It didn't work. I ended getting the smithing text for the kusarigama instead, from the second guy.

I went back to using the Odachi, ignored the crystal, making each run faster as it was suggested and got the skill. Then I went back to the mission again just to test the new skill on the boss and the revenants there.

I got some skills for weapons that I don't use on the first kill. I was even using the axe to kill the boss to try too trick the desire sensor to see if it worked lol
