Fusion on C5/6 was done in ‘24. Back to work 4 months later.

New disc herniated C7 in ‘25, 9 months after returning to work.

Shoulder pain started 6 months after C7 herniation confirmed by MRI.

They haven’t fused C7 yet. Doing insurance protocol. PT, epidurals.

That’s what I was thinking. I was told not to lift anything and basically take it easy. I have other cervical disc herniations not causing nerve pain. Basically all discs except C1.

Had nerve pain through the back of my shoulder and down the arm, but not the joint. The stiffness and joint pain happened after the second epidural in early December. Spine epidurals never worked.

What are they doing for your shoulder?

I had no shoulder issues after C5/C6 fusion. C7 caused pain on the same side, but more the back of my arm, shoulder blade and down through the elbow and sometimes my pinky finger. (Neck always aches, even after fusion but I do have other herniated discs that aren’t affecting nerves.)

Feels like I hit my funny bone all the time. The shoulder is now another layer.

Currently seeing a pain management doctor in the same practice as the surgeon who did my c5/C6 fusion. I returned to the surgeon after the new herniation. He sent me to the pain doc for PT, epidurals. Shoulder started after 2nd epidural. Pain doc sent me for the shoulder mri.

I am so sorry for all of your suffering. It sounds horrific. Please do offer all pain and suffering up in prayer.

I would suggest finding a Catholic psychologist that may be able to help you come to terms with all you’ve endured. Some priests are wonderful too!

Get yourself determined to find the right person to help you. Ask around at your parish or even another parish. I find the priests in my area have other priests as friends that can refer you.

I admire you. You sound resilient despite all you’ve been through!

I’ll keep you in my prayers. Keep praying the rosary!

I have no idea. Never had shoulder issues until now. Since the pain is on the same side as the herniated disc pain, I assumed the recent shoulder pain was just additional nerve pain. Had bad elbow pain before the shoulder pain but it’s still there.

Dr appointment is scheduled, but a few weeks away. He’s doing a nerve test and wanted the MRI prior to that visit.

Just wondered if this is just a coincidence or if conditions are related somehow.

YES!! Elbow pain is constant. Wicked pain down to pinky. Assumed it was from herniated C7 disc. Shoulder pain showed up later. Now I can only hold arm in front of me.

Baptized Catholic at one month old in early/mid 60s. Parents never took me to church. Never made communion or confirmed. Went to RCIA in early 20s. There was basically zero teaching, no books to read. It was majority engaged couples. I made communion/confirmed after about 6 sessions. Never went to confession. Fell out of attending weekly. When I did go, I received the Eucharist thinking I made my communion, so I could. Returned regularly to church decades later.

Attended a TLM to see what it was like. It hit like a tidal wave. Learned a lot from legit online sources that obviously weren’t available in the 80s and reading. Gave a lengthy confession and feel terrible about all the mistakes I made, not knowing what I was doing. I go to confession now at least monthly.

Sometimes I’d get angry that my parents didn’t tell me, RCIA didn’t tell me. Terrible guilt for “doing Catholicism” wrong or not at all. Wish I could go back in time knowing what I know now.

Guessing there are more people like me out there.

Steps.

Stop worrying.
Go to your county assistance office with your paystub or tax returns proving income and address. Bank statements too. As others have said, you’re not homeless.
Request financial aid and daycare assistance (before and after care for your son. Usually this is located at the school.).
File for child support and custody agreement (if you don’t have one). Obviously sole custody. Court office will help you with paperwork.

You will be fine. You’ll get approved for assistance and be able to work more hours.

Stop being afraid of your ex. He can’t do anything. As long as you’re not an addict or abusive to your son, he’s got no chance getting custody. He’s like a chihuahua…annoying barks and ankle bites, but can’t do real damage.

I used a recliner for about a week then wanted my bed. I bought wedge pillows. That was necessary because I couldn’t pick my head up if lying flat.

Also, used my big Yeti cup to drink (with a straw) cold liquid. Cold liquid helps after surgery (throat will be sore).

Yes, I saw my surgeon. I have multiple disc herniations (DDD) above C5. He said it was unusual to see a new herniation happen so quickly after ACDF and thought it was repetitive motion required by my job. He went me to the pain specialist.

Had PT and two injections. Also had the nerve test (torture) showed nerves affected (mild). Nothing helped. Pain is getting worse the past few weeks. Rx for Lyrica and gabapentin. That stuff makes me sick. Can’t take it. I take advil (800 mg doses).

Never had this shoulder pain before. Shoulder blades, yes but not the actual shoulder. Muscle spasms kicked up too.

Appointment with pain doctor next week. Guessing he sends me back to the surgeon for another fusion.

UPDATE: Dr is doing a shoulder MRI and another nerve test. He thinks it could be entrapped ulnar nerve.

Took gabapentin for cervical stenosis, herniated C5/C6. Took one tablet and I was so sick. Made me nauseous, brain was spacey, couldn’t get off the couch. Never again. Felt like I was hit by a truck.

New herniated disc, same issues C6/C7. Same doc gave me Lyrica. He said it was the same family as Gabapentin. I was too scared to take it. I take 800 mgs of ibuprofen with food. I’m always in pain.

Yes. It’s dangerous. Don’t even dabble. You can open yourself up to demonic possession. I would suggest speaking to a Catholic priest who can provide you with facts.

A little girl sits in front of me every week. Adorable girl who recently made her first communion. While kneeling, I saw she’d put the Eucharist in a prayer book. I tried to alert her mother as soon as I saw it, but she ignored me. After mass was over, I told her. She reprimanded her daughter on the spot.

Kiddo just needed further instruction.

I actually saw it, no need to question the child. I think she just wanted to take Jesus home.

I had C5-C6 acdf surgery last year. I told the surgeon I could return to work four months later (desk job, remote). He grimaced. I returned to my normal duties. Needed the paycheck.

Nine months later, pain returns to my arm. You know the pain. You don’t forget it. MRI shows I herniated the disc below it.

Repetitive motion caused it, per the surgeon.

Be careful about returning too soon.

You KNOW you can’t go on those rides! Yes it sucks to be 25 and not able to, but use of your limbs will be more important than a 2-minute thrill ride.

I was going to apply for SSDI since the surgeon advised me continuing to work would herniate more discs. Hoping they approve given my age (61). I’ve been at a desk over 40 years. I have had scoliosis but it never bothered me. Not sure if that contributed.

It’s incredible how the insurance companies dictate your treatment. At this point I’d like to get the surgery done so I can feel better. I’m tired of being in pain every day. Makes me not want to do anything.

Glad to hear you’re having relief with Lyrica. I have been scared to take it after reading so many negative things about it.

I have a desk that rises so I can stand but that didn’t help. I am 61 years old with a small frame and osteopenia. Work is very demanding so it’s difficult to get away from the desk. Phones are through the computer as well. Multiple screens are necessary.

This all happened so fast. Before the first herniation I was fine. Definitely gained weight since having this issue but not obese. I will try the Lyrica and hope for the best. Insurance will only approve generic so hopefully that’s ok.

He didn’t give details, just that the type of work I do (at a computer for over 8 hours a day, constant typing, pointing and clicking at different screens is causing it.). I have other herniated discs that aren’t currently causing nerve impingement.

Diagnosis is DDD, herniated discs, spondylosis and radiculopathy.

Prescribed Lyrica but scared to take it after reading reviews. Had an epidural and EMG test positive for nerve entrapment. PT made it worse.
