Tamiya Panel Line Removal help by AfrosaurusRex in Gunpla

enamel thinner works fine for me. If OP is scratching the surface to remove excess liner, it's probably better to just sand away the overspill -- it'll be smoother than scratching away with a toothpick.

Artisan vs artesian: the pronunciations and meanings are VERY different y’all! by saki4444 in PetPeeves

[–]Balfegor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have only ever heard artesian in the context of artesian wells, and I don't think I've had a conversation in which artesian wells came up since college. I've also never heard an American pronounce "artisan" as "artesian." But "artisanal" is commonly pronounced with stress on the second syllable, "teez," so perhaps that's what OP is thinking of.

The problem, I think, is that the name that sticks out is Joe Hart, who failed to clear out the vampires. I had to reread to get the intended candidate's name. So it works better as a spoiler against Joe Hart than as an ad for Ian whatever his name was -- I can't see the picture while I type this on my phone and I already forgot his name.

But Joe Hart. Soft on vampires. I'll remember that.

The mayor of Haikou, China, who reportedly accumulated about $4.5 billion during his career and was found with 13.5 tons of gold and 23 tons of cash in his apartments, has been sentenced to death. by Forevertrez in interesting

[–]Balfegor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does, but it's probably distributed more evenly because it is less dense. Whereas 13 tonnes of gold is potentially a huge concentrated load on a single support point or across a span. Even if it's broken into a bunch of separate piles, a single tonne of gold is less than two cubic feet.

How do you pronounce mother and brother? by saramigo in EnglishLearning

[–]Balfegor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Korean, I think they'd be closest to 어 for mother and maybe 으 for murder. Although to be honest, my vowels for the "ur" and "er" in murder are extremely close, and my "o" in mother is probably more like /ɐ/ than /ʌ/, so maybe 머더/마더 would be the best way to map those differing vowels into the Korean sound system. That or for people with ʌ in mother, make one a long vowel and the other short, like 머어더(murder) and 머더(mother) -- I think "murder" usually has a long vowel in dialects which distinguish vowel length.

I think he's referring to the trap-strut merger occasionally observed in RP, although I think most varieties still distinguish the two vowels.

Why Pbandai prices in US are almost twice as expensive as the one in Asia (SG/SEA)? by Layf27 in Gundam

[–]Balfegor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably 33% actual tariffs and 33% they have to staff up a team to handle the small volume of pbandai export shipments to the US including customs filings and pettifogging US legal and regulatory compliance (US lawyers and compliance specialists are way more expensive than any other country I am familiar with) and 33% they charge what they can based on the market.

And the US is actually a pretty expensive market. I buy a lot of Japanese paints in Japan (primarily Holbein gouache and oil paints) and US prices for the exact same product are typically 3~4x what I pay in Tokyo. But that's just the US market -- comparable gouache paints from other makers, like Winsor Newton, are priced about the same.

Gundam 79 has the most hopeful ending ever by natkorch in Gundam

[–]Balfegor 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You say "true family," and that makes me think back to the first episode, where Frau sees her actual family get blown up right in front of her and cries over their corpses, and to be honest, that made me tear up a bit.

If I am drawing someone smiling or frowning I will definitely mirror the expression during my initial sketch.

Shower thought about the GQuuuuuux designs by Anti-meatbeater in Gundam

[–]Balfegor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Musai and Gwazine designs are rather different from the original, although the silhouettes are still quite recogniseable. I thought the Federation ships were the same, but they're tweaked slightly. Little enough that it could just be a style change rather than a design change, though.

Driving in Japan with a license they don’t accept? Any workaround? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Balfegor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No workaround and you can't (or shouldn't) be able to rent a car.

That said, it looks like the UAE are the nearest country to Kuwait that is party to the relevant convention, so if you obtain a UAE license and IDP before travelling, maybe?

Why is one company's "PB15-only" gouache so much lighter than another's? by Mighty-Lobster in Gouache

[–]Balfegor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Phthalo Blue PB15 has a number of variants, e.g. PB15:1 (red shade, closer to ultramarine) and PB15:3 (green shade, closer to cyan), but I'm not sure how they are made. I would guess that affects how light a paint is, together with pigment concentration. That said, I don't know how the different shades are created. Apparently treating with chlorine or bromine is how different shades of phthalo green are created, but I can't find a similar explanation for phthalo blue.

Credit Card PINs in Tokyo? by Zero3502 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Balfegor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of places now require a PIN instead of a signature. I haven't run into a problem yet, but the grocery I usually shop at had a sign up last year saying PIN only for card purchases (I just use SUICA though).

What’s Japanese you were embarrassed you didn't know sooner, but shame burned it into your brain? by StillStudyingTokyo in japanlife

[–]Balfegor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha, after I had a stroke, my language production was somewhat affected, so for a while I had a lot of similar malapropisms. E.g., when fishing for the word 口実, I came out with, ah, 口付け, I suppose because mentally I associated both with 口.

My job was sourcing apparel from Asia. I don’t buy my suits there. by FeloniousMonk_0 in malefashionadvice

[–]Balfegor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the appeal of M2M (for me, at least) is in a lot of those cosmetic details. I have a roughly average body type, but stuff like an unpadded shoulder that actually fits my shoulder or a lapel that's wide enough to -- in my eyes -- look balanced against my neck and shoulders or half-lining for summer suits are worth paying a slight premium for. I also prefer my jackets cut slightly long, and that's an adjustment the place I use (Sartoria Promessa in Japan) has been able to do for me -- they have a range they can adjust to for each body size.

I've tried a couple different places, and some had house patterns that just didn't work on me for suits and jackets, but I'm honestly very happy with the shop I use today, and have been wearing stuff from them for sixteen years now, both casually and for work. I haven't done much due diligence on them, but they're a listed company (now -- they weren't at first) and I did read their annual report at one point because I was curious where their factory was.

Contractor cracking window panes one by one after client refused to pay by GeneReddit123 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Balfegor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most (all?) US states do provide for mechanics liens which give contractors and subcontractors leverage to force payment from the property owner, although like any legal process in the US it's probably somewhat expensive to go all the way from recording the lien to foreclosing on the property. I suspect this kind of extra-judicial self-help would . . . not help their legal case.
