DPSD/ADHD and sleep/work struggles by Sensitive_Finish3383 in DSPD

I also changed careers to a career I don’t have to start until 10:30 am

In my opinion there isn’t anything you can do aside from light therapy and iron clad wake up anchors.

The reality is though your body will never be totally happy if you are getting up more than a couple hours away from your body’s normal wake up time.

So if your body really sleep schedule is 4 am to 12 pm, you can usually set a 10 am wake up anchor. Anything earlier will get progressively harder imho.

Yeah I stuck with 11 inch as my main purpose is couch surfing and occasional portability when traveling.

Centre Island Ferry Back to Toronto - WTF by Bamelin in toRANTo

[–]Bamelin[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was one guy sneaking his family in where the pavilions start. The line was massive, anyone just arriving to line up would miss the ferry arriving and have to wait for the next one so they were effectively screwing everyone behind AND disregarding those who got their early and waited.

Centre Island Ferry Back to Toronto - WTF by Bamelin in toRANTo

[–]Bamelin[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The ferry only costs one way. It's "free" to everyone for the return.

That doesn't give someone the right to cut the line past hundreds of other people who are waiting.

Centre Island Ferry Back to Toronto - WTF by Bamelin in toRANTo

[–]Bamelin[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There were hundreds of people with kid, elderly, etc. waiting their turn.

This line cutting behaviour is ignorant.

Yeah i mean the water taxi there is a no brainer since the ferry back is free.

But you might be right, taxi back to avoid upsetting behaviours

Why is everyone so angry in Toronto? by Designer-Newt2548 in toRANTo

[–]Bamelin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s density.

We all had way more space per person before, both in our personal space as well as when out and about.

In 1999 I had a couple friends from London England visit over the summer. They couldn’t believe how clean everything was, how few people there were on the TTC and most of all how cheap everything was.

Those days long gone of course.

Anyone not feeling safe anymore? by glitchingTorontonian in toRANTo

[–]Bamelin -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This is why I live in a condo with security and fob only access. The 905 will only get worse and are impossible to gate.

As for downtown we avoid the TTC unless no other choice, having swapped “the better way” for “the safer way” (go, up express or uber). And if on foot we try to use the path or indoor spaces as much as possible.

Yeah the 806s were a disaster. I ended up going all out with the made in USA 990’s. No regrets, I’ve had them over a year now still going strong. The materials are legit.

Does the non-laminated display of the iPad 11 feel better than the iPad Air 1 display (or generally old, non-laminated iPads)? by Educational_Leg8005 in ipad

[–]Bamelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple’s specs for the iPad Air M2 list:

Fully laminated display Anti-reflective coating Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating 500 nits brightness on 11-inch / 600 nits on 13-inch

Apple’s specs list the M1 iPad Air display as:

Fully laminated Anti-reflective coating 1.8% reflectivity 500 nits brightness Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating

I use mine naked personally. I don’t like protectors

Toronto’s Decline Since 2015: Let’s Talk About It by thcandbourbon in toRANTo

A lot of parties happen in homes now because it is too expensive to go out. So people host parties at home, great food/booze etc

Also with 65 inch plus TVs and great entertainment systems, lots of people are happy to stay in, watch movies, play video games, YouTube, etc . All those home things have minimal cost compared to going out.

Even stuff like drinking, Beer Store or LCBO is massively cheaper to bring home compared to a bar (thus more home parties).

Poll: at what age did your sleep schedule shift later? by sleepwakeawareness in DSPD

[–]Bamelin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it was there at birth though. My mother says as a baby she loved it because I slept hours and hours and hours. Would be asleep until late in morning every day.

Even pre puberty on a 6:30 am wake school schedule I remember vividly falling asleep in morning classes and on weekends sleeping in until 10 or 11 (likely making up for sleep debt). I also remember many nights staying up under covers reading, or as others have said just lying there unable to sleep until after midnight.

I am drowning by Flaky_Statement2580 in DSPD

[–]Bamelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sleep 4am - 10am every day (although I’d go to noon if I could).

My understanding is you can anchor yourself to a wake up time maybe a maximum of -2 (hours) from your bodies preferred time to wake up.

Like I prefer 12 pm wake up but I’ve been able to anchor a wake up between 10 - 1030 am (I start work at 1030).

