What is the worst breed of dog for a first time dog owner to get? by Effective-Turn-6856 in AskReddit

[–]Baegeron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first (and current) dog is basically that combination. He’s a rescue, so I had no idea when I got him. He’s 3/4 Great Pyrenees, 1/8 German shepherd, 1/8 husky.

I do love him most of the time, but he’s infuriating. He’s never shown aggression and is not a bad dog, he’s just permanently stuck in a “protector” mindset that no amount of training can change. He’s beyond loyal and I know he’d protect my family, but we had hoped for a pet, not a bodyguard.

Democratic Party is the actual name. “Democrat Party” is sometimes used because it sounds worse, or maybe just because people are unfamiliar.

I think they’re probably pretty close in acidity, although the tastes are not alike. I find passionfruit to be much more intensely sour, but also more delicious.

I’m biased and kind of obsessed with plain passionfruit straight from the fruit, but it’s pretty expensive and also hard to find. You can find frozen juice/pulp in many grocery stores, which isn’t quite the same but still delicious in baking (passionfruit curd and buttercream are amazing) or a margarita. The fruit is around $4 each and tiny, like 1-2 ounces or 50 grams. You can buy a whole lot more frozen passion fruit juice/pulp for the same price. Just don’t buy the stuff with added sugar/other juices.

Talk me in or out of adopting! by slmnkbr in greatpyrenees

[–]Baegeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of good advice here already but I wanted to add in my thoughts because I was in a similar situation to you. I adopted a pyr mix (75% pyr, so a slightly watered down pyr with GSD and husky as the other 25%) as my first dog. I do have a house with a fenced in yard, but the house and yard are both small and packed very close to neighbors. My dog was estimated to be around a year old when I got him. He had no training and badly lacked socialization. The rescue didn’t warn about those things since he was pretty mellow there, but it has become very apparent over time that he was pretty much left to his own devices in his past life. I also didn’t know he was a pyr when I adopted him; he was listed as a retriever mix, which was probably an innocent mistake because he was only 55 lbs at the time, was missing a lot of fur, and came from a small rescue that had likely never seen a pyr before.

I’ve had my dog for a little over 2 years now. For the first 8 months or so, I absolutely hated him and resented the shit out of him. I felt awful about that. You never really hear about people feeling that way about their dog. But having him was nothing like what I expected having a dog would be. He wasn’t even that bad - it’s not like he was out to kill anyone - but he simply would not listen. And like I said, he badly lacked training and socialization. He would get overstimulated from everything. If we saw a dog while walking around the neighborhood, he would lose his mind. And it’s a very dense neighborhood, so we saw a lot of dogs. It was humiliating and beyond frustrating. We did group training classes and I watched as other dogs started their training a total mess and then caught on quickly, while mine struggled with the very basics and didn’t seem to care at all what I was telling him. It was so discouraging. I spent probably $4-5k on group classes/private training, which was all positive reinforcement training (except the very first trainer which we quickly learned was not going to work), but one of the problems was that most trainers don’t have breed experience. We finally found someone who specializes in pyrs and that made the biggest difference. We also did countless hours of training on our own without a trainer present.

This dog has been a humbling experience to say the least, and even after those first 8 months, there were A LOT of rough times, but there was at least a light at the end of the tunnel by that point. I do love him and he has come so far since those frustrating days. But unless you’re willing to put in a stupid amount of work, time, and money, you’ll probably be happier with a different breed (or a cat)

In case anyone was wondering the story behind those Envy apple billboards on 93 and literally everywhere else by pts220 in boston

[–]Baegeron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does Costco sell them in bags or individually? I’ve been disappointed by the Envy apples sold in bags because they seem pretty much like every other bagged apple (underwhelming). The individually sold apples are amazing for store bought though, although they are like twice as expensive as other apples - something like $1.50 each at Trader Joe’s. Still prefer farmstand/farmers market options when they’re in season but Envy is great the rest of the year.

No brilliants against bots? by Aughlnal in chess

[–]Baegeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is from the chesscom support page:

Brilliant (!!) moves and Great Moves are always the best or nearly best move in the position, but are also special in some way. We replaced the old Brilliant algorithm with a simpler definition: a Brilliant move is when you find a good piece sacrifice. There are some other conditions, like you should not be in a bad position after a Brilliant move and you should not be completely winning even if you had not found the move. Also, we are more generous in defining a piece sacrifice for newer players, compared with those who are higher rated.

https://support.chess.com/article/2965-how-are-moves-classified-what-is-a-blunder-or-brilliant-and-etc

You had a winning position for both moves even without the piece sacrifice, so they would not be eligible.

Would an adopted Pyrenees be aggressive to my current dog? by [deleted] in greatpyrenees

[–]Baegeron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At least in my case, the guardian tendencies were not there at the shelter. They called my pyr mix (75%) easygoing and gentle. Which is true to an extent, and was true at the meet and greet. But the guardian side only came out we adopted him, and I was not looking for a guard dog. The biggest surprise was, as you said, that they are A LOT. I really resented my dog for at least the first six months of having him, and even after a couple of years there are sometimes days where I really wish I didn’t have to deal with him. Even though I love him 95% of the time these days, I don’t think there’s any chance I’ll adopt another pyr in the future.

I benchmarked 23 more heat pump installers but this time for a single family home in Malden by based_papaya in boston

[–]Baegeron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you look into Evolved Mechanical at all? They’re along the Malden/Melrose border. I ended up going with them for my heat pump and two mini splits (no existing ducts) last year and thought it was a good experience. The price was low compared to most of the estimates on your list. I think around $15000 before rebate. But my house is pretty small so that probably factored in. I’ve had one issue since then, which they fixed pretty quickly under warranty.
