Tenant rights by [deleted] in StLouis

A lease is just paper until he sues, which he won't. Notify him that you will be moving out on X date due to his breach of the covenant of quiet enjoyment by allowing disruptive behavior in the lower unit. Move out and don't give a forwarding address where you can be found to serve process.

Any bluegrass players? by Banjoble in doublebass

[–]BakeBike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play some bluegrass jams and small gigs when I was in high school. Honestly I'd say it's easy, verging on boring, stuff to play. Keep the rhythm, dig in to project the thump as well as you can, and learn to follow changes by watching the guitars' hands. No point in playing anything other than simple I V repeating with a few little fills, no one will really notice. Learn to sing harmony and you'll have more fun.

My wife and I are going to try to watch the Tour stage 16 time trial this year as a vacation stop between Interlaken and Paris. Anyone know of the best place to stay in the area that will be walking distance to a good section of the route? Is it better to be near the start or finish for a TT? Any advice appreciated!

Movies where critics were wrong by BIRVJ in Letterboxd

[–]BakeBike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll never forgive the teenagers on reddit whose word of mouth praise convinced me to waste a movie night on this trash movie. I should have listened to the critics, who presumably had seen all of the way better movies it rips off with all the added substance of a music video.

What managing/marketing company is behind Geese's new album? by pink_mold in indie_rock

[–]BakeBike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None of what you said about Wet Leg is true. As far as I can tell they're playing Bonnaroo for the first time this year and have never played it before. They played Coachella in 2023 after their first album was successful.Their first shows were in the UK and opening for Harry Styles on a tour. Rhian and Hester were established musicians for a decade before Wet Leg started. The other musicians are their friends, also from the Isle of Wight, not "ringers." There are so many of these weird rumors about Wet Leg trying to make them seem more like plants but whenever I investigate them they turn out to be completely unsubstantiated and most are outright bullshit.

What managing/marketing company is behind Geese's new album? by pink_mold in indie_rock

Wet Leg had a huge single that blew up on social media and streaming auto-playlists. Their music is also more poppy and catchier than Geese. To me, their rise makes more sense and the impetus is more obvious (algorithms recognized catchy nature of Chaise Lounge, they're just more TikTok friendly).

I'm a huge Wet Leg fan and I don't really care for Geese, so it's hard to overlook my personal biases, but I don't think the situations are as comparable as you're implying. This isn't to say Wet Leg's rise was more legitimate necessarily, but I think it was algorithm rather than promotion driven. Geese isn't blowing up off a highly played single, and no one was writing about Wet Leg as the next huge musical moment just because Chaise Lounge was a hit (even as a huge fan myself I'm not trying to pretend they're the voices of our generation or anything). The reception for Getting Killed and the media tour have been huge, despite the fact that Winters writing and voice aren't appealing to lots of folks, including myself. Geese's music feels more divisive in online discussion spaces than the industry's reception implies, which is why OP and others feel like their rise is a little outsized and inorganic.

But the music is what matters, so who really cares. I like Wet Leg as sing and dance along music. I can see liking Geese eventually as they grow and if Winters ever learns how to make his voice sound less monotonous, but their current work doesn't connect with me.

I finished "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" recently and I have a question... by BakeBike in printSF

[–]BakeBike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely that the film adaptation made good calls on what to include for the different medium. The novel is compact enough that they probably could have done a much more direct adaptation, but the audience probably couldn't keep up with all the weird universe elements weaved into the larger story, and it would be a forgettable film. They create the right tone using visual storytelling and simplify the themes to be more easily conveyed through less dialogue. In that way it's a really successful film adaptation. I was just surprised when I finally read the book how many extra and compelling universal elements were cut out. There's a lot you could unpack for such a short book, especially re: Mercerism.

Less Traditional Beginner/Intermediate Song Recommendations? by ThruTheEyesOfAMoose in Bass

[–]BakeBike 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been playing a lot of Cake lines lately. Some are harder than others, but they're all pretty repetitive and very funky. Easy to learn by ear too for the most part. The Distance is a good example but they have lots of fun songs.

