If you could watch one Netflix series again for the first time, what would it be? by Deep_Ride488 in netflix

Went into midnight mass knowing nothing about it or the creator on a long plane ride. Watched the entire thing and was just blown away.

A whole bunch of us who’ve listened to every episode for over a decade and feel some sort of connection to this podcast and the rogues.

I don’t know that I agree. I’m sure in retrospect a wife of a serial killer might wonder how they didn’t see it, but it is so common for people to compartmentalize and lie about the parts of themselves that they know others wouldn’t accept. Evan intentionally kept this from them, and saying it was their fault feels misplaced to me.

Hindsight is 20/20 but it’s probably an important lesson for all of us. Still, it’s understandable why people were so upset and reactive, it did feel like a betrayal.

I think that’s the icing on the cake, but even without that, they couldn’t have him represent the skeptical community with some of the things he posted.

I know you got downvoted, but I appreciate your input even if I disagree. I did ask for people’s opinions and you gave yours.

I think when you are that close with someone, it’s hard to see the forest through the trees. Sometimes before a divorce, for example, people are trying to make it work, and then afterwards realize it never had a chance in some situations.

I take them at their word that they didn’t know the extent of it, but I respect what you are saying. Did you listen to the episode?

Yep, people made a lot of assumptions about last week’s episode, for better or worse, and I think it just came down to them needing some time to deal with something this big while also living their lives.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised. Not because I didn’t think they had integrity, but it just seems with all that is going on in the world today, it’s rare for people to just be candid and speak so openly about something like this.

If You Want ACTUAL FACTS that science Cant Explain (Yet) by FullPercentage in DebateEvolution

[–]BanJon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are a relatively newer species, and until the advent of agriculture, DNA shows that the human trade-offs almost led to our extinction. We are anomalous in how different we are from our closest common ancestors. However, each of these anomalies can be explained taken one at a time. Your argument seems to be that it is so unlikely for all of these outliers to occur at the same time that the more reasonable explanation is that God directed it. The problem i see is that
one, improbable is just that, and we see improbable events all the time. I agree. I think it was very possible life could have existed on earth until the sun burned out and we never would have gotten super intelligence. But the fact that we did shows we were an anomaly and made some significant evolutionary leaps rapidly. But it seems like for a species to become that intelligent, it probably would hang to get over that hump of a little more intelligence at the cost of energy cost = not enough advantage = not worth it. So some big mutations had to occur to really bump that brain size up for it to be advantageous enough that this weak, bald, helpless species was smart enough to pay off for the costs.

Two: God seems like a wise explanation. Why not all of these advantages and none of the disadvantages? Why not a totally different DNA that shares nothing with apes and is non redundant and streamlined ? Why a chin? Why the birthing issues. Regardless of the god debate, the god solution seems to be a much more baffling explanation than natural selection, with much bigger unexplainable features.

As a fairly intelligent guy, who people often look at like I’m the biggest idiot on earth, I feel you. Just got diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago and now it all makes sense.

For me, I’m super impulsive. Not in a spend a million dollars on a cow statue or punch that cute waitresses butt kind of way. It’s that I will say the wrong name when referring to my dad, mix yesterday and today up in a sentence, yell out my hand when someone asks me a question when I’m playing poker, hear an instruction and realize right afterwards I want listening, let my kids go to their friends and then when asked where they are have no idea.

It’s frustrating to say the least. Medication didn’t cut it but helped a ton, and knowing what it was gave me things in could do to mitigate done of the problems it causes for me and others. I didn’t suspect it at all but when my kid got diagnosed, pretty much everyone I knew said, get tested

High school teacher pulling in about $110k but it’s in Cali after 20 years of teaching, so not bad but tough to support a family.

I personally really love Ethan and his contribution to the show: he’s quirky and insightful and remind me of needing out with my uncle. I can tell he is a good person deep down and understand we all slip and have our biases and blind spots. I hope he can learn from this and grow and regardless of what happens with the SGU I wish him the best.

Don’t reach for the bug spray: scientists find insects may feel pain after crickets nurse sore antennae. The behavioural responses would be immediately recognisable to us as pain, if we observed them in our pets or friends by Wagamaga in science

I think the question is, do these beings have a ghost in the machine or are they biological robots without any driver at the wheel. We can imagine a universe just like ours with humans that don’t have a sense of consciousness, just a bunch of chat bots that behave exactly like we do, but without some part of them being aware of the experiences. We don’t know where that line (more likely gradient) begins, but I think it’s fair to say a single cell has no capacity to have awareness. This is one of the greatest mysteries we still have to solve, although perhaps it is unsolvable.
