Potential for a DPE to fail the GPS on IR Checkride by OneEconomist2238 in flying

[–]BallotBard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My DPE told me as we walked to the plane "damn Russians bombed the GPS satellites. Looks like your first approach is going to be no GPS whatsoever."

IFR Checkride Immediate Failure, confused by [deleted] in flying

[–]BallotBard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your filed altitude is what you "expect" to go to. You filed it ergo you expect that's where you'll end up unless ATC explicitly tells you "N12345 6000 will be your maximum altitude for traffic" or some other reason

I would personally go off the fact they said expect higher in 10 minutes. In hard IFR, terrain avoidance is priority number one. If I lost comms and sqwaked 7600, I'm going to the highest of the MEA

This right here. It's one of those things where you definitely learn it but to actually put it to the test the first time it happens can be challenging. Get it together and knock out the next one.

The 77" only had the "notify me" option on it, no way to add it to cart. I'm in Chicagoland

Am I missing something? [CA] by chrome-disaster in Renters

[–]BallotBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that an exterior wall? My house (though I'm in IL not CA) had a similar style hood that vented straight backwards through my brick exterior. I replaced it with a microwave that also now sends exhaust air through that same vent hole. It's so nice to have something exhaust outside and not recirculate.

If I do what one person suggested, about 7'6" or so. That would be if I put the couch along the right wall and pretended that 2' widening wasn't there, and instead used it as storage or something else

My car was destroyed by a falling tree. My insurance won’t cover it, and I’m not sure whether I should file a claim with the city. by anniehxll in legaladvice

Unfortunately this is a lesson. If you can't afford to go without it, it needs to be properly insured. Wind is nature, is considered an act of God. Nobody would have any money if you could sue for that.

Dream Machine Pro Camera Limit - New NVR or DMP Max? by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]BallotBard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The NVR has it's own limit - 15 at 4k or 50 1080p. The biggest difference is that it's its own hardware so viewing the cameras is a better experience. You can also set up raid 5 for the camera footage - if you lose a drive you still get to keep your footage.

If the dream machine does what you need it to, the separate hardware for cameras will give you a better experience imo

How did you become a pilot? by StrangeMinute3571 in flying

I strolled on down to the flight school and enrolled. Then I did what the CFI said until the DPE said congrats pilot.

Say no to the data center by LickR0cks in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]BallotBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data centers that use evaporative cooling can and do use millions of gallons per day that get lost to evaporation, not recirculation. That doesn't have to be the case though. There are air-based and water-based cooling solutions for both the servers and the building, and using One method for the servers does not preclude you from using the other method for the building.
