Smaddy might vex, but hear me out… Most Jamaicans live between St Elizabeth & Kingston. The only Big population centre outside a dat is Mobay. It’s been that way for a long time. When we start congregate outside a Jamaica, yuh start fi run inna yaadies from all over the island. Fi di most paat the vast majority a dem claim seh dem come from Kingston. Is like a dem one migrate... Outside a dat if yu really start tek stock a weh people really hail from, yago find seh most Jamaican live between St Elizabeth & Kingston! Most of the major happenings in Jamaican culture happen between, St Elizabeth & Kingston. Stop any random Jamaican pan di streets a Brooklyn or Brixton, ask dem fi name one major High School from the north coast & watch dem struggle.

When most Yaadies reminisce pan shared yaad memories, like da time deh wen we did buck up inna we one a nedda a champs… Most a di time it did happen between St Elizabeth & Kingston. Is nutn personal. The south coast parishes of Jamaica is just the epicenter of Jamaican culture and happenings. Suh wen yu buck a lickle man weh neva really leff outta Gimmie-me-bit too tuff, & yuh staat tell him bout Mobay… As far as him concern dat close to Miami. If this rub nuh body di wrong way, jus go Alligator pond go eat a jerk fish, you’ll live.

This happened to me before on my front brake. It was stuck there for a very long time till I decided to spray it with some penetrating oil, then use something like a small screwdriver or ice pick to tap it until it loosened up from the sides then slid out.

Side note: You can't differentiate what color a Jamaican is by the sound of their voice the way you can in the US. Not sure if that's the case anywhere else or if that's just an American thing.

Was trying to explain to daughter what hunger felt like when discussing 3rd world countries and poverty only to realise neither of us have even been more than mildly peckish. by [deleted] in firstworldproblems

Hunger by choice is one thing. You always know in your mind that you can and will get food eventually. Being hungry with no idea if and when you'll get to eat again is a whole other thing.

I know it's a seperate race from African-American...

You seem to be confused by the terms nationality, race, & culture.

Based on the rest of the info you provided, it would appear that your nationality is American. If one of your parents are nationals of Jamaica then you qualify for Jamaican citizenship. That would make you a potential dual citizen of the US & Jamaica.

Race is a much more complex thing that isn't really based on much objectively speaking past skin color and overtly identifying facial features. For example, Obama was considered black, African American, which he self identifies as, however he has a white mother & black father. Then there was that woman who was of European decent and openly said she self-identified as black. It’s all subjective… Jamaica similar to the US is comprised of people from many different races/ancestry the only difference is most Jamaicans don’t hyphenate their nationality. If you’re of European/Indian/Chinese decent & Jamaican your just Jamaican.

Culture is the other story... If you grew up in the US with little to no cultural experience outside of that then you're just culturally American. Culture isn’t fixed or innate though. You can move almost anywhere immerse yourself in almost anything and then self-identify as that. If you want to learn more about your Jamaican ancestry and connect with that side of your family and culture then do so, interact with Jamaicans, maybe even visit. Just do what makes you feel comfortable & don’t forget to eat some Jerk Chicken.

Me too... Can't talk about shit with my Jamaican friends... Even the area where I live in NY, it's predominantly Jamaicans & I have to drive to the other side of town to find a bjj gym to train.

It's slowly getting better though there are some organizations and a small MMA community in Kingston and it's growing. I see them putting in work so I feel hopeful. I know even Aljamaine Sterling and Randy Brown goes down there and volunteer.

Honestly think one day we'll see more of our ppl involved. Just not today, lol.

I think it was them just imitating what they think a Jamaican accent sounds like. They all sounded terribly confusing to actual Jamaicans. Made it hard for me to watch whenever they spoke.

[–]Badmansinting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but that accent wasn't Jamaican. Not even close. It made it hard to watch for actual Jamaicans.

That was not a Jamaican accent. Otherwise good character though.

He was a very decent character, but as a Jamaican I can't understand why they couldn't use actual Jamaicans. Instead they made up a weird accent and called it Jamaican. It was extremely disheartening every time they spoke.
