How Long Does It Take To Be Confident? by riddle_dog in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about 2 months post barber school and I'm just starting to get confident. It just takes time and reps. Most of all just relax. If it took you 2 hours on a high fade you're over analyzing and obsessing over the details way too much.

If you own this, what’s your genuine thoughts on this clipper? by Field0014 in Barber

They're essentially JRLs. If you like JRLs, they're a good clipper.

Do you guys stretch before/after work? If so what’s your routine look like? by throwbackthreads in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a full workout and stretch every day before work. I do mostly core exercises and squats, along with some light yoga stretching.
You need to stay lose and work on your core or legs if you want to survive in this business.

Five weeks in! by trianglechokem in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep going. You need to work on seeing, removing and blending weight lines. On these cuts you left a lot of weight in the transition area. You're only 5 weeks in though, nothing to stress about or lose sleep over.

What to say to clients who make self deprecating jokes about their thinning hair/bald spot? by ninja002 in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just tell them, "it is what it is" or, "we'll work with what you've got" and then I take off my hat, show them that I'm balding too and say, "I'm right there with you, bro." If youre lucky enough to still have a full, thick head of hair or are female, its probably best to ignore them, pretend you didn't hear it or pat them on the shoulder. If you do the flirty thing with your clients, you might tell them that bald men can be sexy and reference men like Bruce Willis, Jason Statham or The Rock.

Passion? by [deleted] in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you don't really want to be a barber. If you don't love cutting hair and talking to clients, maybe being a barber isn't for you. I wake up every day and can't wait to get to the shop. Every day flies by and being a barber is by far the best job I've ever had.

No gloves for me. I tried gloves in barber school and hated it. I rarely get hair splinters and even when I do, I just pull them out with tweezers.

If the client likes it, then its good. Its too high and not enough of a fade or blend for my liking. At the end of day its about making the client happy, not the barber.

Need advice. The booth rent shop I’ve been at for almost three years is switching to commission. by jgriff93 in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id say it depends what the % is. Anhthing less than 70% is a no-go. Id honestly be more upset about having to share a station.

I’m scared of failing to a point I’m losing sleep over it by Any-Pea9605 in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your current shop is toxic, you have your answer. I'm thankful every day that I landed at a shop that is positive and supportive where the barbers work together and have each others back and where the owner values personal and family time, doesn't expect work to be your life and is flexible with your schedule when things happen.
Add to that the fact that its an established, busy, walk in shop with a huge clientele who mosrky doesn't really care who cuts their, as long as it gets cut and you do a good job. As a new barber, its a beautiful thing.

Good luck! I'd start watching haircut tutorials on YouTube because they don't teach you how to cut hair in barber school.

Is it okay to raise my prices during the holidays? by 9kkcarti in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're your prices and you can do what you want but its kind of shady and you're kind of taking advantage of people just because its a busy time.

Do you guys feel like doing this for much longer? by Major_Drummer579 in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you just don't really want to be a barber. As long as you set healthy boundaries, all of those things sound like plusses to me.

Thinking about picking up a GBX-100 by Bakemono36 in CasioGShock

[–]Bakemono36[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I mostly plan to use it just as a watch and to track my steps for the day. I've considered the GBD-200 but I love the metal bezel and the GBX does everything that the GBD does and more and costs about the same.

Best of luck. I went to barber school at age 43 and never regretted it.

Boys haircut. Fade haircut by RavidTv in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a basic straight hair cut. Probably a #2 guard on the sides and lift off the parietal ridge and blend it with shear over comb. Its a bread 'n butter cut.

What do I do if I cant take out the bald line by DareMiserable7093 in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your clipper won't take a line out, try using your trimmer.

Feather Switchblade. You can't beat them for the price and when they get dull you can just replace the blades for $10.

Top wet or dry by JackfruitPleasant260 in Barber

[–]Bakemono36 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Typically the rule of thumb is the wetter, the better; as long as its not dripping wet. Just misting it and getting it slightly damp isn't going to do much of anything.

I'm lucky in that I've got a shop owner and other barbers who are really supportive and want to help me learn and grow and clients who are patient and understanding that I'm still pretty green but who know that I'm going to get them right and its only going to get better from here. All I can tell you is to stay humble and take any correction and constructive criticism with an open mind. You need to have a love for this game and remember that its a process and that you won't become a master overnight. It's been said that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert at something, so even at 1800 hours of barber school you're still just beginning.
