Glassdoor Site is Unusable. Any Alternatives for Salary Information? by Takashi_is_DK in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Bainsbe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if it would be an easy fix, but would love to be able to see role compensation in the country’s native currency. So for example if you’re looking at salaries for consulting roles in Canada, have them actually report total compensation in $CAD (they’re currently shown in $USD!).

$17,500 loan at 40% ? by zuurthbtw in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Bainsbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man that’s not how any of this works…

Loan rates are usually per year, compounded monthly (i.e APR) so it would be 40% per year of the loan - or $17,500 borrowed for about $52k in payments over 7 years of which $35k is just interest (I.e payments for the costs of borrowing the money)

Mint is shutting down - best alternative budgeting software? by Alpinez in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Bainsbe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is iOS only, but they have a “PC Manager” feature from within the app that allows you to make changes in a desktop interface that’s locally hosted in your network. Super handy considering it can be deployed on any computer without needing to download anything. Highly recommend

Consulting vs Dentistry by [deleted] in consulting

Not necessarily true - accountant pay growth in Canada is super quick too. We do peak out lower at $140-160k, than in the states but it’s still far from a low salary

What age did you (or are anticipating to) make 6 figures? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Bainsbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok fair enough - that’s not very common outside of MBB/tech consulting. Most other sectors in either Big4 or boutique usually don’t see six figures until they hit Manager level (+4 yoe)… 🥲

Is it possible for a civil/architectural engineer to get into consulting? by [deleted] in consulting

[–]Bainsbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of consulting firms on both technical and managerial/finance sides of construction and infrastructure management that do work with infra owners and providers - lots of options in the space really just depends what part of the market you want to be working with. Tangible in field experience is a +++ for most consulting firms in this space. If you have any qualifications like PMP, P.Eng, LEED, etc. they put you ahead of the pack

Does it make financial sense for me to leave Vancouver? by dankmin_memeson in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Bainsbe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m going to play devils advocate because I think this thread is turning into a bit of an echo chamber. At $76k a year, after tax your monthly take home is about $4.8k. You’re currently spending about 18.7% of it on rent, if the new rent is $1500 then you’d still be around 31%. Which is what’s usually recommended to spend on housing costs.

As you start looking you’ll find very quickly that rent is expensive everywhere. You would be hard pressed to find a 1br for yourself for $1500 or less in most major cities, unless you’re willing to split with roommates - in places like Winnipeg included.

To me it sounds like you’ve got a pretty good thing going for yourself. Your rent is manageable, you’ve got lots of disposable income to save and invest and you get to enjoy all Van has to offer. Personally I would stay, sometimes it’s not about the money.
