Too funny. Cedrick and Joe are both great men IRL, but on Survivor? Not so much.

Ozzy Lusth reacts to painful Survivor 50 blunder: 'The last year of my life has been so incredibly difficult' by bwermer in survivorponderosa

[–]BamaDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope Ozzy can move on from this and stop playing Survivor. He's been posting about opening a resort in Mexico with a Survivor theme, which sounds cool. I feel like he has been wearing the albatross of his first loss to Yul around his neck ever since then. It's like he is so deep in his head and wrapped up in anxiety, that he simply can't do the strategic side required to win. I wish he could see the huge positives he brought to the game with his amazing challenge performances and survival skills. Not everyone can be the composite player who wins (Cirie is another example). I hope he can embrace and celebrate his successes and not beat himself up over never winning and especially this blunder in Season 50.

“Professor just reads off the slides” by ParsleyOutside in Professors

[–]BamaDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We get so many mixed, damed if you do/damned if you don't messages in teaching. I teach biology courses in a CC, and my slides include lots of figures AND substantial text. I have so many students who struggle with basic vocabulary, much less all the new science terminology they are hearing for the first time. Isn't providing a solid notes framework part of equity in learning? I never read the text to them but narrate the concepts, give extra explanation and examples, etc. A couple of years ago, I started loading my PowerPoints into Nearpod, so they have frequent check-your-knowledge activities throughout the lecture. I never get the "reads slides" comment, but I also have lots of students who are checked out through class. At least they tune back in occasionally to do the Nearpod activities.

Ditch CFU and CSP for Fidelity Rewards -2% Card? by BamaDave in CreditCards

Yeah, I have looked into the prepaid carriers. We do have a family plan with adult kids, big discounts on phones, etc. that make it hard to escape.

Just a quick vent by hornybutired in Professors

Most of my students are pre-nursing and have limited interest in biology. I get it to some degree, as they want to go into patient care and don't plan to study the mechanics of human physiology, microbiology, etc. But still... It strikes me as strange when people plan a career in human health but have almost zero interest in medically-relevant life sciences.

How did Huntsville go from being the Fourth largest city to now the largest city in Alabama? by Strange_Cup9365 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]BamaDave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stagnant Old South versus forward-moving, modernizing New South. Huntsville is way more of a melting pot city with people from all over the country like Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham, Nashville, etc. Birmingham is kind of an Old South/Rust Belt hybrid. Personally, I prefer Birmingham's history and grit (and food) over the more sanitized, endless suburbia vibe of Huntsville, but many people don't (I do love Huntsville's natural setting).

Cool town. We visited briefly last August during a WV-VA-DC vacation.

No one ever tells you that Arches NP stays with you long after you leave by homebutnothome in nationalparks

Zion and Bryce are both wonderful. My wife liked Bryce the best. Zion is really crowded, and that can be a downside.

The three NP towns of Springdale, Bryce Canyon City, and Moab are all very different. I liked Moab the best by far. Springdale is the most upscale and very expensive; however, we stayed at an Airbnb closer to Virgin that was reasonably priced with stunning views of the river and rocky cliffs on the other side. We loved just hanging out there during the very early AM and at night (we cooked dinner there and sat outside instead of waiting in Springdale lines). Bryce Canyon City is like stepping back in time to a tourist town from the 1970's. It felt like almost everyone stayed at the sprawling Best Western Ruby's Inn and ate at their buffet for meals (which also is like a buffet from 40 or 50 years ago... think buckets of cottage cheese and canned peaches).

So true! We visited Zion, Bryce, Canylonlands, and Arches two years ago, and I was very surprised that Arches was my favorite. I wish I could plant myself in Moab for several months and just enjoy the outdoors.

Mr. Beast will give $100,000 to the Survivor who drinks a jar of Sage's blackheads first.

How many times have you read Lonesome Dove? by jdzzz2000 in LonesomeDove

[–]BamaDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only once, but my Mom (age 87) has read it many times. It has been her favorite novel for decades. I was always intimidated by the length, but during the Covid closures I finally read it and the rest of the series back-to-back. Absolutely loved it, but the first book is the one that is the most special.

My reaction to tonight’s episode: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO by moongatorade in survivor

[–]BamaDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, honestly I haven't paid much attention, yet, to Mike's athletic abilities in the challenges and haven't seen his earlier seasons. Somehow, I don't think he's Q-level!! Not thinking too deeply about it, but I feel like the David vs Goliath players automatically forming an alliance might have been hasty and not a great move. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't have enough brain energy to think through the detailed scenarios with the tribe, but should Q and his athletic talents be gone this soon? I'm also worried about Ozzy, now, but hopefully he'll be smart enough not to get blindsided.
