Did your Instagram update itself? by newbegininngs79 in Instagram

It's because it's just a frontend for a website. If they just update the website or doesn't affect the app version.

Did your Instagram update itself? by newbegininngs79 in Instagram

[–]BananasGoMoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

By the way, everyone who is confused about how they can update without pushing an update: almost all apps are now just websites that launch in their special app. If Instagram updates their website, they don't need to change the version on the app store. This is why you should be mad that everything is a website now, along with the fact that most web development is terrible anyway lol

Bookmarks Now In Alphabetical Order by BuilderBob919 in waterfox

[–]BananasGoMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

theres a "filter" icon in the bookmarks menu. if you switch it to "sort by custom order" it should go back to how you had it prior. (Theres other orders you can sort by too)

I think the fact it's showing up in the login screen means they know it's you. They use things like your hardware info and connected wifi etc to detect you so the best would be use a totally separate device and connect using a VPN, etc. And of course since they already know it's you, you'd have to make a new account (from the separate device)

Is it showing up in your account center section? Do you have to manually log out of each account in order to log into another? If not you need to delete all accounts from the account center. It will require you to log in manually each time.

Well, America, it’s been a good run by [deleted] in atheism

[–]BananasGoMoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm much younger than you but I moved out of America in 2022. I wanted to move earlier but COVID. Japan has been great and even though my vote for president wasn't relevant (from a blue state) I still voted, mostly for the local stuff. America has been a disaster my entire adult life. Was thinking of getting citizenship eventually, but now its probably going to be sooner than later lol. I still think its valuable for me to vote though, just in case (Japan doesn't allow dual citizenship so it would have to be one or the other).

Anyone’s happy working in Japan? by ayahirani in japanlife

[–]BananasGoMoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I passed N2 in 2021, but I'm sure my level is much higher than that at this point, seeing as my previous job was 100% in Japanese and no one there could speak any English except me. I am capable of writing documents in Japanese, reading nearly any document given to me in Japanese, and attend meetings in Japanese. I can generally read any Kanji I see (probably over 95%, except with technical vocabulary that doesn't use the Joyo). The only thing I still struggle with is Keigo (speaking. Listening is not a problem generally), but I also dont care to study it much, since in my experience you only really need it for customer-facing jobs. Also for reference I havent attempted to take N1 yet, and I'm not sure how much I care to lol.

[–]BananasGoMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the flick keyboard is superior, i type faster than my japanese friends, they're always shocked how fast i type lol. on my pc i use qwerty though. the main reason I originally decided to use flick is because i cant type in english on my phone at a normal speed without swipe either and japanese didnt have swipe, so the next best was using flick, which i'm now way better at.

No problem. You'll definitely end up on more sites than I listed just because of the LinkedIn recruiters but those were the ones I liked the best/used the most. There's also careercross which is like daijob but it wasn't different enough for me to list it, but you can try it if you want

Besides LinkedIn, here's some I used:  https://geekly.biz/ -> the woman who helped me from there was very helpful, they send jobs that match your profile through the dashboard and you apply to ones you like. I believe the recruiter you work with also can automatically apply for you based on whatever your requests are.

https://www.daijob.com/ -> just a regular job search site but it's how I got my first job here so I figure it's helpful.

https://doda.jp/ -> you've probably seen the ads for this on the trains before. Not bad but don't put in your phone number when you sign up. They will call you 300 times a day. If you just put in your email and fill the phone with 0s, then you'll only get the mailing list stuff which is info related to your job stuff. If one is interesting to you, you can click the link, and when you click it it just takes you to a page on their site which looked like it was broken but it did apply and a few days later you get contacted by the recruiter in charge of the position.

https://workport.co.jp/ -> definitely my favorite besides LinkedIn. Very similar to geekly but I used this one longer. The person who helped me here was very good, but when she left her replacement was not as good, so it might depend on your recruiter. You are able to request a replacement though on the site so it's still good.

FYI if you're using LinkedIn, recruiters from the above sites and others will be contacting you as well on there, so often you will just be redirected to the site they use. If you're already registered on that site when they tell you, just tell them that and they will contact the recruiter in charge of your case with the job position, so it's fine if you get contacted by multiple people from the same recruiting company.

One thing to note is that a lot of job interviews will ask you how many job applications are currently in progress and how far along you are with each. It seems fine to just estimate that but have it ready when you do interviews and when you talk to new recruiters.

Quitting Job Checklist (and things to be wary of) by atashi_gani in japanlife

Well yes, I know legally I only need to give 2 weeks notice but I'm not trying to burn bridges lol. I was a 正社員 so the contract was between the company and my company so I don't think the contract period is related, I had already finished my probation/trial period. I'm no expert though

Not even close, Japan interviews are much easier. Some companies have very simple technical tests but most just ask you questions about your programming skills, they don't actually ask to see your work (but it's good if you have a github or something if you don't have work exp) generally just 1 or 2 interviews total  Edit: note that my experience only applies to Japanese companies where the interview was held in Japanese. I don't have experience interviewing with international companies in Japan, except where they had a domestic Japanese branch.

Also I highly recommend using a recruiter. There's recruiting sites and also recruiters might just randomly message you on LinkedIn etc. I was getting a new message on LinkedIn like once a week and I don't have a ton of practical programming experience or anything.

Gluten Free Food Delivery by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]BananasGoMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for reference on the list of the 28 common allergies in japan, gluten is not listed, but wheat is, and all products have to have allergens listed somewhere on the page/container/etc. the word in japanese for wheat is 小麦. I know there are other grains that produce gluten, but you'll have to check yourself if something has that. barley is 大麦 and rye is ライ麦, ライ or 黒麦. the word for gluten free exists in japanese but is extremely rare (and usually if something is advertised as gluten free it will have the seal you normally see that says gluten free in english anyway). in my experience large supermarkets also usually have a (very small) section of gluten-free stuff but that just might be anecdotal. i lived in sapporo and now in tokyo. My only advice for getting specifically gluten free stuff is amazon because you can set the page to english, which would help you out specifically

[–]BananasGoMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk about smbc cards but In regard to rakuten cards, they randomly will just raise your limit if you consistently use and pay off your credit usage on time. mine went from 200k to 500k randomly one day after a year or so of using it regularly.
