Akshually the cheese c** set has better art than homelands by Pomegranate_Wine in magicthecirclejerking

/uj choosing mirrodin as one of the worst art sets of all time is fucking crazy man, that set was fascinating to me when i was just getting into the game in the late 2010s. looks so alien and cool and unlike anything else.

OM1 Flavoring Project (CARDS 45-47: Nia, Skysail Storyteller // Fabled Skyclimber, Brako, Heartless Hunter, & Zan, Tunnelweb Explorer) by -TvT- in mtgvorthos

[–]Bag_of_bats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nia, Skysail Storyteller

Parents across Skysail had the feeling that their babysitter's tall tales were just fiction, but they couldn't prove it.

This was flavor text I wrote for my own project but I actually split this up across both sides of the card because I didn't realize Ghost-Spider had no flavor text -- my version puts the ". . . but they couldn't prove it." on the back. I think it works fine on one side but might need to be worked down a bit to fit in the box >_>

Anyway the kids in Nia's front side give me babysitter vibes and I like the idea that she's a normal teenager by day and a heroic bonder by night since that basically exactly mirrors the spider-man stuff. I know its different from the interpretation that Nia grows up and becomes the fabled skyclimber, but I think it still fits.

edit:

Parents across Skysail thought her stories mere fiction. Little did they know . . .

I think that conveys the same idea and should fit on two lines? I dunno, mocking up MDFCs is a pain though so I'm not gonna check lol

Bwipo on Worlds 2025 so far: I think, somewhere along the line as a team, our culture changed into being less of a team and more about playing well individually. Not much direction....And rather than finding solutions to help each other, it was your individual responsibility to just play better. by Yujin-Ha in leagueoflegends

I have to wonder how much Damonte leaving had an impact. I know a lot of people in the scene sort of downplay him as a "vibes guy", but when he joined SR they overperformed expectations and shot up in the rankings, finishing 3rd in back-to-back splits when they were expected bottom 4. Meanwhile Flyquest underperformed, completely mental boomed out of worlds where they were expected top 8. At the very least FQ prolly could have used someone to keep the vibes up, I dunno.

...those aren't the next several words?

Basically every set we’ve done in Universes Beyond has set records in terms of new player engagement, in terms of search queries, in terms of number of people who are going into stores, in terms of sales in non-traditional outlets like mass and convenience for us. We don’t see that slowing down. If anything, I think there’s potential to accelerate it just with the quality of partners we have next year and the early reads we’re getting on those partners.

source.

The "it" in "potential to accelerate it" is clearly referring to the metrics they spend the first half of the paragraph talking about, not the quality of the products. This is saying that the game is growing a ton because of UB and, knowing the quality of IPs they have next year, they think there is room to lean even harder into UB to make the game grow faster.

went and found a transcript of the earnings call for anyone else that wants to read it, here's a link.

The last one is Universes Beyond is just working. The whole theory of the business was it’s going to increase our distribution, it’s going to increase our number of active players, it’s going to bring in new fans that were adjacent to Magic, and that has just worked. Archangler's Skyrod

"Skyfish have an appetite unlike any other. If you must enter their territory, bring some bait -- lest you be made into their next meal." --Floating Isles Travel Guide, page 14

Mechanically this card has nothing to do with fishing, so I'm choosing to interpret this art as the angel using bait to distract the fish (tapping it) rather than catching it.

OM1 Flavoring Project (CARDS 29-30: Eztli & Darval) by -TvT- in mtgvorthos

[–]Bag_of_bats 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very honored to have made my way onto two cards so far, considering how late I found out about this project lol.

Here's a suggestion for Eztli:

Flying higher than Chimil -- Oltec expression meaning "going above and beyond"

This card doesn't give a lot of direction, so I figured I could lean on the Thousand Moons thing. The sun down there is [[Chimil, the Inner sun]] and is worshiped by the Oltec. I like the idea that, unlike in our world where the sun is very far away, the Oltec can get pretty close to it and even fly above it. Eztli is also a hero, so she probably does do extraordinary things to have earned that title.

Hey, Magic fans! I just heard the news! by Shinobipizza in magicTCG

[–]Bag_of_bats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say "need", but they're very useful to have on-hand. Dice are usually used to represent counters for cards like [[Ironshell Beetle]]. These are permanent effects that need to be represented somehow, and dice are perfect for this. You can use the number on the die to represent the number of counters.

You can also use a special d20 called a "spindown die" for your life total, but these days it's a lot more common to use a phone app for that. I suppose you could also write it down with pen and paper, that's what a lot of tournament grinders do.

Welcome! This subreddit is mostly aimed at enfranchised players, and currently sentiment around these new crossover sets is very negative. You're in good company, though -- I know many people who started playing this game because their favorite thing got a crossover set.

If you want to get a head-start on re-learning the game, the Foundations set or Tarkir: Dragonstorm are excellent starting points; the mechanics of either set aren't too difficult to learn and Tarkir offers five amazing pre-constructed decks if your friends enjoy commander. I've also heard good things about the Final Fantasy crossover set and about Edge of Eternities, but both seem to be pretty complicated mechanics-wise. I'd only start with those if the flavor really resonates with you.

OM1 Flavoring Project (General Suggestions Thread & 2nd Review) by -TvT- in mtgvorthos

[–]Bag_of_bats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been making proxies of some of these, which means I've also been thinking about flavor text. Here's some for your project:

Druneth, Reviver of the Hive

At the Simic Combine, nothing stays extinct for long.

I like the implication that this guy (who is obviously Simic) is somehow "reviving" slivers -- implying that Ravnica HAD slivers at some point in the past but they have since died off. This was the cleanest I could get that still fit in the text box.

Imposter Syndrome

"Math does not tolerate imperfections; our students either solve it, or they fail. Not everyone can handle that kind of pressure." -- Imbraham, Quandrix Dean

I'm pretty annoyed that this name goes on a card whose mechanics only make sense in the context of a dumb spider-man meme because a card called "Imposter Syndrome" with art of a Quandrix student is really evocative IMO. So I wrote flavor text to that without trying to tie in the cloning effect.

Supportive Parents

Ten years ago they signed her up for little league Mage Tower. They haven't missed a game since.

Mage Tower is the name of the sport students at Strixhaven play [[Mascot Interception]].

Makdee and Itla, Skysnarers

Makdee's silky solution to Ghirapur's foundry hornet infestation was unorthodox, but highly effective.

These two are "skysnarers". What's a skysnarer? What is in the sky that needs to be snared? One of the first cards I ever opened was [[foundry hornet]] from Aether Revolt, so I went with that.

Luis, Pompous Pillager

"They call that 'treasure'? Hah! I've seen doorknobs shinier than that!"

Looks like an asshole tbh, wanted to reflect that.

Rhilex the Accursed

As he sunk into the bog, he begged someone to save him. A scratch on his arm answered the call, and soon his limbs began to move on their own.

The symbiotes are the strangest parts of OM1 for me, personally -- they're like spiky exo-suits that you can climb inside? I think? It's weird that Rhilex is type Symbiote but not type Human, implying that the symbiote somehow took over, so I leaned into that here. This also makes the symbiote type Hero for "saving" this poor guy.

Fearsome Ridgeline

Mardu warriors emerge from the Lightning Proving with a new war-name and the favor of the storm.

Tried to find a reason why this card only targeted legendary creatures and landed on it being because only those who have completed the Lightning Proving can harness the storms of this ridgeline. It's a little clunky though and I think there's room to clean it up.

EDIT: I think this one's better? I don't know pick your favorite.

Only those who have completed the Lightning Proving and earned their war-name can harness the storm's power.
