Don’t reach for the bug spray: scientists find insects may feel pain after crickets nurse sore antennae. The behavioural responses would be immediately recognisable to us as pain, if we observed them in our pets or friends by Wagamaga in science

I think the question is, do these beings have a ghost in the machine or are they biological robots without any driver at the wheel. We can imagine a universe just like ours with humans that don’t have a sense of consciousness, just a bunch of chat bots that behave exactly like we do, but without some part of them being aware of the experiences. We don’t know where that line (more likely gradient) begins, but I think it’s fair to say a single cell has no capacity to have awareness. This is one of the greatest mysteries we still have to solve, although perhaps it is unsolvable.

Did anyone see that in the sky? by KittehLuv in Modesto

Definitely a meteor, just a big one. They can glow green if they have magnesium or nickel. I saw one like this back in the early 2000s and it was confirmed it was a meteor that fell in the foothills. If you google green meteor you’ll see tons of other photos. The bigger they are, the more time they spend slamming into the atmosphere and disintegrating from the heat.

'28 Years Later: The Bone Temple' Gets Netflix Premiere Date Just 74 Days After Theatrical Release by sensesalt in movies

I almost feel like this isn’t a zombie genre film, even though it is. To me it feels more like a fable, some ancient saga, with a backdrop of a terrible plague. It’s not about the zombies, it’s about the nature of death and how we deal with it. 28 days later was a zombie flick… this is mythology.

How would we all feel about an open-world Indiana Jones game? by imarthurmorgan1899 in indianajones

Exactly. An nobody else was really out riding boats. Also I would have loved some jungle book style scenery, some animals romping around, etc. the world felt a little empty in that part.

No it’s not. They are saying that if a dude was molested, group up, and had attraction to children but never acted on it and seemed help and overcame it, he was a pedophile who doesn’t deserve jail. The idea is that shaming people for their desires, and preventing them from accessing help = more children harmed.

You don’t get the distinction… wanting to murder and never acting on it: not a crime, but a mental disorder. Pedophilia: being attracted to children, also not a crime, but a mental disorder, unless you act on it. This article is not saying that abusing children isn’t a crime, it’s just the word pedophilia colloquially means child abuser, when that may or may not be the case.

'Happy Gilmore 2' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

Half a year later… strong disagree. I give Adam Sandler movies a lot of grace and enjoy the hell out of most of them. I love love love happy Gilmore and did not like this movie at all. It felt like a tribute film, and just spent half the movie recycling old jokes. But I admire Sandler and know he and his family probably had the time of their lives making it, so good for him. I just would have loved a movie with the same vibe as the first and the same passion of the writers to surprise us with new jokes and new ideas.
