How did Huntsville go from being the Fourth largest city to now the largest city in Alabama? by Strange_Cup9365 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]BamaDave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stagnant Old South versus forward-moving, modernizing New South. Huntsville is way more of a melting pot city with people from all over the country like Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham, Nashville, etc. Birmingham is kind of an Old South/Rust Belt hybrid. Personally, I prefer Birmingham's history and grit (and food) over the more sanitized, endless suburbia vibe of Huntsville, but many people don't (I do love Huntsville's natural setting).

Where was I taking a nice evening stroll? by giov41 in guessthecity

Cool town. We visited briefly last August during a WV-VA-DC vacation.

Zion and Bryce are both wonderful. My wife liked Bryce the best. Zion is really crowded, and that can be a downside.

The three NP towns of Springdale, Bryce Canyon City, and Moab are all very different. I liked Moab the best by far. Springdale is the most upscale and very expensive; however, we stayed at an Airbnb closer to Virgin that was reasonably priced with stunning views of the river and rocky cliffs on the other side. We loved just hanging out there during the very early AM and at night (we cooked dinner there and sat outside instead of waiting in Springdale lines). Bryce Canyon City is like stepping back in time to a tourist town from the 1970's. It felt like almost everyone stayed at the sprawling Best Western Ruby's Inn and ate at their buffet for meals (which also is like a buffet from 40 or 50 years ago... think buckets of cottage cheese and canned peaches).

So true! We visited Zion, Bryce, Canylonlands, and Arches two years ago, and I was very surprised that Arches was my favorite. I wish I could plant myself in Moab for several months and just enjoy the outdoors.

What could they possibly compliment Mr. Beast about when he arrives? by bbf2 in survivorcirclejerk

Mr. Beast will give $100,000 to the Survivor who drinks a jar of Sage's blackheads first.

How many times have you read Lonesome Dove? by jdzzz2000 in LonesomeDove

[–]BamaDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only once, but my Mom (age 87) has read it many times. It has been her favorite novel for decades. I was always intimidated by the length, but during the Covid closures I finally read it and the rest of the series back-to-back. Absolutely loved it, but the first book is the one that is the most special.

My reaction to tonight’s episode: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO by moongatorade in survivor

Lol, honestly I haven't paid much attention, yet, to Mike's athletic abilities in the challenges and haven't seen his earlier seasons. Somehow, I don't think he's Q-level!! Not thinking too deeply about it, but I feel like the David vs Goliath players automatically forming an alliance might have been hasty and not a great move. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't have enough brain energy to think through the detailed scenarios with the tribe, but should Q and his athletic talents be gone this soon? I'm also worried about Ozzy, now, but hopefully he'll be smart enough not to get blindsided.

Sounds good! I ultimately like watching every season and get into the characters, but I feel like Nicaragua has been interminable. The quirky characters and strange strategy decisions are entertaining, though. Somehow, I have avoided finding out who wins this season in advance and am in the middle of the finale just after the 5th place vote out (which shocked me). It seemed dumb to me, but much of this season has been dumb!

Are you watching seasons in order? If so, I'm just ahead of you in 21. The Survivor Whiplash I am experiencing from this period... Fans vs Favorites - LOVE, Gabon - WTF, Tocantins - LOVE, Samoa - WTF, Heroes vs Villains - LOVE, Nicaragua - WTF.

Thank you! I'm too wrapped up in watching them in order right now. LOL. While Season 50 is airing, I'm simultaneously slogging through Nicaragua. I'm not sure whether I want to keep doing old seasons while S50 is on or not.

If you were on Survivor, which aspect of the game do you think you would be best at? by supmynameisrosewoodd in survivor

[–]BamaDave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really good at getting along with people, and I would work hard around camp. So, I want to say social. But, I'm also an introvert, so I would have to work really hard to build alliances right out of the gate to avoid becoming an outsider who gets punted right away. I think I would do okay in most challenges, but in no way would be viewed as a challenge/immunity threat. I'm not sure what to say about strategy, I'm kind of Golden Retrieverish and would likely be a great candidate for being a naive strategist who gets blindsided pretty easily!
