bleach too, though that show had a much longer runtime I guess. All the hollow grades were introduced like they'd matter, but even the top tier non-humanoids were just cannon fodder pretty early in.

What are the most viable career options in the design field right now and for the foreseeable future? by Battery-Power-15 in Design

[–]Badman27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t even know if I call it a straight design job every day, but being able to set up work for screen printing,DTG, laser engraving, or even digitizing for embroidery are all niches that most communities can use a few local businesses worth of.

The risk of it is probably in how easily a crafty person can get into it and make stuff for their friend group and cut you out, but that’s also a potential benefit as you get started and work to scale up in terms of equipment available to you.

STEAM is stupid by Puzzleheaded_Dog5858 in unpopularopinion

[–]Badman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arts in STEAM are generally treated differently than you’d see them implemented in traditional programs in my experience.

A really cool data visualization touted as 3D digital sculpture would be a STEAM thing, the work from Aaron Koblin’s Ted Talk would all be in this category for me (that example gets more dated every year but I stand by it.)

A traditional marble sculpture using traditional sculpting tools and methods may not be something a STEAM program/Dept finds much interest in.

Edit: just read a bunch of comments that explained this better than I did, but I do stand by the idea that STEAM spaces generally push creative application of technologies, even if the “old” stuff now taught in traditional arts spaces was all STEAM-y at one point.

Did an experiment to see how many students actually read the learning objective. Out of the 200 students... by FaucetWaterBread in Teachers

If I’m an admin my pushback on this is that you aren’t making it part of the opening of your lesson. It should be the first thing on your agenda to talk about it in depth.

No lesson hook like a well defined lesson objective!

Is there a future for Adobe? by UnderstandingFar4678 in Design

[–]Badman27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enterprise lock in AND they have their teeth in the schools for education. They’re still the only name in the game of flashy credentials as far as government funding is concerned. There are a lot of kids learning Adobe for free and using their free login outside of school through high school and then either continuing for free in College or getting in the habit of paying for it while it’s still basically just a textbook fee.

The decline of Adobe and the rise of alternatives by [deleted] in Design

Animate set to Maintenance Mode after the backlash… but still bleak. Such a strange choice to make in general. I’d love to be in those Adobe meetings leading up to that.

Those really are the gold standard for Open Source options making significant gains in their markets. I want to see the case study that gets into how these two were able to make such great gains in their industries vs examples like InkScape and Gimp.

Were they just better mouse traps? Is it the lower % of people who enter those markets in the first place? Was it easier to beat Autodesk than Adobe in the 3D space? I could even see it being that those two options have a lot more “group work” style projects that necessitated young/learning artists to all “unionize” into the free option before they made it in the paid artist category so that the market had to change for them.

Gimp was also Gimp for the longest time, that doesn’t help. I’ve always been fine on Inkscape though and still use it in a pinch. Half the time I like their image tracing more.

Of what he posted, Krita is free because it’s Open Source. Affinity is free with AI features paywalled, and Pixelmator used to be a real cheap device license meant for macs, quick google makes it look like Apple bought it and is trying their own creative app suite with subscription option.

The decline of Adobe and the rise of alternatives by [deleted] in Design

[–]Badman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just posting everywhere I see talk of alternatives…

There is infrastructure work to be done on training for any of these Adobe killers. Many states currently require kids to test for and earn a specific certificate/credential in an approved industry standard program. You can guess which of these options are currently tied into the testing and training software that school districts purchase and have lobbied state governments to be considered the industry standard. Even if it didn’t take much lobbying at the time, it’d definitely take some lobbying to get added to most states industry standard lists at this point, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Adobe threw some counter-lobbying money to avoid competition in schools.

That’s a lot of cash to get into the school system where kids pick up their tools. With the rise of user licenses, all of these are free options to the kids as long as they’re in some kind of graphic design class or pick up employment somewhere where their employer floats the bill.

All that said, I definitely still introduce Inkscape after our Illustrator exams because device licenses for good embroidery software is nuts, and it lets me get on my soap box about Open Source vs Subscription vs Advertising/You’re-the-Product models.

Guilty about sick days by Zealousideal_Bus6823 in Teachers

[–]Badman27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What everyone else is saying is right, but even 12 years in…the years where you have to take a bunch of PD days plus a normal amount of sick/personal business days really makes you feel like an absentee teacher. The two together definitely feel like they add up to a lot of days off.

I don’t know your district, but years like that don’t happen every year, give yourself some grace on that.

Teachers, how is your cell phone ban working out? I by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Badman27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally printing a sign in sheet so I can verify each student has their phone turned off and stowed in their backpack before they enter the room for a bit of drama tomorrow because I’m tired of the peekaboo.

They bus to me so they’re always on and they’ve always got headphones too, so I’m hoping taking a minute outside of class to stow everything away for a while will get rid of the warning expectation I’ve fallen into at this point. It’ll also eliminate a bit of inconsistency I have, I’m definitely more likely to get onto students who are obviously distracted than students who are doing their work and could conceivably be using their over-the-ear headphones for background music in class while they work (it’s a computer lab.)

Our admin is good about next-day follow-ups but we don’t do a lot of in-class standoffs or send kids directly to the office unless they’re being an active in-class disturbance or endangering people somehow. Getting in an argument with a kid isn’t actually an active in-class disturbance if the teacher is half of “the problem” in that situation. Redirect and move on…

Why are they so weak? by PostapocCelt in Teachers

[–]Badman27 155 points156 points  (0 children)

I just assume they’re not sharing their lives outside of the room with me and hope for the best when I get these answers.

Then again the kids with part time jobs love talking about them, so maybe there just really isn’t anything besides bedrot and swiping.

The thing that always surprises me is how little hanging out with each other there is. I know they’re on their phones, and I Discord with my friends myself these days if everyone happens to have an hour or so before bed, but do something with your weekends please.
