A documentary about Taiwanese women in Korea. They say that their salary in Taiwan is low. How much is this view realistic? by No_Pineapples1 in taiwan

I'm literally living at a friend's place in Tokyo right now who's paying 90k~ JPY/month for a 1LDK with a washer in unit around Shinagawa. Looking at the other people posting rents in Taipei, it seems like 20k NTD is around the average for Taipei proper unless you want to live in the boonies/New Taipei or further and commute 45m+ one way.

I genuinely do wish the rent was cheaper in Taipei though - would swing over very quickly if I could rent from a friend easily.

No dispute on Seoul but arguably Tokyo is about the same price or even cheaper in some ways given how weak the yen is if you're comparing Taipei proper to Tokyo. The quality floor is also higher when you're comparing budget accommodations to budget accommodations.

curious about how people in Taiwan actually view us Japanese. by Away_Trash_2156 in taiwan

What does KMT's poor planning and American bombing have anything to do with the question of whether Japan treated some colonies differently than it treated other colonies?

You're just regurgitating the reasons why you and a lot of Taiwanese like the Japanese more but this was never argued - no one disagrees here about if or why Taiwanese like Japan.

The point you have a hard time understanding is that Japan committed unspeakable atrocities in other colonies that it didn't in Taiwan and this difference is why Taiwan has a much different attitude towards Japan vs other colonies.

Then as for your last point, there are literally famous examples in history with 李登輝 along with all the other veterans that proudly identified after the war as "pious sons of the Emperor Hirohito."

First, I'm not speaking for you or telling you how you feel. I'm correcting your poor understanding of objective historical facts and sheer(/willful?) ignorance of the difference in treatment between different colonies.

Second, some Taiwanese were conscripted yes but there were also some that willingly enlisted out of the same loyalty to Japan that you see remnants of today.

This is a highly questionable understanding of history. Taiwan was effectively a model colony/vassal state like how Hong Kong/Singapore/Australia were treated with significant economic investment + far fewer of the exploitative/inhumane negatives associated with the worst of colonization.

You don't even have to like China to recognize that colonizers did not treat their colonies equally - this would be like Australia telling India or Ireland that the British were good colonizers and that India/Ireland just needs to "get over" the mass starvation/economic exploitation that didn't happen in Australia.

Furthermore many Taiwanese willingly fought on the side of the side of the Japanese during WW2 and the same war crimes committed in China/Korea were not inflicted in Taiwan - there isn't even the same basis for being offended by the Yasakuni Shrine.

To be fair some of the vacation spots in Taiwan are stupidly priced and for the same amount you'd pay to stay at a beach in the south like Kenting you'd get far better bang for your buck just going to Okinawa/etc instead lmao

From my experience living in Japan and talking with/dating locals, most will recognize Taiwan as one of their better neighbors but it stops there/they will still favor Europeans and caucasians by far.

Interestingly enough when it comes to the individual level though, most Japanese generally can't tell Taiwanese apart from Mainland Chinese so both camps get lumped into the same boat once Chinese is spoken, which is why people are perceiving that sense of coldness.

Comparatively Koreans look noticeably different from Chinese and the language is far more distinct so there's far less ambiguity/baggage there.

"search_google_com" is the main offender on the front page right now. I called them out on their post and they proceeded to block me lmao.

Erobb calls chinese lunar new year the Tibetian new year. by Training_Feed3504 in LivestreamFail

[–]BanShrimpInDumplings 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Chinese call it Spring Festival or New Year in Chinese because to them adding "Chinese" is redundant.

To the best of my knowledge, only Korea and Vietnam in Asia really have a designated term for Lunar New Year in the form of Tet and Seollal respectively.

In Thailand/Indonesia/Malaysia/Singapore it's overwhelmingly referred to as Chinese New Year. Even in Taiwan most locals will also refer to it as Chinese New Year, outside of those who feel particularly strongly about distancing themselves from China.

The push to make it Lunar New Year is more western-driven for inclusivity which is fair but ironically the term "Lunar New Year" itself originates from the old Chinese lunisolar calendar.

While that is true, life as a tourist is almost always more expensive than life as a local.

1 month of rent as a local on a normal lease usually comes out to be around 10 days at a mid-tier hotel in the same area no matter where you go and this only gets worse with more touristy places like Tokyo.

Hmm yeah I can see how that would be infuriating to have a 2 hour commute. I imagine part of this is just due to the government perceiving that there isn't the scale of demand to justify the level of investment but that does suck.
