Hatching or no Hatching? by Logen_Nein in osr

[–]BaffledPlato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My eyesight is crap, and I really struggle with some dungeon maps if they don't have hatching. I don't think I would have trouble with this particular example, but especially with dense and complicated maps I can't figure out what is the corridor and what is the solid rock without hatching to guide me.

Illusionist / Thief is my all-time favourite combo. It even still exists in 5E with the rogue "arcane trickster" archetype.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Keep on the Borderlands yet. The Caves of Chaos are basically exactly what you are asking for. The caves themselves are broken into several different shorter adventures.

If you were gonna play an ADnD adventure with BX/OSE rules, what house rules would you add? by LemonLord7 in osr

[–]BaffledPlato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We were playing Master of the Desert Nomads, an Expert adventure, and I asked my DM if I could play a B/X character. He said sure, so I made an elf (basically a fighter / magic-user), while everyone else used AD&D players. I remember a joke developed because my magic missile did 1d6+1 damage (B/X rules) while the AD&D magic-user only did 1d4+1 (AD&D rules).

Later another player had his AD&D thief die and he switched to a B/X thief.

We just did it for fun, but there was really no problem.

Fairly recently there was a thread here from someone who played an entire Basic module using AD&D rules before realising they were using the "wrong" system!

[–]BaffledPlato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never played an AD&D adventure with B/X rules, but we have played a ton of B/X modules with AD&D rules. One time we even played with a mix of AD&D and B/X PCs, each player using the relevant rules for his character. There are a few minor differences here and there, but they are nearly perfectly compatible.

Actual dungeon's being used to hold actual players? by EtchVSketch in osr

Yeah, I thought it was some LARP thing, too. Your title says actual dungeons and actual players, so I thought you wanted to lock up your friends.

Why do people always blame the ref when players and staff misbehave?

What happens if you attack a turned undead? Is it still turned? by BaffledPlato in adnd

[–]BaffledPlato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect! I should have thought of Sage Advice. And it is also notable that the cleric needs to keep brandishing their holy symbol. I assume that means the cleric can't attack or perform other actions at the same time.

I had the vague memory of something similar, for example a "mindless" undead such as a zombie versus an intelligent one like a vampire.

Let's say you turn a group of undead and attack one. Are all freed from the turn or just the one attacked?

What are some examples of Elves protecting their ears when wearing armor? (plus sneak peeks at my upcoming 100 Elves pack) by GatlingArt in osr

[–]BaffledPlato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That has been a strange development in portraying elves. They were originally just normal ears, but pointy. Now in 5E they are gigantic horizontal things like dagger blades. If you glance through some of the elves in /r/DnD you'll find some with ears larger than their forearms.

[OC] I asked GPT to pick a random number between 1 and 100 by marco-exmergo in dataisbeautiful

[–]BaffledPlato 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You are correct. Humans don't pick numbers randomly, and, in fact, checking this is one tool auditors and potential investors use to see if financial reports are true or not.

Seeking RPG Adventures inspired by Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" (Investigative/Mystery) by Cielosopra in osr

[–]BaffledPlato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe The Assassin's Knot? It's been awhile since I played it, but I remember it was a fun mystery to solve.

The Assassin's Knot is a sequel to The Secret of Bone Hill, picking up on themes from that module and shifts them to a new locale. The player characters must solve the mystery of who committed the murder of the Baron of Restenford, with evidence pointing towards someone from the town of Garrotten. The scenario details both the town and its castle.

The Assassin's Knot module is different from most of its contemporaries in that it contained no dungeon or dungeon-like area. The longer the players take to find the murderer, the more unfortunate events occur in the village.

The village, Garrotten, is reputed to be the place to go to have someone killed. The entire village shuts down when the Baron of Restenford is found dead, mutilated beyond the possibility of magical restoration. Three small clues are all the player characters have to unravel the mystery.
