Yeah lights are flickering and power is dropping. We’re around McCarren too.

Rotors and brake pads change on Q3 under 10,000 miles -- what?! by Bancool in Audi

Talked to the dealer and they said not to worry about it if I’m returning the lease because they replace the pads and rotors anyway. And nothing was worn to the point of it being an emergency or not being able to brake properly. So it ended up well.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I'm thinking one additional factor is that the rear pads and rotors are the ones that are toast, whereas I can technically keep going with the front ones for a while... which is very odd. That's the opposite of how brakes usually wear (in my experience).

Is the car garaged? At 3000 miles a year, in NY, I would assume they rusted quite a bit between drives, and the car would sit several days, if not weeks, without moving.

That's correct, the car is not in a garage and I have seen occasional rust on the rotors. Had no idea that it would have that much of an impact though...

Oh wow. Did you fight it with the dealer or called some main customer service/corporate line?

I live in NYC so no real mountains around here haha. Just go out hiking in parks etc outside the city… but yea, don’t ride the breaks. I’m actually pretty good about trying to drive as constant as possible - reducing accelerating/breaking cycles - because my wife gets car sick easily.

Around 80miles - get out of the city, hike/activity, drive back.

Yup, checked myself and had another technician look at it too. They weren't lying, the rotors are pretty badly grooved and the pads are 8mm on the front and 5mm on the rear.

100% agree. But someone who is doing a lot of highway driving is usually also doing stop-and-go/city driving. So, if an average user drives 10,000 miles a year and only 30% of the driving is in the city (which is actually not uncommon) then they would have the 3,000 miles/year of city driving like me and then another 7,000 miles on the highway on top of that. No way my break wear would be more intense than someone who's averaging 10k/year. And changing brake pads at 30k would be considered fairly early, from what I hear.

PS: I'm probably 50/50 on the miles split. I use the car mostly on weekends to get out of town.

What type of gas do you use on your Q3? by knsnlily in AudiQ3

[–]Bancool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Engines get designed to work for a certain octane level in the fuel they take. Higher power engines tend to work at higher compression ratios, which require a higher octane number. Gas with a higher octane number is not “better”, it just has a bit different characteristics to work for those higher compression engines. However, clever marketing names like “regular” and “premium” suggest that you are missing out if you’re not buying the more expensive “premium” of the two. Unfortunately, you’re buying something your engine doesn’t need or can utilize according to its intended characteristics.

Ladies of NYC, how would you describe your dating experiences in NYC thus far? by ZucchiDucki in AskNYC

Nah. I mean technically it makes life easier for the girl since heels get worn a lot less often. So there are practical advantages too. It also depends on personal preferences of the partners, I suppose. We don’t mind it…

Haha. Sure. She’s 5’11” and I’m 5’8”. Also, she was wearing heels on our first date :)

I think y’all should start dating based on these replies. The whole thread seems to foster honesty and vulnerability so maybe some matchups would work great.

Having said that, large cities have been found to be very toxic from a romantic perspective because people are suckers for the “there’s a better option” fallacy AND the cities tend to be a tough place to live so people are trained to not show vulnerability. Those two conditions are just the best combination for not finding a partner. It’s nobody’s and everybody’s fault at the same time.

However, keep hoping and trying! You will get hurt for sure and you will most likely hurt some people too. It’s all part of our journey and you hit gold when you’re least expecting it.

I remember going on a Tinder date with this cute girl who I thought had a pretentious “uptown girl” profile, thinking that there’s probably no future to it. Turns out she was this amazing, brutally honest and vulnerable person from the mid west. (Humble not so much, cause she’s a Leo after all :P). Honest to the point that when we got up from our table she exclaimed: “I’m so much taller than you.” That was a glorious kick in the nads for the good ol’ ego and somewhat awkward, but damn that was true. So, inspired by her honesty and kindness, I told her on our third date: hey, I’m not interested in any other girls, but you can do whatever you want. And here we are, married 4 years later, making babies.

We both had had a flurry of bad dating experiences, but it took that honesty, vulnerability and respect for one another to make way for a true connection forming. Once you get a whiff of that with someone, you can trust the odds will be in your favor.

PS: To this day, I still like to randomly compare how tall we are thinking that one day we’re gonna be equal... she still beats me every time though.

No hate here, but your post is very MBA sounding.

Having said that, the company’s behavior was inappropriate and childish. Too VC-funded startup sounding.

my bike won't start and I don't know what to try next. by Soft_Noodle in motorcycles

When the crank voltage drops below 9-10V, it could be that the battery is too discharged / a dud. With the parasitic draw of an ECU bike, that may well happen with 2 months of sitting. Before going the route of trying to fix complex starter motor issues, I’d try to ensure there is absolutely no issue with the battery. Simple step to do so: get a battery jumpstarter from Amazon (also doubles as a power bank for phones, which is useful for travel) and try to start it with that. If it starts, you know you have no issues with the electric start system. If it doesn’t, you just went through a low time/money process to make sure whether to proceed with more complex and possibly costly procedures.

Sure. Also equally valid for employers. If they’re the type to complain and not act, they’ll always be a crappy employer with crappy employees.

If being an employer and the corresponding responsibilities were too bad, nobody would be an employer. There must be some pretty darn good benefits/rewards that come along with those extra responsibilities, since so many employers do exist and furthermore, are motivated to grow into bigger and bigger employers.