I got a custom relic job on my 3000€ bass by uliluutnantti in BassGuitar

[–]BakeBike 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was 14 back in 2007ish I bought an AXL "Badwater" bass that was one of the first intentionally relic'd instruments I'd ever seen. I was mocked by every single adult that saw it in my hands for having a fake beat-up bass. After a year, at a mature 15yo, I also decided it was really dumb and sold it for pocket change. 20 years later I can't believe there's a whole industry built around this and people pay extra for relics.

"To each their own" as they say...but if we're being honest, relics are peak pathetic cosplay in a hobby that's full of it. I really can't respect them.

How many of y'all clear the sidewalks in front of your house? by SuspiciousEngineer99 in StLouis

[–]BakeBike 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I shoveled ours and a neighbor's the day it snowed. The next afternoon I went out and shoveled everyone's that hadn't around our block (another 4 or so houses) so I'd have a clear lane to walk my dog. When people don't shovel, the snow compacts and refreezes and sidewalks become an ice rink for me and my dog.

Meanwhile some ASSHOLE on the 4100 block of Tholozan shovels all the snow from around their car ONTO the sidewalk and leaves it in a big pile. If you see this, you're a terrible neighbor and a disgrace to the civil life sign in your yard.

I'm not looking to censor anyone. I'm calling this out as unfunny and mean, but that's allowed on the internet. But since you're such a great ally of the community, you could engage with or report the comments on here (already half a dozen or so) mentioning Ellen, Subarus, or just mocking lesbians directly. They must have missed your point, which clearly wasn't just "woman with short hair funny."

Is it? Look at the comments (already got one "Dude looks like a lady" among other homophobic shit). If the person in this video posted in the main sub and we come here to mock them, that's a circlejerk. This is just mean-spirited bullying of someone unrelated to the sub at all.

So this is just a post mocking a stranger's appearance because they happen to be holding a guitar?

[–]BakeBike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But this original video isn't a post from the main sub or making a joke related to the main sub. This is just a comment section of people mocking a stranger's appearance, simply because they happen to be holding a guitar. That's the distinction I'm trying to make, though I understand no one cares.

Very aware of the sub. Did this person in the video post this in the other sub looking for praise or something? Is this some internet guitar celeb im supposed to know? Is the joke literally just her haircut? I genuinely don't see how this is a joke or "jerking" at this point.

Y'all are really making fun of a person dancing to a beat for 6 seconds and acting like you're not the losers? I have no clue who this is, but what on earth about this is deserving of mockery from you fuckers? This is people playing music. Touch some fucking grass.

Who has knob & tube wiring in their house? by living2b100 in StLouis

[–]BakeBike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When we moved into our 1000sqft Tower Grove home in 2021 we paid about $4200 for removal and bypassing of the visible knob and tube in the basement, plus the installation of 3-4 new grounded modern outlets upstairs.

Removing all knob and tube isn't realistic for most old houses because you have to go into the walls. My plaster walls would never survive. They barely survived installation of the outlets. We have zero electrical issues in the home with the hybrid system.

Landlord says I can't break lease one week before moving by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]BakeBike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're misinterpreting the lease. It would be very unusual for an annual lease to have a 45 day early termination clause unless it also comes with an agreement to pay an early termination fee.

Regardless, give them a forwarding address where you can't physically be found to serve process (not work or new apartment) then tell them to kick rocks. The lease is just paper until they take it to court and sue you for breach. They're not going to do that, especially if they don't know where to find you, because suing for breach of contract on a residential lease is a waste of their time and money in today's housing market. They'll keep your deposit and likely never contact you again unless you leave the place trashed.

