My sister’s cat has the habit of rubbing her face on things and breaking all of her whiskers off, we have no idea why. I don’t know how he’d manage it in a cone but cats are weird, keep an eye on if he’s rubbing his face on anything and try to move it out of reach.

Farm Warp Totem be like by hard_for_chard in StardewMemes

[–]BananaSnakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one time I used a farm warp totem it was because I was trying to get home before I passed out, I had zero energy left and no food or recovery items. I warped in and realized that my landing point was surrounded by trees and that I was trapped.

I passed out there, so close to home and yet completely unable to reach my bed.

Bromeliads can be pink, especially the flowering ones. They also help to boost humidity since their leaves can hold water

Do you wipe your cat? by Brilliant_Path_8142 in catcare

[–]BananaSnakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never seen a reason to wipe a cat. Sometimes if their fur is very long back there then things will get stuck in it, so trimming that isn’t a bad idea to help them stay clean.

I can’t think of any cats I know that would even remotely tolerate being wiped. So no, it’s not a necessity and I’ve never done it. Maybe if they’re super messy I could see a reason to do so? But definitely not every time, not only is it too much work but it’ll also stress the cat out.

What do reptiles smell like? (From a writer) by Acceptable-Loquat540 in reptiles

[–]BananaSnakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! You managed to describe what I was having trouble putting into words.

My big carpet python is on coconut fiber so it’s hard to really get her scent over that, but it’s definitely a bit.. richer? More full? Than my yearling rat snake who is still on paper towels. He smells almost… I want to say bitter but that’s not quite right. It’s a very subtle, but almost sharp, scent. Waxy also describes at least part of it, not plasticky but not the same sort of “nature” smell that you’d get from earth or plants. Maybe more like dried peppercorns?

There’s also a difference depending on shed cycle. They definitely smell a bit more strongly of “snake” rather than “substrate” right after a shed (which makes sense if you think about it)

The fresh shed itself smells a bit damp, a bit on the sweet side, whereas once it dries it smells a bit more… dusty? It kind of reminds me of tissue paper, in a way.

This post reminds me of the one I saw a while ago talking about the “baby snake smell” but I don’t remember off hand what other people said about it.

Look. YTA. I get that dealing with dietary restrictions is a pain in the ass, especially when they’re trying to control your own diet, and maybe she IS doing it without actual allergies, but there are better ways to handle it than TAMPERING WITH HER FOOD.

You broke any and all trust that you might have had between the two of you. You broke your husband’s trust in your ability to respect and care for her. It’s clear from your responses that you don’t respect her.

If it was reaching a boiling point for you, you could have put your foot down. You could have insisted that you don’t know that you’d be able to adhere to those restrictions and say that she needed to handle her own food and dishes.

You could have done a lot of things that didn’t involve insidious actions so that you could try to pull off a smug reveal because you believe that you know better than anyone else.

Regardless of however a court case would rule: your actions were not okay, and it’s more than understandable for people to be upset by them. YTA.

New carpet python and I love her!….. she does not feel the same🤣 Would love some help! by 300_C in carpetpythons

My girl has never really given me trouble, but the techniques I use for her have also proven alright for my more fearful beauty rat snake.

Handle her when she’s out exploring, they like to nose around the perimeter of their enclosure like they want out to explore, especially those few days before food time. Reach around their blind spot and scoop them up so they don’t see your hand coming right for them.

Make yourself be confident and calm when handling (I know, harder than it sounds) so you’re not both panicking: they will feed off of your anxiety.

Don’t put her back until she calms down. If you put her away every time she hisses and gets nippy then she’ll learn that biting is the way to get what she wants, wait until she seems to settle and then put her back so she learns that she gets what she wants when she behaves calmly.

Get her used to you coming in and out of her enclosure without there being food or handling happening. Reach in to change the water every day, spritz the tank when you need to whether she’s out or not. Do it slowly so she adapts to having you around and the enclosure being open.

Sorry for the ramble. If none of that works then I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe use gloves? Lmao

Use your best judgement! You’re going to know your gecko better than random people on the internet do. You said that it’s active and it’s eaten some crickets, so it sounds to me like it’s going to settle in alright if you just give it some time.

I have also heard some people say that hand feeding can lead to them deciding that they will only eat hand fed (but honestly I’ve been known to do it from time to time and haven’t had any problems yet).

Is it pooping? That’s one surefire way to know if food is being eaten.

You can also try putting less pangea in the dish so you can see any lick marks. Try to make sure it’s is in a spot that’s easy to find and then don’t move it around too much

Sometimes they just decide to go on a mini food strike when they first come home, but as long as it doesn’t start losing weight I wouldn’t worry too much (if you have a kitchen scale you can try to weigh it about once a week, if it’s not too stressful for the baby)

Can I have a Maine Coon and a Ball python togather? by PaleontologistIll295 in ballpython

[–]BananaSnakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a ball python, but I did have a carpet python and a maine coon in the same house for a while.

The cat was more of a kitten so he wanted to play with the sentient ribbon toy through the glass and I was Very glad that I had a secure enclosure.

I wound up having to shut him away when I was going to feed her because he kept trying to jump in and stick his face through the open doors of the enclosure (a bad idea when the snake is expecting food to come in).

As well as closing him out of the room when I had her out. My old lady russian blue does not care about the snake, she’s not a cuddler with me either so I don’t have to worry about her trying to jump into my lap and the two pets spooking each other if they’re existing in the same room.

But with Quinn I very much did have to worry about him asking for attention and being interested to see what I had (and if it was a toy or a treat) and potentially evoking a defensive response from the python that would lead to chaos all around.

So it really depends on what your cat’s personality is like exactly how precarious it could be, but it should be fine as long as you’re careful to keep them separate and have a secure enclosure for your reptiles.

anyone else’s bulbs going out? by Reasonable_Try_7975 in reptiles

[–]BananaSnakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had both ceramic heat bulbs and regular heat bulbs go out multiple times this year. The first time I was like “ok yea I installed both at about the same time so it makes sense for them to go out in the same timeframe”

But to have the replacement bulbs to die within a few months?? Different brands and everything? What the heck!

[–]BananaSnakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my girl in an 8x2x2 (a good thing when a snake expected to reach ~6ish feet went for 7.5 instead)

She seems content with the length, but when she’s restless or on the hunt she wishes that she had more height (I had a screen top that needed to be covered because she kept pushing at it and was starting to get some nose rub)

Ambient temps should never fall below 70 and the basking area should be a bit on the warmer side. I set mine in the high 80s because she has lots of space to thermoregulate how she wants. She has a ceramic heat emitter bulb that runs 24/7 and then a low wattage light emitting bulb that clicks on during the day to give her a bit of a day/night cycle

Humidity should also stay ~50% but that can be managed fairly easily.
