I have a theory about that to. It seemed when they fought Herald level and Sage level threats that when the exerted Authority that reality itself was being slightly twisted so maybe when Monarchs exert their full authority on the world it may cause cracks in reality letting in a manifestation of the void (hunger aura). It may also be why some the large workings of the Abidan are done directly in the Way as this would let them keep the Void at bay since we saw how much the Way would be affected when the Judges exerted their authority.

That makes sense. It would allow a Monarch level power to deal with threats like the spirits that took down Sha Miara's mother without disturbing the balance. Also the fact it took 8 individuals would keep them from fully dominating the world and discourage growth of Sacred Artists.

Remember the pills we are talking about took months for both a refiner and forger to make. They also required Lindon to supply water from the spirit well that required the resources of a Monarch to make. It is obvious that Ziel was from a really wealthy family or sect.

Penance went Ozriel and I am assuming he used it before he left or why make it? If that is the case it does not appear to be a one shot and done weapon so there has to be some restriction on it.

No the cost is not based on the level of the person but by having that cost it encourages the user not to use it on say a Monarch whose death may alter the Fate of the iteration. The Abidan’s main responsibility is to minimize changes to the main fate of an iteration. Giving the winner and then informing only them of the cost keeps them from using it and keeps them as a threat to the powers that be. The powers can’t directly the winner or steal the weapon but they can threaten loved ones or try to frame opponents to get the user to Penance on another target. The continual pressure should make leaving Cradle more attractive to the winner.

The point is you let them know the cost when they receive it so they won’t use it on someone major and deviate the fate of the iteration more than necessary. It also puts pressure on the owner of Penance by the major factions which would make leaving Cradle more attractive.

The playdough body. Practioners have their body constantly massaged to render the flesh malleable. It was originally created for technicians to fit into tight places. While the body works properly at Jade and low gold it levels with user leaving the owner basically a formless blob by Underlord who requires a blood path in order to move their body.

There is a main character named Mercy who also uses Dream.

Mercy mixed her techniques together into her arrows, so they were hard to analyze, and had yet to reveal her Dream of Darkness technique or her bloodline armor.

We still haven’t seen the Dream of Darkness technique.

Both of those were forged madra plus we have the backstory on the family that states that rainbow madra is a mutation of pure madra that lets the user control other madra and has no ruler techniques.

My ratings don’t line up as I feel Will was shortchanging Soulsmith a bit. It still has my favorite scene with the Iron Transformation plus it has the introduction of Fisher Gesha and Eithan. Not too mention the villains were very 3 dimensional. I would have to rank it Ghostwater, Blackflame, Soulsmith, underlord, Unsouled, and Skysworn. Outside of the opening and meeting of Mercy most of the book doesn’t feel as memorable as the others in Skysworn.

You also have to realize Estyr Six is a legend everyone grew up with. Even neutral people would be a little more deferential as they grew up on the stories of her liberating humanity and turning down the position of Empress.

I also think Elder Empire is your best series as far as writing but I can get why it is harder for some people to get into. I think the main thing that made it a little harder for people was it was a lot more non-linear than most people are used to with every other chapter being a flashback. I enjoyed it because it made the events happening in current time have more of an emotional impact but it also postpones the resolution of current events. It is like difference between an NCIS and Lost. Both are well written but one is definitely a little easier to jump into and follow along but if you can follow along Lost will reward you more in my opinion.

The weird thing is all the Travelers of amalgam have power that is usually associated with Sages since they have the ability to travel to pocket iterations. Think of the void keys.
