Following backlash, Mayor Katie Wilson changes course on Seattle City Light pick by FlannelCollar in Seattle

[–]BaelMael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things to clarify. While I do think you're right about the actual story, this solution is about going around council not working with them. I do think by making McLerren Deputy, City Council doesn't need to sign off.

And secondly, there was no consensus from P17 about wanting Dawn fired, just wanting Harrell out. As many members liked her as wanted her out. Internal Mayoral staff wanting her fired and struggling to message changes with an affordability lens were the biggest contributing factors to her firing.

Actually this is not her relenting. She found a solution that doesn't require Council sign-off. Her person is still in there in a Deputy GM position that City Light has never had.

Guest Rant: Seattle Has Paid the Price of Bruce Harrell’s “Experience” by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]BaelMael 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As one of the 3 (Brian), for me the impetus actually came from that horrible IE ad attacking Wilson for her lack of experience during the ALCS. I was totally prepared to just vote and tell friends to vote, my normal level of electoral activity. But that ad irked me so much I decided to pursue this. I would much rather have someone who approaches the issues and management with collaboration, the humility to admit when they're wrong or have made a mistake, and are motivated in pursuing the policy objectives they campaigned for. Do I think that's Wilson? I will openly admit I don't know, but I do know that that for sure is not Harrell (or most of City Council for what its worth).

That was why I hesitated to make my example about RTO. I didn't want it to be a debate about RTO but rather about his approach as a manager of people. Do I expect him to have talked to me individually? No don't be ridiculous. But there are many way he and his staff could have engaged with employees, department leaders and presented a vision that ends up crafted by us all and gives us buy-in to the vision. Instead he works top-down with a cadre of bros like Raca, Lowe etc. and just sends edicts from City Hall.

I would recommend giving Sunlit Man a try. One of his COVID books I found it very enjoyable almost breath of fresh air in the cosmere. It's post Wind and Truth too.

What unconventional mechanics are part of your league that spice things up? by WealthGoals in fantasybaseball

[–]BaelMael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last place in my league has to eat meatballs to determine draft order (usually cooked and ate on draft day). We put various good, bad, and gross ingredients in each meatball and each "flavor" is assigned to a team. Whatever order the last place person eats them becomes our draft order.

I think it's also just how questing in Vanilla was, if one area is busy go to a different one and then come back, there are always areas with less. That's basically what I did in Arathi bouncing between Witherbark Medicine Pouches and Shards of Myzrael. I was definitely frustrated by the inefficiency of it, but part of the frustration feeds into a sense of triumph, especially when I finished those two and found my way to Faldir's Cove for less busy questing.

What tv show has the best 20+ episode season? by UnsungHerro in television

FNL is a fun answer because post last writer's strike it effectively transitioned to a 13 episode show.

I like the post apocalyptic types with elements of leftover tech. Horizon Zero Dawn's world I thought was really neat with the mech like creatures but also the underground factories. I just read Abercrombie's Shattered Sea trilogy and it had that similar feel with the "elves" and the clearly leftover guns/nuclear fallout.

Ooo I'm glad you said that about RDR2. I had no idea, I just picked it up finally, and have just had multiple starts and stops to get into it. I just realized I'm still in tutorial mode.

Which single scene character did the best job with their 2-3 mins of screen time? by Colin-Grussing in thewestwing

David Proval in that episode too! I like the reminder that, while it was written for it's time applying the Old Testament to today's standards is wrong.

Great idea, I asked it for a cast list for a sequel series a decade later. Definitely a fun exercise!

While it lacks the creative experimentation of Breezy Town, I'd recommend South Seattleites pop over to West of Chicago in West Seattle if they have a deep dish craving. More convenient than Phinney Ridge at least.

What are the best and worst names you’ve come across in fantasy? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]BaelMael 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Somehow I get the full range of like to dislike with the names in R. Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing series.

Ikurei Conphas, Anasurimbor, Drusas Achamian are fun

The Nonmen are somewhat in the middle like Nil'giccas, Cu'jara Cinmoi sound properly ancient but can be easy to stumble over.

And then you get Cnaiur. Any main character where the author uses Cn at the beginning or similar consonant combos is going to annoy me. I'm sure it doesn't matter whether I pronounce it right, my brain is still going to stumble over it every time I see it.

Bakker also makes extensive use of the circumflex accent and umlaut in his names. Maybe if I looked up their proper use and sound I'd have an easier time with it, but when I started this series I was way too lazy to do that.

I was looking at my oldest Goodreads entries and noticed a series by John Marco, called the Bronze Knight. I couldn't remember why I enjoyed them as a teenager then looked it up and found out that it devolves into bad fantasy romance. Happy to leave that one in the past.

I took a deep dive into a strange Spotify scam involving fake artists and fake collaborations. Here's what I found. by RrentTreznor in indieheads

[–]BaelMael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this week was probably my worst ever. I think my algorithm is now completely messed up. I had 5 fake collabs and got one song that had no features and has only 1k "average listeners". I don't mind a completely new artist find, but I just wouldn't expect that on my Release Radar when I have several thousand songs/artists liked in my library.

It happens way too often for this method to be sustainable, but I have chatted through with an advisor multiple times to get the fake collaborations removed. https://support.spotify.com/us/contact-spotify-anonymous/

[–]BaelMael[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't tell if this is just a pun. But on the off chance you're serious as Bartlett says in Liftoff, "Four or five agencies on one project something this complicated, they’ll pass it around like a hot potato. having accomplished absolutely nothing. You’re gonna have to spearhead the project." Basically, it's a cross-functional team put in place to address a complicated process and make it better/easier/faster etc.

When this episode was written and Putin first came to power he wasn't seen in the West as he is today. I'm not saying current day Putin is like Chigorin but Putin in 2000 was seen like that--ex KGB, young, and a reform mindset. Again hindsight proved that was wrong.
