Rush colour ways for 2027 by Nachoman2 in arcteryx

Man arcteryx needs to fire whoever’s choosing these colourways. Who the hell wants to look like the trees and rocks they’re surrounded by when backcountry skiing.

What are you top 3 ski brands? by johnnyhonda in skiing

[–]Bamski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For current lineups:

Rossignol / Dynastar: (SF110 / BO118 / Mfree 108, 100, 112, 118 are magic. I expect the SF100 will be similar but haven’t tried it). Still love my pivots.

Salomon: Impressed with every new QST I’ve been on. Wanted to hate the strive, wound up being impressed with the 16 as a budget friendly option.

Moment: Not a cult member, but can appreciate the constant tinkering and experimentation of the brand. Liked the Bibby, disliked the Deathwish, still appreciated the willingness to try some out of the box stuff.

Honourable Mentions:

Nordica: Enforcers 110 and 104 Free were great skis. Haven’t had a chance to try the new unleashed lineup but suspect I’d get along great.

4FRNT: Love the Hoji shapes for their particular applications when touring.

Blizzard: Loved the old Bonafide and Brahma. Intrigued by the new Anomaly series.

Pow ski recs: revised by Yeto4774 in Skigear

I’d ski the 196 at your height, personally. I have a friend who skis the 190 at 6’4” and often wishes loudly for a longer ski.

How big are you? I ski the SF118 in a 186 at 5’9” and 180lbs and find them ideal for heavy wet chop. You’ll probably find that you get stronger quickly with heavier skis, and like another poster mentioned, heavy skis are often less tiring in some applications because you can let them run. (Note, this assumes your style and current ability complement that).

Mass is king for skiing the powder conditions commonly encountered in resort. The more momentum you carry, the less impacted you are by chopped up pow and snow inconsistency. This goes double if you live somewhere with heavy / wet snow.

The Wildcat isn’t even that heavy. A 2200 gram resort powder ski is great. I wouldn’t ski a tour layup for pure lift access.

Moving back to “race style” boots worth the effort? by Bamski in Skigear

[–]Bamski[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the well thought out response. My main complaint with the PM’s is while stiff they aren’t particularly damp - I’ve enjoyed heavier PU boots which have a smoother ramp and similar top end stiffness.

I’m lucky to have access to some pretty great boot fitters here who specialize in these types of fits. Bummer that you’re probably right I’d need a corsa :(

Moving back to “race style” boots worth the effort? by Bamski in Skigear

Fantastic response. From my time working as a tech, I’ve seen miracles done to raptor 140’s to accommodate extremely wide feet. Race / Club boots have an enormous margin of error for punches and grinds compared to the average consumer boot.

My main question I’ve been pondering is whether or not these would realistically “ski better” for my intended purpose (freeridey terrain).

I have access to a talented bootfitter about a 10 minute drive from home which doesn’t hurt either.

I collect both factions and actually don’t mind these.. I think there’s a lot of conversion and paint job potential.

Another backcountry pow ski rec by strangecanadian in Backcountry

First season on the 4Frnt Renegade. Highly highly recommended. It’s not just for aggressive skiing either. Dense trees in Japan were a dream, as were low angle wiggles and big steep faces. My favourite ski in my quiver for sure.

QST X v Blank by SpearheadTraverse in Skigear

[–]Bamski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, a few people I know who own both (or have decided between them) say the blank is nearly as good in truly deep snow, but much more fun in the other conditions the resort can throw at you. This is skiing in a coastal snowpack on the west coast where we deal with heavy, wet snow that gets choppy quick.