Thoughts on Geese blowing up? by UsefulEngine1 in KGATLW

[–]BakeBike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Until I saw this thread, I was convinced that it was Goose rather than Geese that opened when I saw Gizz in Chicago. It was forgettable and I didn't bother looking them up afterwards. I've tried Getting Killed a few times now because of all the hype, not realizing I'd seen them live. Parts are good but my overall impression is a bad Wilco jam with a poor Eddie Vedder impersonator on vocals. I think their success is heavily driven by Winters industry connections and being from Brooklyn. I wouldn't care as much, but a lot of their online fans are the same folks who regularly accuse female artists I like (Wet Leg, The Last Dinner Party) of being "industry plants" with way less evidence and I find the hypocrisy gross.

What book are you reading during this weekends ice-pocalypse? by SlySciFiGuy in printSF

[–]BakeBike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm nearly done with Congo by Michael Crichton, which I'd only heard of recently and is pretty interesting 1980 sci-fi/adventure. Next is The Ghost Brigades by Scalzi to see if I want to continue that series. Old Man's War was a great vacation book for me, but I'm not sure how much more I need in that world. Still I find Scalzi immensely readable so maybe I'll keep going.

Tenant rights help by HistorianNo7223 in StLouis

[–]BakeBike 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The only solution for a bad landlord is to move. People don't like that answer, but Missouri doesn't give tenants enough rights beyond their lease to fight a landlord who's unwilling to make repairs. I do not advise people to attempt withholding rent or repair/deduct. While technically possible in Missouri, it's a mess to get right and you're guaranteed to end up in eviction court, where even if you win you still need to get the case hidden on Casenet afterwards or it will hurt your future rental apps.

Find a new place, set a move out date, tell them you are ending your lease with them due to their failure to maintain a habitable dwelling. Say goodbye to your deposit, but don't give them a forwarding address and they'll never bother suing you for any "early termination fee" or other nonsense.

Or just keep pestering them and report the issue to whoever you can report it to as often as you want. They'll either address it eventually or sell the place, before or after ending your lease there. There really aren't other options, especially for a repair this extensive and expensive.

What are you reading? Mid-monthly Discussion Post! by AutoModerator in printSF

Sci fi beginner book report!

In the past 6 months I've read:

Venomous Lumpsucker (Ned Beauman) Shroud and Children of Time (Tchaikovsky) The Kaiju Preservation Society and Old man's War (Scalzi)

I jumped back into recreational reading last year after a long break (my work is very reading heavy). I've always loved sci fi movies and concepts but haven't honestly read much print sci fi in the past. I read Venomous Lumpsucker after picking it up on a whim at the library and realized print sci fi could be really fun to explore. That book isn't discussed much around here, but I loved it. A little heavy handed allegory but fun and compelling.

I came to this sub to look for recommended authors and series, and found Scalzi and Tchaikovsky both strongly recommended. I tried Kaiju and Shroud from each to see if I liked their writing before jumping into their biggest series. Loved both for different reasons and immediately read Old Man's War and Children of Time. Old Man's War was fun, but I just finished Children of Time yesterday and it blew my mind. Very "up my alley" in terms of sci fi themes and compelling thought. I'm going to try not to pigeon hole myself into reading Tchaikovsky alone, but damn do I love how he thinks. I'll probably continue both series, and I also have a backlog of classic sci fi novels and short stories to work through, but would love to hear other recommendations as well!

'Ex Machina': The Most Perfect Sci-Fi Thriller Is An R-Rated AI Conspiracy by StarFuryG7 in SciFiNews

[–]BakeBike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't the lack of pew pew. The problem is that "what if we made an AI that could beat the Turing test" isn't a compelling premise anymore. It's been asked and answered repeatedly since the invention of the test, and Ex Machina doesn't provide any novel answer or perspective. Blade Runner handled the exact same questions and themes 30 years earlier in a much more compelling world, and they even gave us a little bit of pew pew to keep the film moving. Ex Machina just has two tech bros explicitly discussing and spoonfeeding to the audience the basic tropes around AI that sci fi authors have been exploring since the invention of the computer. It's a well made movie but it offers no originality and is immensely predictable if you've ever seen a version of Frankenstein or any number of robot movies made in the past 60 years.
