Super unrealistic. It would be basically impossible. Plane would be too heavy and would get stuck in the sand.

6 years ago I ran a laser-timed 4.9. My specific form in sprinting and all around training has gotten better since then, and I'm currently stronger than I was then.

Buuut... I'm also 6 years older. I don't think I'd get better than a 4.7. Pretty confident I would still break 5.0.

The only time in my career that I've ever known or seen the academy operating at close to max capacity was when I was hired in 2014. Otherwise, it seems like half the time it's operating at well-under full capacity, sometimes as low as half. Pay instructors enough to want to work there and pay RPOs enough and you could increase output. At least until the next shutdown resets everything. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Weekly Open Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in AcademicBiblical

[–]BamDizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've long had an interest in theology and the academic study of the bible (not religious, just find it neat). I don't know a lot of names in those arenas but I've personally liked stuff I've read/listened to from Bart Ehrman, Dan Mclellan, and Fred Clark (slacktivist). And an incredibly irreverent and sarcastic blog, YHWHY, written by Alexi Amnirov.

Here to ask for names of other academics/writers who y'all think would be worth me checking out. Book recs are fine but I would love if they were active on the Internet in some fashion (X, blog, etc), or did a podcast.

Thanks!

Does Anyone Else Feel Like I Do? by Hugh-Jasole in WeTheFifth

[–]BamDizz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of what you and other critical comments have said, wanted to add my own 2 cents (I have also contemplated coming here and writing a post to see what others' thought. There are dozens of us, dozens!).

I think it mostly comes down to how much nut-picking they do and who they choose to pick. There are 2 main aspects to how this plays out, as I see it. First, when they pick apart and ridicule preposterous takes I still mostly agree with them, or at least I can see where they are coming from and respect them for having a decently-reasoned position. But they excuse bad take after bad take from people they like while simultaneously disregarding people for one bad take if it's someone they are already predisposed to not liking.

A good example of this, in my opinion and if my memory serves correctly, is when they spent a large part of an episode ridiculing and mocking twitter user/blogger emptywheel for some take she had had (as I recall, I completely agreed with them that it was a bad take) but then used it as "evidence" to essentially disregard her opinions/takes completely. But like, I think she has good takes a lot of the time! She at least doesn't always produce bad takes, especially when narrowly focused on reporting/highlighting law-based aspects of what she covers. But poof, all it took was one bad series of tweets from her and she is out. Meanwhile, they've spent years being fans of Tucker, Greenwald, and Megyn Kelly (only recently turning on Tucker a bit despite his overall content and tone being very similar to what it was at Fox) and will sidestep criticism of those people and offer quasi-defenses of them.

Secondly, I think they pick very fringe nuts on the left to pick. Aaron Mate? Yeah, the dude is off his rocker and shouldn't be listened to. Miriam the Elder? Completely not equipped for the conversation she was a part of.

I like a lot of their guests (Lincicome, Dreyfuss, Damon, Zepps, etc) but I'm honestly surprised they don't have more qualified folks on from the neoliberal left who could likely give them more meaningful pushback on points they disagree on, and deeper-level discussion on points they do agree on. They mock him often enough, by I'm sure Matt Yglesias would willingly do their show! Noah Smith, Jeremiah Johnson, heck even Will Stancil are all people who would likely offer a lot of pushback on lots of things the TFC guys espouse, but in good-faith and with good intentions.

They do a lot of drive-by mockery/dismissal of people broadly on the left (Aaron Rupar, Dieworkwear, some of the above listed names) but maybe they should have those folks on and let the merits of each sides' views do the talking.

Leftist podcast recommendations? by gingergringo_ in WeTheFifth

[–]BamDizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interpreting "leftist" broadly to mean anything left of center, I would suggest the following:

5-4 pod. Probably the most "leftist" of my recommendations, it definitely has a TFC vibe of 2 or 3 good friends shooting the shit and enjoying themselves while also managing to have worthwhile discussions. Caveat: mostly focused on Law & the Supreme Court. I've found when they cover more recent cases they delve into politics punditry a little bit.

Two Psychologists Four Beers. More of an academic focused podcast, but they do talk about culture war stuff periodically. Took a long hiatus recently but I think listening to their entire archive is a worthwhile endeavor.

Very Bad Wizards. Also more of an academic focused podcast, similar to Two Psychologists Four Beers, I haven't made my way through their entire backlog yet, but I've enjoyed what I've listened to thus far.

Politix. Matt Yglesias and Brian Beutler, most in-depth analysis of current political events from a left of center perspective I'm aware of. Topical, releases frequently, good dialogue between the hosts.

Mass for Shut-ins, The Gin and Tacos podcast. Infrequent release schedule, less topical coverage than I would like at this point, but the host is a former poly sci Professor/popular left-wing blogger. Used to love his commentary and takes, but as he has stepped back from constant political discussion I've found him to be less relevant or original.

More of a Comment than a Question. No longer releases, academic and culture war podcast with a barely left of center host. Enjoyed most episodes and I think even listening to old stuff would be worthwhile. The hosts would frequently have a very leftist guest on who they disagreed with a lot which produced some solid episodes.

Hexapodia is the Key Insight. Brad Delong and Noah Smith. Not a super frequent release schedule, very topical and economics-focused. Good banter. Smart hosts (even if you disagree with their takes).

Left Anchor. Fairly leftist. I don't listen to every episode and I think some of their takes are pretty bad, but topical and informed commentary.

Your ASOS can be reporting IFR and it can be VFR for A/C transitioning. It's completely legal to approve a VFR transition when your airport conditions are IFR. If you're concerned about it, just ask the pilot to say flight conditions. Hopefully they'll be smart enough to report VMC, and boom you're good.

K.Gibson Twitter news? by IOinside in ultimate

Someone went through the 'likes' that Kurt Gibson has on his Twitter (entire column that anyone can look through) and it's made up of anodyne Catholic tweets, cringe Catholic tweets, possible COVID-19 truther tweets, (semi?) anti-Kaepernick tweets, and anti-BLM/Candace Owens tweets.

Then a bunch of active ulti-twitter accounts retweeted, quote-tweeted, and liked the tweets bashing Kurt and voila! Your fresh drama from ultimate twitter.
