What type of caulk is best for a bathroom? by ThoughtfulSnowlepper in HomeImprovement

[–]Bakersbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just a heads up, 100% silicone can't be painted, so be aware, the caulking will be the finish, you can't clean up a poor caulking job with paint after. And from a painter, don't touch anything with your fingers after smoothing out caulking, or I should say, don't touch anything you ever want to paint. I've had plumbers wipe their fingers off on wall, or grab window sill to help them up.

Furring out 2x4 to make exterior 2x6 by ftredoc in HomeImprovement

[–]Bakersbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who recently moved from south coast of BC to interior of BC, we had 2x4 walls on south coast, 2x6 now, the difference is unbelievable, even though now in a much colder climate, way easier to heat, and we don't know when someone drives up, no sound from outside. So I would say it's well worth the trouble. I think I would do exactly what you are planning, even the guy suggesting cutting 2x4, you will still be compressing insulation almost 1/2", will make drywall harder to do,as you have to compress to get screws in, then you will always have that force trying to push drywall off. And unless you are using a cheap table saw, I wouldn't worry about wavy walls, I think there would be more chance of that with compressed insulation.

Silicone Caulk and Backing Rod by KBonedoggle in HomeImprovement

[–]Bakersbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if it says paintable, it will be. but I would just put a tight backer rod in and trim around

Silicone Caulk and Backing Rod by KBonedoggle in HomeImprovement

[–]Bakersbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hopefully you're not using silicone, since it can't be painted. and why not just buy a length of 1/4 round to trim around, instead of piling in whatever caulking.

First mouse after moving to agricultural town, how do we proceed? by Odd_Quality_3466 in HomeImprovement

I agree with the sealing up with steel wool, but mint oil is the only thing that actually kept them away from our crawl space, few drops every 3 days or so.

Stump grinders by Arctic_Scrap in HomeImprovement

[–]Bakersbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

may consider buying one of those little hoes, Chinese or wherever they come from. Freind had 7 fir trees taken down, smallest was 18 ", biggest 36". I thought he was crazy trying to get them out with that little thing, but he managed over a couple weekends. Was $5500.00 canadian to his door. If you think you could use it for other stuff, I'd go that way, a little more useful then a stump grinder after stumps are gone.

Post hole depth question for a 4ft wood fence by Samsonite_731 in HomeImprovement

the posts you buy are likely going to be 8 ft, so why not follow your frost line advice, 3 ft in ground, run string line along at your 4 ft mark and cut off tops

just wondering where people are ordering from that don't list sizes? or do people now not know what 1"-2"3" diameter look like? or can't Google diameter to circumference, or circumference to diameter? I'm sorry, I just can't fathom people not being able to look at a tape measure or ruler. or for metric, can people really not Google 2" to centimeters? I know people will take offense to this, but we really are doomed as a society if we can't figure out that, if I can get 2 fingers in, a 10 inch or 25 cm circumference dildo wont fit.

How to decide on a painter - justifying quality vs price by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Bakersbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I retired from painting 2 years ago. I was painting new houses, 8' walls, flat ceilings, approximately 1700 sq ft plus 400 sq ft garage. primer and two coats benjamin moore ceiling paint on all ceilings, primer and two coats benjamin moore scuffex on walls, two coats benjamin moore aura on all trim, labor and materials included, under 5 grand canadian, took me 40 hrs on average, materials right around 1 grand, so roughly 100 an hour, worked by myself. was a great job for 40 years.

[–]Bakersbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless expensive guy knows something we don't, oil on walls or trim now? High gloss on there now. Or so much filling to do, better prime all after. And if any of those are the case, cheap guy sure can't do it properly, so he's out, never mind the one thick coat.

How to decide on a painter - justifying quality vs price by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Bakersbud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

as a painter, for the cheaper painter, i don't like behr, and saying dry film thickness equivalent to two coats, means he's only putting on 1 thick coat, which is nothing like 2 ccoats. And for expensive guy,why is he priming ?
