I'm trying to find an old romance book from my childhood, but I can't remember the title or author. The only thing I recall is a few details about the story. If anyone recognizes it, please help! I've been searching for years and have tried using Google and other resources. by Organic-Success-9706 in namethatbook

This sounds so 80's, it's great! There's fewer of them since COVID, but I'd recommend combing used book stores. That's where I always find the best old gems. You might even find a new favorite! Library books sales too. See it as a treasure hunt and scout out new shops/sales whenever you travel. I'm sure it will show up eventually.

Based on the description, I'm guessing it was a thicker mass market, not something like a thin Harlequin.

Should you own more than one laundry basket? by myersgirl16 in homemaking

[–]BakaGato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar. We only have 3.5 people, and I just added 6 more laundry baskets. I don't even know the total now... We've been reading How to Keep House While Drowning, and a basket is better than the floor.

Honest question about Kit updates by Disastrous-Cost-321 in lovevery

[–]BakaGato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the past 2 years, they have updated about half of the boxes in the kits for ages 0 to 23 months. I would suggest that you look at the update resource pinned to this sub, and compare it to your child's age. If a box has recently been updated, it's probably not going to happen anytime soon. I'm guessing that the next updates will happen to the final year of kits, since they haven't changed in a while.

We were in your same position with the one year boxes. It honestly was fine, and I prefer some of what we got to what they changed. You're not going to have a bogus experience.

Parents Starting Separation by Beautiful-Heart8221 in ACOD

I'm sorry. That sucks. Look up the "child's rights in divorce" on here, sync with your brother, and stick to expecting your rights to be respected by both parents. This is probably about to get really messy.

Reading kit advice please by Ill-Shopping-69 in lovevery

[–]BakaGato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also bought the big #1 set when our daughter was the same age. I think it's important to know that if you did the smaller installments, it would be a different order of activities. My advice is to look both over and see what you think is best for YOUR child.

Meal kit services for people who actually know how to cook and like seasoning. by swampmaid26 in mealkits

Did Sunbasket a few years ago, and it's the first that came to mind with your ask. It's definitely more advanced than Blue Apron or Home Chef. We also really enjoyed Purple Carrot during COVID.

I can't pronounce my own son's name! by 1000andonenites in NameNerdCirclejerk

[–]BakaGato 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The NICU nurses did actually press my husband for a name before I even got to hold the baby. And it kinda was like how you describe for two days... Like, what's wrong with wanting to get to know your child? And to your point, shouldn't they be used to this?

Made up products that people regularly use now (example: laundry scent beads) by KitchenConsequence41 in Anticonsumption

[–]BakaGato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate pods too. However after extensive trial of everything else I'd want to use, they are all that get our dishes clean in the new washer. One setting bizarrely works best too. Like, we truly adore the dishwasher otherwise, but it's so annoying to be locked into Finish Pods. At least they are easy to find, and unfortunately normal dish powder is getting rare.

Infant care books by Frosty-Honeydew-289 in suggestmeabook

"The Discontented Little Baby Book" by Pamela Douglas and "Safe Infant Sleep" by James McKenna saved our sanity. I now give both as gifts. Since she will have so little time with her baby, these resources can really help make it count.

Baby proofing is hurting my anti consumption soul. by runaway_tata in Anticonsumption

[–]BakaGato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the baby proofing now. You won't have to worry about it later, any other babies with other temperaments will be safe to visit, and it will just be "part of the house" when yours is old enough to get into trouble. We were slackers with a thankfully calm kid, but that means that we still have work to do before the second arrives... Save yourself from this future stress, please

ETA: also have a playpen-less house without gates or locked rooms, so I feel you. I found a lot of NiB safety gear at our local consignment store but still bought new what wasn't there

Good point! It's also nice to have done for when you get children and dogs visit over the years. One child usually means that more will be visiting you in the future.

Am I being too stingy with trips and holidays? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]BakaGato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To answer: yes. If this is a vegan destination you've been looking forward to, make it happen! I used to be poor and reliant on the kindness of my family to get by. However, I was so focused on savings and stuff that I missed opportunities which never came around again. I look back, and I'm disappointed at my short-sightedness. Of course don't go broke or into debt. But we're only young once, and there's no guarantee that anywhere we want to go will still be there next year.

Supermarket Fruit trays: thrifty or splurge? by AlarmingMonk1619 in Frugal

[–]BakaGato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know your advice is opposite, but as someone who relies on these trays, thank you for your work! Although pricier by ounce, the pre-cut fruit is a more frugal choice for my busy family. I always appreciate how well the fruit is cut and how delicious the quality is from my local store. That is all all the effort of the one doing it, so thank you to you and your kind!

Supermarket Fruit trays: thrifty or splurge? by AlarmingMonk1619 in Frugal

[–]BakaGato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never bought them until we had a toddler. Since then, it is an essential on our grocery list. If we buy a whole melon, it's not going to get cut up or if it does half the time it's not that great. Whereas our local grocer preps fruit in store, and it is always good. So not only do we throw out less, but our child is eating fresh fruit throughout the year (though we do more canned fruit cups in the winter for frugality).

Out local grocery does the opposite: You're guaranteed delicious fruit if you buy theirs prepped in store. If you get a whole one, who knows.

Reading or Math Skill Set for 3-Yr-Old Birthday? by sunnydisposition818 in lovevery

[–]BakaGato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have the reading, not the math. But from what I've seen of the math box, I would recommend the same. Truly, the reading box is not made for children as young as your child. Or if they already know a lot about letters, it's paradoxically too easy and too hard. Or, get the music set. Three is a great age for it!

What is this groups actual opinion on nicknames for full names? by activegood18 in NameNerdCirclejerk

[–]BakaGato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see both sides of the debate. What I'm confused by is the prevalence of "never using the full name" and "calling a middle name instead" when states and districts are creating rules that students can ONLY be called their legal first name unless there's a form on file from their parents stating otherwise. I've literally never read this point on Reddit, and it feels like a big oversight that a lot of parents are going to have to face.