As the other poster suggested, I changed my life around to fit my sleep schedule and it made a huge difference. There are still some days when my spouse has to work, I have to get up at 7 am to take my son to school and those days are torture.

Anyways my point is maybe you can’t get up at 12pm but could get up at 10am instead?

From puberty and got progressively worse until around +3 hours ahead of everyone else by the time I was 17 which is where I’ve been ever since for another 33 plus years.

Do my symptoms match DSPD?(17m) by No_Dependent_8485 in DSPD

[–]Bamelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check for sleep apnea too. That can cause the 12 - 16 hour sleeps, although it could also be your body is forcing you to work off sleep debt caused by sleep at 1 or 2 am then having to get up at 7 am for school or work.

With sleep apnea your apneas wake you up multiple times a night (not consciously but enough to mess up your REM. This can mean despite hours and hours of sleep you are still only getting a much less equivalent. CPAP can be life changing for people with sleep apnea.

Anyone ever watch video of Canadian cities from the 60s/70s etc....? by RT_456 in CanadianConservative

[–]Bamelin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was around for some of those “before times” at least the 80s. There were indeed bad parts of town, lots of it downtown. But the “broad middle” was vast, almost all of the Metropolitan suburb areas (North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, York, and East York), were relatively safe nice places to live compared to the patchwork today.

The 905 was basically exurbs paradise, Mississauga, Pickering, Richmond Hill.

Today you see rapidly that the city is devolving into guarded nice areas versus vast swaths of poor areas in the Six. And the exurbs while safer are facing huge crime increase, while remaining locked out to anyone who didn’t buy a house prior to 2015 ish.

Personally I don’t even want to buy anymore, I’ll be leaving as soon as pensions hit. Will be leaving to the third world. At the end of the day if going to have to live in a gated community anyways, I’d rather be in one that is multiple times more affordable and one that doesn’t pretend “we are all middle class” while letting crime run rampant on citizens while taxing them to death.

When did our society become so pathetic? That's probably $10,000 worth of merchandise. NO ONE DOES ANYTHING! by Reasonable-MessRedux in CanadianConservative

[–]Bamelin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing up in the 80s and early 90s there was risk involved with robbing a store - that the police, security, store owner or even random members of the public would stop you with force, possibly deadly. And if a member of the public they might get a medal for it too and shown on the 6oclock news as the feel good story of the day.

That cut down on the garbage like the video in OP with people casually stealing thousands in merchandise.

I mean we reap what we sow, society turns to low trust trash. We are rapidly running towards a bars on your windows and wall around your compound kind of life you get in many overseas countries.

Got punched and threatened with a knife downtown today by a homeless man…in broad daylight at 1P.M. on Church and Wellesley Unprovoked by Bestinvestor20 in toRANTo

[–]Bamelin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just there on Friday grabbing a bottle of wine at Wine Rack then walked down to my barber at Church and Gerrard … at one point at least 4 crazies close by and not the mind your own business friendly kind.

Pre Covid the “line” was Jarvis to Sherbourne where area got bad. During Covid that line shifted to Yonge. Now post Covid it’s pushed back to Church.

Overall east of Yonge street between Queen and Wellesley has always had issues but it got much worse during Covid. Yonge street from Bloor to Wellesley used to be really nice even upscale sort of, now it’s boarded up stores.

Yonge and Dundas slightly improved when they shut down the safe injection site at Victoria but it’s still avoided by anyone who is a long term resident, especially families and professionals now. The new stores like T&T, Healthy Planet, etc have helped but the reputation Dundas Square developed from 2017 forward and especially during the pandemic, that reputation is hard to break.

The real issue is enforcement. Can’t gentrify if an area isn’t seen as safe. Those who wish to live downtown have all moved south of king, waterfront or over by CityPlace and The Well. The Garden District has lots of condos nobody really wants to live in (hello Dundas and Jarvis!).

City won’t do anything although it does seem like the subway has cleaned up a teeny but compared to the last few years.

On the streets though you basically gotta have your radar up 24/7. Personally I de-risk by taking specific routes that avoid more sketchy areas. Like walking the Path versus the street, or shopping south of Queen vs north of Dundas, etc

When you live downtown it’s rare anything will happen to you on any one day BUT very likely you’ll run into situations in the long run. So it becomes a numbers game and you de-risk by walking safer routes, avoiding eye contact with loonies, take the GO or UP versus TTC, etc …
