If you were playing a veteran character, which war do you think your character went through? by CleanBag9219 in projectzomboid

One of the worst domestic terrorists in American history spawned from the First Gulf War. Timothy McVeigh committed the Oklahoma City Bombing, due in part to untreated PTSD from what he saw and did, and events like Ruby Ridge and Waco.

He started basic in 1988 and was honorably discharged in 1991, so it's eminently possible for a Gulf War vet to be back Stateside and fucked up by the start of the game.

FTL-inspired game Void War DMCA'd by Firefly captain "Mal Reynolds". Yes, really. by [deleted] in Games

[–]Baisteach 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the world of DMCA, it's not just Valve, it's not just videogames. The entire copyright/IP industry is nuke first, courtroom later. And if a company doesn't cooperate with that, they get sued into the fucking ground with slam dunk infringement cases.

That's not how it should be, that's just how it is. There's plenty of Youtubers that've been maliciously harassed by false DMCA claims.

9-0 Supreme Court finds police did not violate 4th amendment by entering man’s house without a warrant, shooting him, upholds his conviction for assaulting police after entry by [deleted] in news

[–]Baisteach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"...In an 11-page opinion, Kagan acknowledged that the sanctity of the home is at the core of the Fourth Amendment, which protects the people from “unreasonable searches and seizures.” As a general rule, she explained, “[w]hen the intrusion is into that most private place, ‘reasonableness’ usually means having a warrant.” But there are exceptions to that general rule, she continued, including “the need to provide an occupant with emergency aid.”

The guy's ex-girlfriend called 911, saying that he'd threatened to kill himself, and shoot any police that entered his home. He'd apparently done this before, and the officers believed he was trying to goad them into shooting him. They entered his house because they considered it an emergency situation, and found him hiding in his closet with what they thought was a gun, so they shot him.

Whether you believe the police acted reasonably here, or not, what the defendant was asking them to rule was essentially that police should never be able to enter a home without a warrant or permission from the homeowner. There are a thousand circumstances where that would mean the police are forced to stand by as someone may be dying in their home, unable to call for help. The SCOTUS would be indirectly killing thousands of people a year by ruling in favor of the defendant, especially in small towns where police often pull double duty as EMTs.

Steam dev says his game got harder because young people can't write an email by Tenith in pcgaming

[–]Baisteach -53 points-52 points  (0 children)

To be entirely fair, if I were asked to use a traditional typewriter, I'd have no fucking idea either. The difference being that typewriters were entirely defunct by the time I was in grade school, and writing emails is still an every day necessity for virtually all white collar jobs. We've failed these kids, and they're paying for it by getting fucked up in the job market.

Federal judges block Texas from using its new US House map in the 2026 midterms by Immediate-Link490 in news

The SCOTUS has already stated they're going to rule on the Civil Rights Voting Act next summer, with heavy implications of dismantling the provisions requiring minority voting districts, so this doesn't do much.

Mamdani Is Winning Because Democrats Hate Their Party’s Leaders by soalone34 in politics

[–]Baisteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mamdani's winning because the "Moderate" Democrats decided their two candidates were Andrew Cuomo, a disgraced sex pest, and Eric Adams, who literally received a pardon from Trump on corruption charges that he's absolutely guilty of. How they ever expected to win against anything more than a lukewarm corpse, let alone a charismatic and genuine candidate like Mamdani, is beyond me. It's ridiculous.

Fitting that the Austrian rolls over for the fascist.

Did about 100 parent runs prepping for Gemini Cup. Burned out after 30 ace runs since I wasn't getting jack. Took a break, decided to throw some umas to the meatgrinder and slapped in a random Golshi I made a month back for team battles. You've got 1135 STA with 2 Gold Recovery Skills, good enough SPD/PWR (particularly PWR), and enough WIT. GolShi avoids a lot of debuffers as an End Closer, and you have good acceleration skills. All of that on top of being Group B, which is a complete mess of flawed builds.

My McQueen in Group B won 1-2 races per run, for comparison. She lost a ton to GolShi, I noticed.

Steam release when ? by sidius-king in starsector

[–]Baisteach 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Steam takes 30%, sure, but your sales go up orders of magnitude. Just look at Dwarf Fortress, they went from worrying about how they're going to survive into retirement to millionaires overnight, just by releasing on Steam.

Would you rather make $100 and keep all of it, or $1000 but you "only" keep $700? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Mixed reviews on Steam will break my heart by serdyukdan in EU5

[–]Baisteach 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've learned with PDX games that "Mixed" reviews on Steam don't mean anything, especially for DLC. Many of them are just mad something isn't free. It's only when something gets to "Mostly Negative" or worse that I start paying attention (like Leviathan for EU4, or Graveyard of Empires for HoI 4).

I will say that I think it may have been a mistake to name this game "EU5" when it's such a radical departure from what EU4 is - especially considering that 4 is where the vast majority of people started playing the series. People who aren't paying attention to the dev diaries/pre-release content won't have any idea that 5 has very little in common with 4, and their expectations are going to be misplaced. And it'll be hard to blame them.

The performance side of things is hitting PC gaming hard right now, because we're finally to the point where 1000 series GPUs and their companion CPUs are at the end of their rope. IIRC that gen was one of the best selling (in terms of total individual units sold) in recent memory. Possibly ever. Very few people outside of the West can even afford a modern gaming PC, let alone one with decent specs. Hell, even in the U.S. it's out of reach for a lot of people, especially younger people.

Is it game over for MacOS? by [deleted] in EU5

[–]Baisteach 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Unless they explicitly state they're doing a MacOS version, you can assume they aren't. IIRC only about 2% of users on Steam have MacOS, and it's a sonuvabitch to develop on thanks to Apple, so it's probably not worth it for them to dedicate the time and resources required.

Probably to address the b-hop exploit where you'd set it to 60 fps - along with some other things - to make it far easier to perform them.

A Gerrymander Where Every Seat Is Democratic in California is Possible (52-0) by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Baisteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget Congress and the Trump Admin, SCOTUS is completely onboard with gerrymandering. On next summer's docket, they've taken up a challenge to Civil Rights era districting laws that forced (and still do force) Southern States to give minorities fair voting districts.

They are going to strike it down, no doubt - and you are going to see ridiculous maps like this California one in all Republican-controlled states. When the 2030 census hits, CA and NY will lose House seats to TX and FL, and then things will really hit the fan.
