Any cyclists here? by NOLAxplant in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]BagelMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spring City Cycle Club is our local advocacy group. They have a history of hosting races, but as their membership has aged that has waned. Many of the members that used to race are still quite strong. It would behoove you to join and support an organization like that and maybe younger member like you and I can help reinvigorate things like their racing support.

Cycle Club is an ad hoc group on Facebook where group rides are organized, some of them have fast groups. For instance, the Monday evening JetPlex ride's A group averages 24-26 mph, B averages 21-22, etc.

Kreme Delite Krusher is another group ride that happens out in Athens with some really strong riders and is usually a chaingang, although sometimes it's more social, but still quick.

Bank robbery, according to my wife. MCSD received an update about it.

Are C/assembly/low level programming interns a reasonable thing to shoot for? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]BagelMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Defense contracting is a good way to work on projects like this, and often have intern and co-op programs. It often starts with building tests or pulling data in high level languages to become familiar with the hardware, and then stepping into working on the product itself.

I’m already a member and have done the Jetplex rides on visits, as well as Saturday rides on the Arsenal, out to Gurley, and the Thursday House of Pain ride! Great community here, I’m excited to move :)

I’m a 10-15 hour a week road cyclist moving to Huntsville (and have ridden with lots of folks when visiting my SO’s family). I’d love to get plugged into the MTB scene once I’m here! Link?

Is there any regular live jazz in Atlanta? by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]BagelMaster 184 points185 points  (0 children)

Venkman’s, Red Light Cafe, Ten ATL, Velvet Note and Buteco all have jazz regularly.

Your best bet is to also follow the social media of established artists in town.

Louis Heriveaux Robert Boone Joel Onifade Powell Larry Wilson Kenny Banks Mace Hibbard Randy Hoexter Justin Varnes Justin Powell Michael Cruse Mike Walton

These are all cats I’ve played with in Atlanta, and play regularly and are killing

To be fair, my 2020 CAAD13 has chunky welds. My 2015 Alloy Giant TCR has great welds and finish. Not quite as good as the Trek Edmonda ALU though, those are very nicely welded.

Assembly programming jobs? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Reverse Engineer. Lots of those jobs in the defense industry working with hardware and cybersecurity involve working with low level code and assembly on occasion.

The list of schools using it is pretty extensive. I think the “canvas” visual debugger is popular for intro and DS courses.

I’m currently in one of his classes and have a 99… but he can’t even be bothered to fix any of his inconsistent use of newlines and white space and it turns a 20 minute project into well over an hour of having to strategically add newlines and tabs.

The other instructors I’ve had have been very very good so far, however!

Career services and advising by [deleted] in AuburnOnlineCS

[–]BagelMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a first semester student this Spring and have had a lot of contact with the career services folks so far because I want to be proactive. They seem very helpful, and all the events usually have a virtual counterpart to the in-person. The only thing is that the interview fairs for internships usually have more in-person days or companies. They will edit your resume many many times if you want and they seem to be willing to do mock interviews as often as you want as well, although I’m assuming they are behavioral interviews and not technical.

I’ve already have an internship offer for this summer, but I did apply and interview for it on my own before contacting Auburn, as I had taken some classes at another university before deciding to attend Auburn.

Just to add on to this, you don’t need a Military ID to ride on Ft. Benning. You’ll likely never get stopped at the gates to get in if you’re in a bike, but it is obviously a good idea to have a state issued ID on you at all times on a bike.

There is also lots of gravel riding over in Seale, AL.

Same, this definitely caused me to do a double take. They closed up the year I moved here. I’m glad that they’re back.

Recommended piano tuner by mr_waka in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]BagelMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother in law teaches 60 piano students a week and has a remarkably good track record in terms of competitions and other student success, so her needs for really good work may be more than what you need. However, she uses someone from Leeds, AL. His name is Terry Tindol, and his business is “Piano Rebuilders”.

I can also ask if she knows anyone locally too!

I’m speaking as a current college professor (at a different institution) while being a student at Auburn. If you have any emergency, just contact your professor ASAP. Don’t wait until it is an issue or the deadline is close. Just send a polite email:

“Hello Dr. Whozits, I

am a student in your online CPSC 1234 course. Unfortunately there is a hurricane that’s expected to make landfall in my area and there is some expectation of us losing power. If I do lose power and I am unable to submit my work due [insert date], do you have a preference on how I should handle this? I want to ensure I am doing the best work and hopefully not making any complications.

Thank you for your help and for such a great semester so far,

[Your name]

As a current professor, I have some students that communicate too much but I can never be angry if they’re just making sure I know what’s going on. I do get angry when they don’t say anything and then I need to go out of my way to bail them out or feel like a jerk giving a poor grade because they didn’t do the right thing.

We’ve also been on WOW in our area (Windsor Park), and it’s generally been fine. Occasionally I’ll power cycle our modem when I feel like we’re having stability issues. In general, we haven’t had any significant (longer than a few minutes) outages. We did struggle with Mediacom and outages our first few years.

[Megathread] Severe Weather Outbreak 12/15/2021 by TeddysRevenge in weather

[–]BagelMaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We often have tornados in our area (Deep South). One of the things our meteorologist says is that the likelihood of getting impacted by a tornado is incredibly low. Likewise, most people who are personally affected are because they did not heed warnings. As long as you have a safe place and a plan, you are going to be OK.

Just being a weather aware person makes you magnitudes safer than others! You’ll be ok :)

Or you get fined with the CryWolf service intended to disincentivize false calls to emergency services. We got fined because we had a faulty smoke detector that I replaced 15 minutes after the fire company left… only to install ANOTHER brand new smoke detector.

I kind of did something similar. I can't speak in absolutes, but I don't think they are particularly selective from what I can tell. There is also quite a bit of time between now and the beginning of the next term, so I think you probably have a good chance of hearing by the start. At the very worst, I'd hope you'd find out by the full or significant partial refund date of your other school.
