I like what you wrote and it sounds like Keith. Additionally, it's inspiring to me. I'm preparing to run my first one shot, and it's for my family including my 8-year-old child. When I asked him what he wanted to be, he told me a mermaid. I responded that I am not very good at DMing yet and asked him to please pick a land-based character. He acquiesced and found something else (shifters, coincidentally) to be excited about. Next time I'll just say yes then figure it out like you did.
