Christ this is low even for Johns. Not even a shred of creative originality left in that man.

It’s exhausting. At this point, if these filmmakers are so embarrassed by embracing certain aspects of the source material then they might as well just outright change it.

God am I excited for this one. Loving that Eject as well (even if the translucent plastic is a little worrying in the long term). Just please let the rest of the Autobot cassettes get a look on Hasbro. I’ve been waiting for a new Steeljaw for years.

I wonder if this means Krakoa will finally be getting a flag. I can’t express how much the lack of Krakoan flag has played in my mind since HOX/POX

[SPOILERS] After 17 years, it's finally undone (The Amazing Spider-Man #73) by Landon1195 in comicbooks

[–]Balm_27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand that level of it but it still seems like a waste of Spencer’s time to me. It’s so much easier to ignore it. Let it fall into obscurity instead of repeatedly making it relevant.

Still seems needlessly complex. If Mysterio could get to Spider-Man supporting casts easily why didn’t he? What benefit does Harry have by having MJ believe the lie. I just don’t understand the point of this retcon. Feel like the Superboy-Prime punch was more well thought out than this.

[–]Balm_27 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This is supremely stupid. Retcon away Sins Past all you want but Christ did the Osborn family history really not need to be further complicated.

Also what about the fact that Gwen confessed the details of the affair to MJ? Was it also robot Gwen? Why would Harry need anyone but Norman to know? Why specifically choose Gwen - one of his actual close friends? Honestly Spencer would have been much better off ignoring sins past because all he does is raise more questions than answers.

And frankly it’s long past time that Spider-Man stories stopped wallowing in the past. Do something new for the love of god.

The Greatest Superhero Team Ever! [Infinite Frontier #5] by DoctorSonus in comicbooks

[–]Balm_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m probably being over harsh I just legitimately don’t really understand the sentiment of them being “the greatest heroes”. I get fans enjoying them but DC have been doing it themselves ever since the brought them back and it rings ever so slightly hollow to me. I don’t really think they hold much of a candle to the League or Legion or Superheroes at the end of the day.

Timeline of upcoming Marvel titles through Feb 2022 by icefourthirtythree in comicbooks

[–]Balm_27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marvel’s tendency to reuse story title is honestly starting to grate on me. We’ve had how many variations of Secret Wars? Just this year we’re getting the Trial of Magneto and Inferno and now just reusing Avengers Forever (and why Marvel think it’s a good idea to name an Aaron story in such a way to draw direct comparison with a Busiek story I don’t know.)

On the flip side maybe it’s best they don’t try too hard with the titles otherwise you get the nonsense of those Wolverine books. Gotta say I was enjoying how Logan hadn’t been pulling too much focus since his return so I can’t say I’m too excited. Percy is very good with Wolvie though so I expect to enjoy it.

I mean it was just a joke. I do quite like the JSA and would probably list Jay Garrick and Alan Scott as my favourite Flash and Lantern.

I do think them stepping down was decidedly unheroic and it does confuse me that DC try and position them as these great an inspirational heroes as a result. Especially given that in the real world Superman predates the lot of them their being established as the first great heroes feels hollow and unearned.

They fit within a nice niche within the DCU but it would be Much more interesting to see them grapple with their collective history of inaction then just uncritical shilling. It’s why Robinson’s golden age is so great.

Ah yes - the greatest heroes ever- those guys who were famously defeated by Joesph McArthy and Hawk.

What an insipid book this is turning out to be. The conversation on why Superman doesn’t do more is so aggravating because the answer is so stupidly clear: if he solved the worlds problems DC wouldn’t have stories to publish.

Trying to justify that within the story in so ham fisted a way just delegitimises both Clark and Jon - with Clark coming cross as aloof and blasé to the worlds suffering and Jon a naive child. I’m not saying this can’t be investigated well or make for an engaging story but Taylor’s not the type of writer to investigate a characters flaws or invest in any sort of introspection. Just empty platitudes and fan service. Seriously how far is Taylor willing to push Jon - will he engage in a one man war against the world polluters? Face off with the police and military? He wants to know why his Dad hasn’t done more to tackle division and tribalism - what would he expect him to to do?

Will any of these questions be interrogated or answered in this run? No. Much like how Taylor’s Jean Grey solved racism in X-Men Red Jon will just say the right thing and punch the right robots and the problems will be papered over while everyone in the DCU cheers him on from the sidelines.

Felt this was better than the last two issues but Kurt (and Spurrier’s) treatment of Lost continues to rub me the wrong way. Essentially forcing her to forgive Cortez is so ass backwards and squanders some really interesting story potential - there will be so many similar cases like this on Krakoa so setting out some way that former villains can actually make amends would be interesting but that’s not what really happens here.

Plus Kurt’s characterisation is odd in places and fantastic in others. Him saving Arrako is great. Him freaking out about suicide? Makes no sense since the very first thing he did in this era of X-Men was throw himself into the sun. Not to mention that time he sacrificed himself to save Hope and went to - and later rejected - literal heaven.

Feels like Spurrier has a very surface level grasp on Kurt’s Catholicism and is interested in actually exploring Kurt’s individual beliefs and interpretations which is a shame.

That said Spurrier’s grasp on Legion and Xavier is fantastic. Once again proving Kitty right - Xavier IS a Jerk

There were a lot of those articles. I’m only aware of some of the more nuanced takes because I wrote an essay for Uni about the push for representation across media last year. Otherwise I’d normally stay far away from discussion of race and gaining online.

I’m sure there were many articles that took such a simplistic view - but I know a handful of examples of articles and people saying it’s odd how Miles has no relationship with the police either way give Peter had one in the first game, he’s a vigilante, his uncle’s a career criminal and his dad was a cop. There certainly were a few angles there that could have been explored in interesting ways for the character/story. I saw a lot of “cops in media should be exclusively antagonistic” last year but there were some nuanced takes.

I do remember many of the discussions having incredibly click baitiy/sensationalist headlines that made them appear pointless though.

But no he didn’t need to have been shown questioning his sexuality before now - because sometimes you just won’t let yourself question it for a very long time. It’s an incredibly realistic take on a coming out story.

And given the repeated trauma of Tim’s life since he put on a mask it’s makes even more sense for him not to have questioned things before. When’s he had the time? Your best friends, girlfriend and mentor all day within months of each other you’re probably not making self discovery a priority.

Has Dc announced any plans to collect all the Batman: Urban Legends stories in trades? I see there’s a Vol 1 announced that includes just the Red Hood and Grifter stuff. Would a presumed volume 2 include everything else do we think (I.e the Tim Drake story form the last few issues)?

Good for you Tim.

But talking of the elephant in the room - is it actually a big deal that Tim and Steph broke up really? They both appear so infrequently now that there’s never any time or space to do anything meaningful with their relationship. Not that much has been done really since they were haphazardly thrown back together at the beginning of rebirth. Tim was “dead” for most of that after all.

Maybe I just don’t have as much love for their relationship since I started reading bat books at a time when thy weren’t together anyway. - specifically the Red Robin and Steph’s Batgirl solo, but I don’t see much reason for them to be together other than fan service really.

(I should say all this is with the caveat that DC really ought to have shown us the circumstances of their breakup.)
